Robert’s posture 💯! Met him at the Plantrician conference in 2017 which I photographed. Had the opportunity to sit and eat with him a few times and discuss our regimens. Such an awesome humble dude - positive energy flows from this brother. It was also cool to meet Rich who spoke at the conference.
I cannot wait to read this! Thank you so much for having them on. I’m 31, a 5’3” female (vegan for twelve years), and am just now starting my bodybuilding journey. Amazing inspiration!!🌿
This was great! I love hearing from people with a history in animal agriculture. My undergrad bachelor's degree is in Agriculture with a focus on Animal and Dairy Science (obviously pre-vegan). I have felt better mentally, physically, and spiritually these past years being plant-based vegan than I ever have in my life. I found a sense of peace I never even knew I was missing. Just pre-ordered the book, and I can't wait to get it. =)

Joey and Ed would probably be better guests anyway!
Rich, Matt and Robert- Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge about eating plant-based! In particular your discussion about raising kids on a plant-based diet ~1 hr 20 min really hit home. Last night my 10-year-old daughter said, "Mom, I hate to tell you this, but I don't think I want to eat vegan anymore. I never wanted to eat vegan to begin with anyway." This did not surprise me because she is one of those kids who likes saying exactly...what she thinks...you most don't want to hear...just to see how you respond. A couple of years ago when she was still eating animal foods, she saw how I was eating WFPB and wanted to become vegan like me. You get the picture, I'm sure. Plus, like mother-like daughter, she questions everything. We must be doing some things right! :) Anyhow, I've been eating plant-based now for 4 years and my family has transitioned to ~95% plant-based over the last couple years. My husband and I want to allow our daughter (and our 7-yr old son) to make their own minds up on big things like religion and diet, but it's challenging not dictating what they eat when you know that what you eat really matters long-term. On top of that, my daughter says she just wants to eat like her friends and eat like "normal people" (the kids at her school are mostly eating a typical omnivore diet). Rich, I think you could do a whole separate podcast on how to navigate the fine line of raising healthy kids in a world where eating optimal is not the norm...please consider! Of course, I want our kids to be independent-minded, but at the same time I want them to benefit from what I have learned so they don't suffer some of the consequences I have from previously eating a SAD diet when I just didn't have the knowledge. Thanks so much! #mountainfootballkid

Thanks so much for this episode. Great point at 31:15!!!! I have been plant based for over 10 years and one of the most difficult obstacles to overcome is the small differences in all of the recommendations that can drive a person to the edge of giving up. For example- one physician saying yes to nuts, maple syrup, or a small amount of salt, and one not being okay with it, or saying you have to restrict starches, eliminate all nuts, ect ect. It is something that is a HUGE HUGE problem and is *THE* elephant in the vegan kitchen. I hope someone will address this one day because in my opinion, the in-fighting amongst the vegan community can bring about its ruin and will cause a lot people to experience self guilt and orthorexia.

Great podcast. I listen to all the plant based programs. Learn something new every time. Just 1comment though. I've been plant based for 5 years now. However I was recently diagnosed with NCGS-non celiac gluten sensitivity. Suffering from headaches, body pain, cerebral ataxia, fatigue etc. This being an issue I have to avoid all wheat, rye, and barely products. Maybe this can be a topic for those eating a Vegan and plant based diet? Would really like to see some more attention brought to this issue. Thanks for all the great podcast.
If you are eating whole foods, it is actually not at all difficult to avoid gluten on a PB diet. I do it myself and have lots of friends who do. Good luck and hope you’re back to feeling well again soon.
Again another great podcast thank you so much Rich! I wish you would invite John McDougall and even Dr. Furman , individually though, because you have a great gift, as you manage always to leave the other one person you’re interviewing in their own worth and to bring out their own best messages and sharing’s

I became a vegetarian in 1988. There was not much information in Spain at the time. I lost a lot of muscular weight as a result (I was bodybuilding then, since 1979). I kept being a vegetarian until 42 years old. During all of those years of vegetarianism (18) I was combining bodybuilding with running on a daily basis. I weighted under 60 kgs for 1,76m (132 pounds/5 feet 9 inches) and my libido was zero. An evening a car knocked me down while I was jogging and during the month I spent without working out made my mind up to make a change. I began eating an omnivore diet and that entailed a turning point in my life (at that moment I hadn't had sex for 20 solid years). Now I am about to turn 57 and I haven't eaten any kind of meat for one month (to be honest, chicken and turkey were the only meats I've eaten in the past 15 years). I was feeling fine, health is not the question. It has to do with animals' lives. As Robert wholeheartedly explains on the podcast, it is a matter of empathy with other sentient beings. Perhaps the whole issue boils down to that fact.
That's quite funny. Since I turned vegan many years ago, I've been getting massive morning wood as if I was 14 y.o. again. To the point of this being embarrassing :) This is not to mention what happened to my sex drive. Not sure if this is more of a benefit or a problem, honestly, haha. But yeah, when you don't quite know what you're doing, you can easily undereat a lot and lose your mojo due to the pure lack of nutrition. Just be mindful of that the lower caloric density can mean you're consuming less than you should. Track your diet in Cronometer / MyFitnessPal for a month or so or just find some dietician-made meal plans when you're transitioning
@@Limemill Thank you so much for the advice. By the way, fist time I come across "morning wood". I've looked for the meaning on Google and, well, you made my day 😆 Thanks a lot for the idiomatic expression!

At about 2:12 Rich says it could be hard to get top athletes to bet their careers on switching to this diet. He later says it's better for athletes in the twilight of their careers. But I think even for athletes in their primes, the main advantage of recovery needs to be emphasized. That's what James Wilks says got him to try it in the Gamechangers movie. Lots of top athletes get injured and could get intrigued to try this during rehab. Also on training and aging. I am 68. Supposedly I have to train intensely less often because old people don't recover as fast. That's not true for me at all on this diet. I recover from hard workouts just as fast as when I was younger
Hello from Belgium, Europe, I really loved to listen to Robert, i think he is a very good speaker, thanks to Matt also. Thank you to Rich Roll for creating these podcasts. I have been eating plant based for two years now. I always ate quite healthy, but did eat some meat (Organic grass fed) and some eggs from chick from an organic farm near by i live. But now, since i have been eating plant based, i seem to have problems with my liver, and i am trying to find out what's going wrong. I eat lots of green leaf and vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, some legumes, rice, quinoa, potatoes, sweet potatoes etc ( iam am allergic to dairy and we don't eat gluten). So i wonder what i am doing wrong...So maybe i am not eating enough? ( I bike a lot (every day for two or three hours) and have an active life. I don't want to eat meat or any animals, i cannot anymore. So my search for foods to improve my liver problems (and toxins staying in my body) have'nt been easy... Thank you Love Michèle
WHY NOT TRY GERSON PROTOCOL. -- COFFEE ENEMAS TO DETOX LIVER FROM YEARS OF CONSUMING ANIMAL PRODUCTS OF WHICH TOXICITIES PROBABLY ARE NOW COMING FORTH AND NEED TO BE DETOXED FROM YOUR BODY.
Excellent interview! Just ordered the book and am looking forward to reading. Just have to say I've been using the Complement supplement for several months now and it is amazing. Love how it's responsibly sourced and produced. Same goes for their protein powder!
ive been trying to go more plant based but when i get really busy, i keep opting for easy options like chicken (which now can be microwaved in 2 min) and potato chips (instead of cutting up my own potato and cooking it). But im encouraged to try again
I'm not vegetarian, but recently had a party that had very limited plates with meat or dairy simply because it's hot here now -- many of the folks I invited really appreciated that, but a couple just didn't eat anything because they "don't like vegetables". I didn't see that coming.
Its an unfortunate reality that most people are suffering from a Mumpsimus when it comes to the belief about Plant Protein. Mumpsimus meaning; - (A traditional custom or notion adhered to although shown to be unreasonable. A person who obstinately adheres to unreasonable customs or notions. A bigoted adherent to exposed but customary error)
Excellent episode. I simply say, to the "protein" Q, I get my protein from the same place the animals you eat get theirs, plants. I don't engage in long conversations anymore and always invite friends and neighbors to chat about being a whole food plant eater and swimmer another time. I'm still waiting......
Should have had Coach Chris Hauth sit in for the podcast, he might have learnt something about plant based nutrition being adequate for athletes and the general population...
Sure... eating the plant based garbage and not eating high quality animals with tons of depletion from denatured plant frankenfood like crappy fake cheeses and coke..the s.a d. diet will get you deficiencies.
Italian plnt-based is less compact among people but is more confident and more expert. The need for B12 is worldwide as everybody is low in B12. But are we sure low protein could not be protein free. And does anyone can suggest studies with no refined fat added diet? I guess we will discover new thing in the next future. Your are all of you an inspiration, and your mouvement is great support specially in easter time.
The protein issue is population observation, those who have eaten more unprocessed beans or meat have much higher micronutrient intake. Refined protein is about as useful as refined oil or sugar or carbohydrates.
ALL plants have all the Amino Acids, essential and non essential. Diversity of plants is the key because rice is low in Lysine and Broccoli is low in Methionine. But no one eats only rice or Broccoli.
my personal rough guide is : L/Lysine = Legumes and M/Methionine = Meal (the original word for grains). But, I avoid grains/meal now and eat seeds instead and seed are very high in methionine. My current challenge is to make nuts and seeds soft enough to grind into a paste to sub for bottled oils. ...and then make them blend the right way with legumes and spices to taste great - kind of like hummus tastes great.
@Jodie Masterson Go enlighten yourself and become more educated. Watch this lecture th-cam.com/video/CSRCMpWjkqM/w-d-xo.html If you haven't got the patience to watch the whole lecture watch from 59 minutes in, and then come and apologize.
@@lechsiz1642 If you buy a coffee grinder you can grind your nuts and seeds down to a fine powder. I do this with Flax, Sesame and Poppy seeds so as make all the nutrients readily available.
@@mikemasail823 thanks. I'll do that eventually. been meaning to. Am I overly picky or buying old rancid flaxseed or does it really taste a bit like fish oil? I love chia, but flax...no.
Great podcast! Interestingly enough....raising rabbits for food was the primary impetus for shifting my values to plant based eating. A deep dive into my nightmarish reluctance to face harvest day gave me the insight into my true feelings about eating animals. A full day of skinning and gutting beheaded rabbits that were still shivering after death made me seriously rethink my diet choices and personal ethics. One of the things that bothers me about vegan athletes is the reliance on supplemental vegan protein powders. Many vegan influencers give the impression that you can get all the protein you need by eating just plants except most of them actually supplement with plant based protein "products" (which they also promote and/or sell). Which is true? A "whole food" plant diet is adequate in protein? Or not?
Look up Susan Pierce Thompson. She has a great program for vegan weight loss. Stay away from vegan junk food and oils. I lost 25 lbs when went plant based.
1. Calculate your daily maintenance calories and try to go 300 kcal below 2. Get yourself a nutrition tracking app like myfitnesspal ( free version is more than enough) 3. Track your food and beverage intake for at least one month ( better half year) so you get to understand what you're putting into your system. Don't forget the oil. 4. Try to hit 1 gram of protein per kg per day!!! If you're doing sports like crossfit make it double... It might be hard to get to your daily protein score by eating vegan food so get yourself a vegan protein powder. 5. Exercise! If you happen to be in recovery or bad shape, 4 long walks ( 7k plus) a week will do for the start. Remember, the bigger the muscle the more calories you burn so slow steady cardio itself might make it hard to loose excessive body fat. Include some high intensity training like burpees or kettlebell exercise or swimming - include 25 and 50meter sprints! 6. No/low sugar especially in drinks, no alcohol! The nutrition tracking app is not gonna lie to you... 7. It's never the weight but the body fat percentage. 8. It's not a crash diet but a choice. 9. Supplement B12 , 5μg per day. 10. Hydrate !water!, lemon water, coconut water, tea, vegan milk... 11. Sleep properly. 12. Trust in the process and have fun!!!
I stated the plant base diet from in ninety but I did it wrong I try the New York City I did not the Marthron race I finish 18.6 it was getting dark and I was getting tired so I decided to quite
I ordered their book and I am taking Complement. I don't go on cruises -- I wish they would be banned because they pollute the ocean... anyway I lost 40 pounds plant-based oil free and now that I've seem to stabilize I am increasing the fats because I really need them for my brain health my mental health for a healthy diet. Low fat weight loss is for people I think that are having extremely hard time with eight loss and health issues...But it's interesting the point they bring up...I think about that...

Love and appreciate the vulnerability of these men!
Whole food plant based diet no oil no refined sugar no highly processed foods , no high salt, I love fresh fruit and veggies grains beans nuts seeds dark leafy greens herbs and spices lots of water exercise love and joy fellowship gratitude
I've looked for the meaning on Google and, well, you made my day 😆
Thanks a lot for the idiomatic expression!
@@jorgeromera3861 Take care brother, haha :)

Yes, exactly! We need to educate ourselves all our lives - put some knowledge into our head! Thank you Rich! Great interview! 🤩🤗
💯💯 💯
Profound truth
Just got the book! Can't wait to give it a read. Thanks for having them on Rich
I'm really enjoying listening to the book on Audible. It really is a great book, so far!
Fantastic interview! I bought 2 books and will get at least 2 more for additional gifts 🎁🌱💪🏼 Thank you guys! 👍🏼💗
Just what I needed!
COFFEE ENEMAS TO DETOX LIVER FROM YEARS OF CONSUMING ANIMAL PRODUCTS OF WHICH TOXICITIES PROBABLY ARE NOW COMING FORTH AND NEED TO BE DETOXED FROM YOUR BODY.
Love the new haircut & glasses combo rich. Looking happy & great!
The book arrived yesterday! Great addition to the podcast- will definitely help in advocacy 🌱🌱🌱👏🏽👏🏽
There were "Food Not Bombs" peeps at my community garden in NY
Thank you!
Pre-ordered book a couple weeks ago-----
Anxiously awaiting!
please keep it under an hour this is insane
I'm not vegetarian, but recently had a party that had very limited plates with meat or dairy simply because it's hot here now -- many of the folks I invited really appreciated that, but a couple just didn't eat anything because they "don't like vegetables". I didn't see that coming.
Great interview! Thanks!!
I'd participate in the adequate protein study.
Soooo excited about this one ! Thanks and much love xxx
From the UK!
Awesome guys!! Thanks rich
Great episode, one of the best.
I got the book and am loving it. So easy to understand and absorb
Excellent episode. I simply say, to the "protein" Q, I get my protein from the same place the animals you eat get theirs, plants. I don't engage in long conversations anymore and always invite friends and neighbors to chat about being a whole food plant eater and swimmer another time. I'm still waiting......
please can someone tell me what mic rich uses??????????
Great Podcast as always Rich
Should have had Coach Chris Hauth sit in for the podcast, he might have learnt something about plant based nutrition being adequate for athletes and the general population...
Even meat eaters are often deficient in B12.
Sure... eating the plant based garbage and not eating high quality animals with tons of depletion from denatured plant frankenfood like crappy fake cheeses and coke..the s.a d. diet will get you deficiencies.
Mention the name of the book at the end!
I’m up for helping there Robert. Having hit 40 I’m happy to participate in such a study
Great great video!!
Great guests! Are you going to interview Iron Cowboy after his 100????
Should also interview Ray Zahab - another amazing super long distance athlete.
Great podcast guys, just went out and got the book!
@Jodie Masterson you obviously are ignorant of the plant protein profile.
@Jodie Masterson Go enlighten yourself and become more educated. Watch this lecture th-cam.com/video/CSRCMpWjkqM/w-d-xo.html
If you haven't got the patience to watch the whole lecture watch from 59 minutes in, and then come and apologize.
Or not?
Was Vanessa Espinoza in Your Story about how You Got Started, Abby Espinoza The Great Featherweight Boxer's Daughter???
Definitely getting their book
Super interesting and inspirational
I just turn 71 and never had a stroke I was going green juicing
Welcome to Foco! Many vegan options out here, and if youre in the mood for donuts, Foco Doco makes vegan donuts!
Any advice for a person who went plant based but actually put on a lot of weight after? What am I doing wrong? Lol
Look up Susan Pierce Thompson. She has a great program for vegan weight loss. Stay away from vegan junk food and oils. I lost 25 lbs when went plant based.
1. Calculate your daily maintenance calories and try to go 300 kcal below
2. Get yourself a nutrition tracking app like myfitnesspal ( free version is more than enough)
3. Track your food and beverage intake for at least one month ( better half year) so you get to understand
what you're putting into your system.
You’re eating vegan. That’s the problem. Go back to animal based foods and eat inside your goals for weight/muscle and you’ll thrive.
Opps 🤦🏼♀️ I meant Chef AJ. I haven’t used her program but many have had great success.
Comes out tomorrow but just pre-ordered 😀
I wonder why Patrick Baboumian isn’t in the book? Love all the stories and “day in the life” of all the vegan athletes. Plus, their go to recipes.
I stated the plant base diet from in ninety but I did it wrong I try the New York City I did not the Marthron race I finish 18.6 it was getting dark and I was getting tired so I decided to quite
What about protein suppositories? :)
The only way 👍
The idea of the perfect plant based diet, with no processed foods, is a trap. I'm glad they addressed it.
Does someone remember the name of a raw food bodybuilder that was quite famous 15-20 years ago ?
Charlie Abel and some guy named Wade come to mind. I looked up Wade and than Wade Lightheart came up. But that doesn't really sound familiar to me.
