It may look innocuous, but no game I have ever played, with the possible exceptions of Diplomacy and Tigris and Euphrates has ever gotten people so damned agitated and annoyed. So yeah, be warned about this classic game. It can get feisty.
One thing I'd like to say: When I got into the hobby in 2018 I don't know how many 3MBG videos I watched, because it was a great starting point to get into modern board games, get insight into many games, and help find a way through the dense jungle of the many games on the market. Besides, watching/following you going from content creator to board game designer is a wonderful thing.

This was literally my wife and I’s gateway game. Even more so than Catan. We went on a road trip back in 2007 and played this game - just the two of us - for hours. Thanks for doing this video!!
I had a great time with all groups I played this with. I find it short enough so that any potential mean-ness doesn't really matter, esp. since, as you say, being mean doesn't win you the game. Great game.
Appreciate you using the classic version. I love the depth and diversity of the new edition, but the caricatures get pushed to appealing extremes in the original art
This was the first game in my modern collection, as a gift when I first moved to my own apartment. Mine has the same at as yours, includes an expansion with substitute roles and more buildings, fancier coins, but no tokens. I played it a lot as a two player game, and it misses the point a bit, but as a four player game it is fun and easy
In my early days of expanding my game collection to the bright world of 21st century boardgames, I accidentally got this thinking it was a different game I'd read about. Since that time it has been malingering around my collection getting buried under other boxes and passed over on game night after game night. Thanks for letting me recognize my instincts are good and this is NOT a game I would enjoy. Away it goes to someone else!
The new version if this game is really good, the new cards mix up the game well and the Witch is a less severe version of the Assassin for newer players. I frequently do play this with family (unofficially we also call this underbelly in reference to the TV series) but everyone goes into the game expecting to attack and be attacked so it is played in the right spirit. For me 3 players is best as each player gets two characters which means even if you one of your characters gets attacked you still can make progress with the other.
One of my worst gaming experiences ever was playing Citadels at 8 players. It dragged on for so long that I wanted to rip my hair out, I'm thinking like close to 2 hours, for a filler game... 2 of the players also had played it extensively and they actively dragged the game out by destroying buildings from the player with the most of them, AND they had analysis paralysis. I only play it at 4-6 players nowadays. I've heard a good deal of people really like it at 2 and 3 though.
For the love of god, get the new edition. Not only does it have three times the content of the original, but the art for the characters in the original production is HIDEOUS.
They sell both versions of the game in stores. This one is still the more commonly purchased one because its 1/3rd the price. That new edition is basically a deluxe version, and i try not to review deluxe or collectors editions where possible. Hence the choice to review classic citadels.
I'm gonna have to say it; probably the worst game I've ever played... Any game where players are forced to skip a turn, especially a game this short, is just not fun. This has a LOT to do with me somehow being CONSTANTLY assassinated the few times i played it. Often by the hands of 3MBG 😅

I don't actually own the new version, lol. The copy is my original set i got some time in the mid 2000's

Fascinating. It's sold a gazillion copies, and while not quite Catan or Ticket to ride levels of sales, definitely the next tier down from there
