  • I'm pretty glad I was able to find this, this will be replacing my horrible Crosley record killer. The Turntable I got was a Fisher turntable. Model number MT-6225

The Fisher model here was the first one that I was aware of using the platter as part of the motor in a direct drive mode. It seems technically advance as such. I can't remember if it measured good and had good fidelity compared to more conventional direct drive turntables of the day. I would assume it was supposed to elevate the motor performance which is only part of the whole that makes a turntable sound good. The tonearm will also affect the sound to a high degree followed by the particular method of eliminating sources of external rumble. I still like the method of the AR turntables "sprung" 3-point suspension for that. I am intrigued by this kind of drive system and wonder why so few turntables ever came to market using this technology.

I just bought one a few days ago and there is a noise as it rotates. It sounds like one of the two aluminum tabs within the circles underneath are striking something. I suspect it is hitting the little metal tab on the return mechanism. Can you check your platter to see if there is any wear on either of the tabs on the platter.?
I was wrong. I think I found the source of the noise.
Where the ends of the magnetized rubber ferrite band on the rotar/platter are fused together seems to be making contact with the stator motor's plastic cover.

Zestypanda: I have owned a Fisher MT 6225 since they came out 1977, and also the MT 6250 (quartz locked rpm frequency to eliminate variations in speed through the electrical current) and they were the first ones to offer the 'no moving parts' magnetic drive for a sane price-Bang and Olufsen of Denmark adopted this system with its $1K plus model 8002. They both have been through several cartridges and still perform beautifully-more reliable than a Technics or Sony from the time period....Enjoy!

Thanks you for the insight! I have learned to take any brand wars with a grain of salt. I understand how audiophiles are steadfast in disagreeing, or agreeing, with a brand with little to no reason other than pure dogmatism. So far the turntable has been performing quite lovely, and the cartridge it has sounds great.

No problem-just as a curiosity, take a look at how much you would have to spend today (inflation adjustment if the Fisher MT 6225, bought new, was still made). I paid $229 in 1977. (I bought the MT 6250 years later, used). This is from an inflation calculator from a major bank. $229 in June of 1977 has the same buying power as $926.27 in August of 2017. Yes, that was a lot of money for a 15 year old to spend on a turntable! But it is still going strong! You'd never pay that for Crosley Quality I am sure....the average discount store turntable back then was a record changer, actually and they cost around $59. The Fisher was only sold by Audio stores-It was in the upper class of audio gear back then.

I just bought this turntable and i have the same issue but i notice when it tries to spin, i hear grinding . Almost as the platter is grinding on that black plastic that has the coils.

Great buy! I’m not a “vinyl guy” per se. but I do want a turn tablee as a lot of nifty stuff is getting reissued, etc. that interests me, and this model is what I’m looking for. I know it’s not the best thing ever, but from the forums I’ve perused so far, this Fisher is solid. Also, and mainly, it’ll ,at match , and compliment my Fisher Studio Standard head unit. I’m looking for a decent era correct 3 head cassette deck. What can I say, a sucker for that metal, and wood look! I can admit that growing up I didn’t dig on vinyl because it seemed a hassle. My tastes were not as refined yet, and I get that this model is mid level-ish, but it’ll do for me! Now if I too can only find a 5 dollar deal!!

hey man, I have bought some turntable, I want to ask you how did you take that plate off?

Rotate until the holes align with the pin underneath and pull upwards. It will click and then you can remove it.
