      Take a look of South Africa's history. South Africa, at the time a british colony, took control over Namibia as a colony. Therefore making the only case of a 2nd order colony.

Most of the invaded territories came from the spanish and mexican wars with exceptions such as Hawaii and uninhabited islands like Wake island. All of this happened before 1919.

What I mean? one sentence: *Spanish Empire and their conquistadores* : the ones that simply wiped out three natives empires (aka: The Aztecs, the Mayas, and the Incas) and hundreds of small tribes either by straightforward slaughter or the diseases they brought. You can bitch about the US and their treatment of the natives but can't deny one thing, that the US still have entire communities of natives alive with their culture preserved and being pay reparations from the government, on the other hand, how many natives descendent of Aztec, Maya, and Inca are still alive and getting reparations from the Spanish government?

    If you think the US colonial empire was weird, wait until you see Australia's. Australia uses the power of being nice and countries just give it land.
    1884, The state of Queensland randomly annexes Papua for the British empire, the British were like, "What? Why would you do that?" Queensland replied, "So the Germans won't get it." 30 years later the British said, "It was nice of you to do that but we don't want it, you keep it."
    1901, New South Wales was like, "Hey Britain, can we make a country with the other colonies." Britain replied "Yeah sure but New Zealand can't join you can have Fiji though" "Nah, we'll just have the Australian states"
    1920, League of nations says, "Hey, Australia, good work in WW1, you can have New Guinea, the Solomon islands and Nauru." Australia replies, "Thanks guys, means a lot to me."
    1931, Britain asks, "Hey Australia you want some islands..." 3 years later Western Australia replies, "Yes! We can turn them into a conservation area.
    1933, Britain asks "Hey Australia, you want a land border with France?" "Where?" "Antarctica, we are thinking about giving New Zealand and South Africa some too." Australia replies, "How about you give us South Africa's bit too until they stop being racist?" Britain replies, "Great idea Australia!"
    1947, "Hey Australia, you want some volcano islands above Antarctica too?" "Okay."
    1955, "Hey Australia, how would you like to own the Cocos Islands?" "The What?" "They speak Malay and they are Muslim?" "...Sounds interesting okay."
    1958, Australia asks, "Excuse me Britain can you make Singapore give me the Christmas islands?" "You gonna pay for them?" "yeah of course" "Sure then"
    1969, Hold on a minute, the coral sea isn't part of Queensland? Get annexed fish.
    1975, East Timor is like, "Hey Australia can we join your country, It's better you take us over instead of Indonesia" "Sorry buddy, but that ain't happening, we'll guarantee your independence instead."
    Also 1975, Australia to Australia, "Papua and New Guinea aren't really that Australian are they?" "Let's make a new country."
    Still 1975, Papua and New Guinea are like, "What's a good name for our country?" Solomon Islands are like, "I don't know guys but I'm out."
    Still in 1975, Nauru is like, "Hey Australia, you remember how we are part of New guinea? "Yeah" "well now we ain't."

      @@Dangic23 Yes, because the Hawaiian people are in a state of rebellion. They demand their independence. No, wait, that's not happening. They're just fine with being a state. Oh, and technically, the US didn't launch a coup in Hawaii. There were two main factions in Hawaii: those who supported the monarchy, and those who didn't. While the US didn't really have an issue with the monarchy, the faction opposed to it was run by people who had strong connections with the US...especially American businesses. When they decided they were about ready to make their move, they reached out to their business associates in the US. They in turn convinced the US government to back the coup. That backing primarily took the form of logistics and transportation, which allowed them to get into position and make their move before the Hawaiian government's forces could get organized for an effective response. Once the coup succeeded in taking control, the US government immediately recognized the new government and offered their protection to guarantee that no European power would try to remove them from power. So, America's backing made it possible for the coup to be as quick and clean as it was, but they weren't the ones that organized it. Having said that, the ones who DID organize the coup were the business partners of some powerful American companies, so it's kind of hard to prove whether or not the American businesses were moving to help their partners because they figured it would make it easier for them to do business in Hawaii, or whether they encouraged their Hawaiian partners to organize the coup for the same reason. Either way, it doesn't look good. On the other hand, everything turned out well in the end.

    Puerto Rico, a US territory, voted a few times on independence, and rejected it each time. The terms of being a territory are actually quite good, with access to live and work in America, but when at home pay no federal income tax, while getting some federal funds for, say, superhighways. No vote in federal elections, except for a non-voting delegate to the House of Representatives. But Puerto Rico rejected statehood too multiple times. (It eventually voted to seek statehood, but after it had run up debts that it couldn't extinguish except by becoming a state.)

    • @Dangic23

      None of those votes have ever been valid.
      US Constitution does not require the consent of the inhabitants of an Unincorporated Territory to decide if it's made a state, a free country, or to cede it to another country.
      It only requires a simple majority vote in Congress.
      That's it.
      They can do this anytime....even next monday.
      But if you read the Insular cases.....you will learn that the US has never intended to add any Unincorporated Territory as a state.

    Why the double standard about manifest destiny? It sort of feels like you are defending the American conquest and subsequent subjugation of native lands by arguing that it was "kind of imperialism but not really". Just because it wasn't an overseas expansion doesn't disqualify it from counting as colonialism. Russia's expansion into Siberia is often rightfully called out as an example of imperialism and colonial expansion, so why can't America be held the same standards? The indifferent attitude towards the crimes commited by Americans in the name of manifest destiny is indicative of a widespread ignorance of historical understanding. When put in historical context, the conquest of the continental US can very easily be viewed as a continuation of the european-style colonialism that Britain, France and Spain brought to the American continent. I am not American, and I want to make it clear that I don't blame the descendants of European settlers for something that happened before their lifetime. But by not confronting the bloody history of your nation, you uphold the ignorant and dangerous idea of American supremacy that to this day continues to be used as justification for American military action towards other nations and the economic imperialism that involves the exploitation of the natural resources and industrial capacity of weaker countries by American companies. I apologize for the rant, but I am of the opinion that crimes committed by a society at the very least should be recognised and condemned by that same society before a process of reconciliation can begin.

      US bases are there at the Request of the Host Government, (With the technical exception of Okinawa, though how true to treaty the US will be with that is questionable. Since closing it down has been seriously considered.) and should either side of the Agreement decide to end it will be dismantled, as happened with France the first time they freaked the fuck out and left NATO because it didn't do exactly what they wanted at all times. More importantly in Europe, those bases are the primary defense, as they allow the US to get a massive concentration of forces there in days to weeks rather than months. Since those bases are primarily logistics and communications hubs.

First and foremost Manifest Destiny was a colonial conquest by the USA.

    • @TerryTerius
      @TerryTerius 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't think at any point morality was brought up, nor the conditions that the people lived in under US rule vs European. Just that, in most cases, US possessions were temporary vs European powers permanently settling land. I guess you can interpret that to say that it's "not a bad thing" but that's literally just stating a difference of time and purpose.

    • @TheLocalLt
      @TheLocalLt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Matt Finkel neither colonialism was “bad” they were natural evolutions of the human condition and also in my opinion partly the legacy of Rome. America wouldn’t have forced the European powers to get rid of their empires if the Soviet Union wasn’t there to exploit them. In fact I believe the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, along with anti-terrorist operations in Africa, are indications of annoyance that western power no longer extends directly over large sections of the globe. But they did what was politically convenient at the time to get a heads up on the Soviets.

      robin97rv America did force the Euros to get rid of colonies in areas of the world where the Soviets were sponsoring the “anti-colonial” movements. The Caribbean was an exception, as even after Cuba went communist there was less of a threat in the region, with the Cubans mainly sponsoring communist movements in South America instead. But for example America made the Netherlands get rid of the Dutch East Indies because they thought the Dutch destroying the rebellious local government would cause the rise of communism, which had been widespread on the islands 2-3 years earlier.

    This territorial extent lasts for approximately 300 days when the United States begins the occupation of South Korea on September 8, 1945 and it ended when the Philippines was granted independence on July 4, 1946.
    The United States would have been the world’s second largest country by area, covering 2.09% of the world’s total land area, or 47.53% of the area of all of the former Soviet Union combined.

      The current US states were populated by settlers from the other states that moved West. They were mostly Anglos/Europeans. No so Guam, Samoa, PR., USVI. and so on. So to get the US congress to approve those non-Anglo/ mostly non-European territories for Statehood is an uphill battle especially with PR. which for all intended purposes is a Spanish speaking Latin American nation. When it comes to Independence, some US states do plenty of business with some of these territories. Cutting them lose means losing trade which is a no no. For example, the US economy makes much more from PR. then it gives them so some say they have dragged there feet when it comes to deciding there political status.
