Please put your shield in your off hand. I know the shield gets in the way and it can be more convenient for placing torches but that shield will save you much better if it’s in your off hand.

Not sure what he did but if your looking for a connecting glass their is a mod for all versions called connected glass which let's you craft glass that connects like that
