Hello and welcome to Within the Frame. Coming to you live from Seoul, I’m Han Da-eun.
NewJeans are once again in the global spotlight, but this time, it’s not for their music or fashion. It’s about the power clash between the CEO of their agency ADOR and its parent company, HYBE. Meanwhile, K-cinema continues to captivate audiences worldwide, garnering recognition from prestigious film festivals like Cannes and the Beijing International Film Festival. On this episode of Within the Frame, we bring you a two-part special, delving into the latest buzz in both the K-pop and K-cinema realms. First, we begin with the K-pop scene, and for that we have Bernie Cho, President of DFSB Kollective joining us via Zoom.
Q1. First, give us a snapshot of the internal strife within HYBE. What is the primary source of conflict, and what are the respective positions being asserted by HYBE and its subsidiary, ADOR?
Q2. One main cause of the conflict is ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin’s claims that HYBE label’s new girl group ILLIT copied NewJeans in all areas. What’s your take?
Q3. Some point out that the rare conflict, the likes of which have almost been non-existent in the K-pop industry, may be due to the multi-label system pioneered by HYBE. HYBE owns Big Hit Entertainment behind BTS, Belift Lab for boy band ENHYPEN, Source Music for Lesserafim, and a few others. What are the problems and challenges of the multi-label system?
+What are your thoughts on housing several subsidiary labels under one roof?
Q4. Let’s take a look at other major K-pop labels like JYP, SM, and YG Entertainment. What system are they adopting, and why have we not seen any conflicts within those giant labels thus far?
Q5. NewJeans are poised to release a new single next month and there are many questions about what the future holds for the K-pop sensation. How would the clash between HYBE and ADOR impact their highly-anticipated return, and their future ventures?
Now to the latest buzz surrounding K-cinema Director Ryu Seung-wan's action-packed sequel, "Veteran" secured a coveted spot in the Cannes festival's midnight screening category. Meanwhile, the gripping occult blockbuster "Exhuma" maintains its hold on global audiences, getting an invitation from China's prominent film festival. Let’s now delve into these stories and more, with Jason Bechervaise, Film Critic and Professor at Kyungdong University, who joins us in the studio.
Q1. The sequel to "Veteran," "I, the Executioner" earned a ticket to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival being listed in the midnight screening category. Tell us a bit about the category, and what significance does the invitation hold?
Q2. No Korean movies were selected for the “In Competition” category at the Cannes festival, and this, for two straight years. What are the implications for the Korean movie industry?
Q3. Megahit occult thriller ‘Exhuma’, after hitting the ten million milestone, has been invited to the Beijing International Film Festival, which is quite rare due to China’s culture ban on K-contents that’s still rampant across various realms. How do you see this?
Q4. 'The Roundup: Punishment' set a Korean box office record for opening day sales, surpassing 1.3 million spectators in just two days. The third installment was largely considered a bit iffy, but what are your prospects for the latest one?
Q5. The 25th Jeonju International Film Festival will kick off next Wednesday. What are the key watchpoints?
And that brings us to the end of this show.
Thank you for watching, Good bye for now.

Min Hee Jin is saying how a same company would copy her work same way and by doing so it hurts both New Jeans and Illit. She's not saying you can't copy her.

I think they copied newjeans clover 🍀 concept which minheejin built as comeback for newjeans I guess .I was waiting for Newjean's comeback for a long time. During their performance in golden disc award this year they showed some hints with Clover 🍀 . I guessed some fresh vibe songs will be coming from NewJeans. I always respect Min heejun working meticulously hardly in great detail and new jeans members also worked hard . Back to back comeback. Some events they were running to succeed which I admire their hardwork and effort they put as bunny.I think lucky girl syndrome is something new jeans would have in their comeback. The tune, melody and concept may be used for illit I guess. I was watching for an illit debut also as a fan but I thought illit would have a strong concept. Their concepts would like between the concepts of lesserfim and newjeans these types of performance are made in the auditions. At least they should have debuted with a mix of strong and trendy songs. That is what I expected but their performance was good. Now how Min heejun must work harder to do a breakthrough. I think if she brainstorm she can make a successful comeback for new jeans I guess .It must have stressed out her.I want her focus on Newjeans girls they are working hard don't make it tougher. At the same time if she needs some time to make a new concept or work on different ideas which may suit This is like a test period for herself.Sometimes it will be harder but I think they make it through I guess with conversation

I really appreciate this clear explanation of the Hybe-Ador conflict. I totally support MHJ and hope it can be resolved in some way for the sake of Newjeans.

There’s no copyright infringement. Hybe owns all of Ador’s IP and therefore NJ, so if they decide to replicate some of those ideas into new group that they too would own the IP of, is theirs to do so.

Let's look at the main complaint issued against HYBE, plagerism, stealing concepts of a gg. To me that makes no sense. The entire KPOP industry was founded on US Black music structured on the Motown system. The Koreans made a few improvements to create KPOP. They admit this, it's not a secret. I applaud them for it. When I look at New Jeans or any KPOP gg I automatically think of TLC, Destiny Child, The Supremes. For boy groups I think of The Jackson 5, Boys To Men, Back Street Boys. So who is copying who? MJH doesn't own gg concepts, no one does. If we agree with her she should be paying money to the US music industry for copying from them.
She needs to come up with a better and stronger defense when she goes to court. Putting on a public tantrum will only get her so much sympathy. The courts don't care about her tears they want proof of wrong doing. And leave the kids out of this fight they don't deserve this.

taking inspirations, especially from western/international market and taking it to Korea vs copying someone who is under the same label is very different. I don't think being inspired by another artist is unique throughout music history...but Oasis looking like The Beatles, is different from Illit suddenly looking like Newjeans under the same label, in a matter of few months of difference.
I don't think anyone can dispute that Newjeans introduced a very different presentation and sound compared to other Kpop groups and its just weird that Illit suddenly popped up and seems to have a lot in common with Newjeans.--- glaringly apparent that people were already seeing they're trying to copy Newjeans even before they debuted.

@@boredbeck Sorry, I don't see where there is copying of a concept here. I see inspiration. New Jeans have not created a new concept. What they are doing has been done before, look at any other gg, they took a formula that was already established and added their own flavor, and there is nothing wrong with that. The courts will decide this issue, both parties will have a chance to prove their case. I look forward to the trial and wish no harm to the girls.

@@aspasia1705 again, youre conflating "copying" and "taking inspirations"

@@boredbeck I don't think so, that is why there are courts and guidelines to settle cases like this. It doesn't matter what we think when they go to court all that matters is proof backed by evidence.

It's nt about plagiarism, but about money .
It was this provision the two parties were negotiating up to the audit of 22 Apr. HB said that the reason that they couldn't come to an agreement was because the two couldn't agree to the amount of compensation for the 4.5%.
HB offered 13x the average operating profit over two years while MHJ wanted 20x for the 4.5%.
MHJ claimed she was only paid 2B however, 2B is her salary and she receives incentive pay calculated separately. Her salary is the highest of all individuals across HB and the Korean subsidiaries. In addition to her salary, HB gave her stock.
Records obtained during the audit show instructions by MHJ beginning in April to prepare for a battle of public opinion and to create noise to harass the company. MHJ is threatening the company by using the artist as hostage. if Hybe accepts the compensation demands
then it's all good, but if not, they will use this as a pretext to end the relationship.
Now she execute 3/5 of her plans (from the ss evidence of her convo with her VP A)
    2. Critical appeal for everything HB does
    3. Think of away to harass HB
    5. Preparation for public opinions in May (*but started nw)
    Everything is daebak.

This makes me think that min he jin is all about her without thinking about her nj and other artist. If it is between bang and min he jin, just deal it with just them and not drag others.

      HB punya 80% saham ADR..

min heejin is a classic case of someone with an overblown sense of self who is greedy and overambitious. hybe owns 80% of ador. min heejin only has 18% (which was given to her by hybe), with 2% owned by other ador directors. in other words, min heejin is just another employee of hybe, albeit with some shares. people forget that unlike bang sihyuk, min heejin isn't even a producer, composer, or songwriter. she's just a graphic artist and art director. the truth is, she's an image maker, not even a musician. that's why she was tasked to do branding at hybe. so all of her talk about "plagiarism" is a joke. she's also making herself look important and her role in hybe much bigger than it actually is. perhaps for the benefit of possible investors to her now-failed and ill-advised adventure? new jeans is only one of the artists under hybe. enhypen, txt, seventeen, and bts are all hybe artists -- much much bigger artists than new jeans -- that are listed as part of the 15 best-selling kpop groups of all time. new jeans does not even come close. without bang sihyuk or hybe giving her the opportunity to run a company and manage a group, she'd still be a relative unknown. too bad she abused and wasted that opportunity -- she decided instead to bite the hand that feeds her.
