Richmond Sessions ’22-’23 featuring Tommy Emmanuel

  • Australian guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel played in his family band from the age of six, touring his home country in the early 1960s. He gradually developed a formidable technique in many musical styles, including jazz, rock, and especially, country, where his deft playing is particularly at home. Following his origins, he played electric guitar with several rock bands in stadiums all over Europe. Yearning for something purer and closer to his heart, he has found his greatest success as a solo acoustic guitar artist. Emmanuel's albums have gone gold and platinum, and he is widely revered as a master finger-picker, even collaborating with his hero Chet Atkins on a popular '97 release.

I saw Tommy perform here in St. Louis, MO back in October of 2023. It was a surprise birthday gift that included a meet & greet with 'the master.' THE BEST CONCERT I've ever attended... and I've been to many. As a musician, meeting Tommy Emmanuel in person was a thrill beyond words... just like his performance that evening. It was life-changing and inspirational. Can't wait to see him perform again. 😎🎸👍

I first heard Tommy play live in the late 1990s at a small club in Sydney called the Basement. I was never the same after that. Have attended a dozen shows since then and have been gobsmacked each and every time. One of the greatest guitarists of all time.

One minute I am so inspired listening to this amazing person and musician and the other minute I feel like giving up and throwing my guitar out the window. This is what you can be after 50,0000 hours of playing enjoying every minute of it.

Thank you so much for having Tommy on this podcast. I absolutely loved it. I can also see that you guys (like me) were moved by his beautiful music, his skills fine tuned over a lifetime, his generosity of spirit and his honesty and humility. What a gift he is to the world of music!

I was seriously fortunate enough to not only experience a whole week of Tommy and Phil playing the Kirra Hotel in 1985, I sat at their table during the gigs (my friends were supporting the act). Tommy and Phil are (were) incredible musos, and people to be around. Two of the funniest guys you will ever meet. Those were the days...

Having grown up with the boys, mostly during the heady Sydney years, knowing Phil and all that accompanied those challenging times, I still recall one night at the Trade Union Club. I had been driving the Truck for the Zarsoff Brothers and Kevin Borich, around the same time. That time with Tommy and Phil at the Tree radey, and the band is etched in my brain for life. Now Tommy is not only Australia's greatest guitar talent, more likely the greatest acoustic guitarists in the world. Miss you guys. Blessing for Scarlett 🙏

Tommy, your description of 'how to play' Lady Madonna, working and working at the skill to eventually release your mind from that and let it just do the damn thing, is a beautiful manifesto on the process of doing virtually anything. It's how you learn another language, how you learn how to cook, really it's how you learn to live life. Humble yourself to the 'process', and sooner than you think you'll have that process nailed down and you will never have to worry about it again. And then you can play.
Thank you, Sir. What a wonderful lesson.

Pay attention to Tommy's right hand. That's just FLESH on the strings- no nails- and a thumbpick (!) Stunning articulation. And his sound live and unplugged is far different than when he's running live through his AER which brightens his tone and gives it more snap. Unplugged or amped up- just gorgeous tone with merely fingertip callouses. Wow- just WOW . . .

I am so proud to have seen him in my home town in the UK many years ago. He has been a musical hero of mine for many years. I eventually emigrated to Australia where he and his late brother Phil played together. I consider Tommy a musical genius and I do not use superlatives comfortably. however, I can with Tommy. Ty Tommy for everything you have given to music.

Wow... Thanks for sharing this. I will be seeing him play in Rome in a few weeks for the second time. For 20+ years I dedicated myself to electric guitar playing, idolising players like Slash and Nuno but you move on in life and the acoustic is so much more satisfying.. so I am dedicating myself now to this and Tommy is my #1 by a country mile. A great musician and a great guy.

The interviewer's reaction at 42:44 says everything about the unbridled genius that fills Tommy. Tommy is the very embodiment of the generosity of music, but as much credit goes to the interviewer for listening and insightfully prompting Tommy to expound further resulting in this master class in composing and arranging for guitar. Easily the richest 1:22:45 with Tommy I've ever heard.

Its a joy to hear the master musician Tommy Emmanuel talk about his process when feeling the music, writing and coming to the right idea for a song, and honestly I haven't heard many (really very, very few) who will tell/share about all this difficult, really hard and personal stuff like Tommy does.
We, the ones who enjoy music, who like to enjoy and discover every single minor detail of every song, either we know music or not, want and need more geniuses like Tommy to tell thier stories, their way of doing things.
We are really lucky, we can hear and watch Andres Segovia, David Russell, Sabicas, Paco de Lucia, Yamandu Costa, Ana Vidovic, Wes Montgomery, John Mayer, Billy Strings, Billy Joel, The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tommy Emmanuel and many, many others great masters from our houses, at any time of the day.

I have one thing to say. Since the first time I heard Tommy, about ten years ago, I knew he was Anointed with the ability to Entertain like nobody else, Amen ! Some aspects I would shun not understanding these are the good spirit helpers. Maybe I won't forget but better need to remember, recall and ... I guess put it down on ... track. Thanks again for the inspiring comments about playing (I will call it writing too...) be good and I hope you T are able to read this in your busy good service to others.

It is so inspiring to hear him play and explain how important it is to focus on the musical nuances in order to make the guitar sing. I am completely amazed at how aware he is of this, especially in the context of the times we live in, where most guitarists have immense technical abilities but produce very little music. Many should embrace this philosophy, as I believe it will make the guitar a more popular instrument, not only among other guitarists but also among the general public. 🙂

Tommy is the definition of humble genius. It's interesting to note that this is one of the few Tommy interviewers that doesn't physically respond to Tommy's playing. I recently rewatched the Rick Beato interview with Tommy. Conversely, Rick is laughing, moving, responding.....like most of Tommy's fans. Not saying this guy doesn't appreciate Tommy's magic, but it really stood out for me. Nonetheless, props to him for having Tommy sit down and share his wizardry. Seeing Tommy next month in Northern VA. It's been about five years and I'm way overdue. Cheers!
