The awkward parts of Sky Rocket that meander high in the air are the parts where the loading station for Turnpike would've been. Unfortunately, after building Sky Rocket, the ride's structure took up more land than expected which caused the project of reinstalling Turnpike to be scrapped. Also, you're correct about the top spin that used to be in that spot. It was called King Kahuna and only lasted a handful of seasons due to maintenence issues and an incident that caused riders to stall upside down making the ride lose popularity.
