      You could use more material and adress the materials elasticity. I think he made two mistakes: 1. He put gear racks in a row, but since the abs is very elastic, the lowest gear got the highest load and broke. He could have solved it either by using more parallel racks (instead of in-line) or by pretensioning. (difficult with lego) 2. He used the least suited gears on the racks, since they 8 teeth gears' teeth are the weakest on the base and, through the low radius, the gear regularily has onle one contact point. Bigger gears have multiple conract points. I assume the best choice would have been to use multiple parallel racks with worm gears.

A vertical standing can that gets 60kg pressure evenly distributed on the top aluminum ring, while standing on a flat surface where the botompressure also gets distributed evenly, wouldn't break I bet. There is no real weakpoint from top to botom compared to squeezing the sides together or such...
      And in a press it should always be given that both sides are perfectly flat and thus distribute all their pressure as even as possible. Perfect scenario for a can to not break...
      as I said the walnut would probably break eventho a wallnutshell is way harder than brass... it's because it's round. all weight goes from the press over one tiny spot into the walnut. thats 60kg on a qubic millimeter. a can would have like a 20 times as big surfacearea on the folded aluminumring for withstanding weight

    The reason why your pressing force peaked and is slowly backing down is because of the mass/friction of all those gears and axles. All the friction and mass is straining your motors making the press harder to turn so your pressure is decaying. You'd have to go back to the more simple press designs to get any higher BUT like you found out the gears are too weak for heavy lifting/pressing so you need to find the happy medium, that's where you'll get the most amount of pressing pressure. My guess is around 90kg, you can get more pressure with a medium-level build design but the gears won't like it as much, you're awfully close! VERY COOL STUFF!!

  • @zelon88
    @zelon88 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed the video. From working in machine shops my whole life, I can tell you that no real (full-scale) presses use direct-drive electric linear actuators (which is basically what you've made to drive your ram). The most efficient way to drive a press via direct-drive electric motor is through a heavy flywheel attached to a camshaft via clutch. When you engage the press the clutch will engage flywheel to the camshaft for one (or a predetermined) number of strokes and then disengage. The rotational energy stored in the flywheel acts as an inertial capacitor, storing a large intermittent burst of potential energy that is recharged by a small but constant amount of kinetic energy. It's how mechanical punch presses have worked for over one hundred years.
    Hydraulic presses (or the linear-electric-drive press that you've created, which don't really exist in the industrial sector) are beneficial because your stroke can go up and down. To put it another way, the press operator has far more control over the stroke than a mechanical press. Also, hydraulic presses typically give you greater stroke for a given tonnage. They are also slower, which gives you a better product with less waste due to blow out. Complex or poorly made dies or especially long strokes can hold air pockets in the material which explosively release through the material if the stroke is too fast, destroying the product in the process. Having a hydraulic press means the operator can go as slow as they want, back off, and reapply pressure once air pockets have dissipated. Mechanical presses only go one way, and older ones typically can't disengage their clutch mid-stroke. So once you hit the buttons you're committed to the stroke and you better stay out of the way! In the USA, fortunately, those have been all-but outlawed by OSHA.
    So again, thanks for sharing! While this isn't a true hydraulic press I get where you were going with it. I think you should try making a mechanical "punch" press next. One with a heavy flywheel spun at high RPM by a small(ish) motor. Then use this energy to drive a camshaft attached to your ram. This will give you greater power and a faster stroke, but also a shorter stroke with less granular control. It seems contrary to common sense to try to *crush something with horsepower instead of torque, but believe it or not that's the most efficient way to do it. It allows you to amplify the size of your motor and *crush things you wouldn't ever be able to with the same motor by itself.

      Hey, thanks a lot. The punch press idea is great. It actually may be the best way to generate high crushing power with Lego. Have to figure out the clutch mechanism and how to add enough weight to the flywheel, but otherwise it looks promising.

    You could try to lube it with graphite (oil or powder) for more force, works well for me in nearly every Lego technic pack, especially on chains and gears

    • @FreeScience
      @FreeScience 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking about lubrication. I don't think it would affect that much, other than when a higher gear ratio stopped earlier than a lower. I guess one of the limiting factors is the latteral forces, which causes the gears to disengage. Maybe "binding" the frame would help.
