You guys seem to misunderstand what the "most powerful alchemy" is. The master meant "Fire Alchemy". Mustang had not yet learned it when his master died. His master had only taught him normal alchemy. Mustang learned how to use his Fire Alchemy when studying the schematics for it on Hawkeye's back.

Flame Alchemy was the research
also the strongest alchemy. The basic of flame alchemy is manipulating combustable gases around flamable object, which means technically flame alchemy can burn ANYTHING as long as there is air or even water surrounding the object.
Also, Mustang know the research, and he was the one responsible for damage in Hawkeye back. After Hawkeye show him she asked Mustang to burn the tatto in hope no one other than Mustang can learn the flame alchemy

In the manga Riza joined the military officer school (like Mustang before her) and was sent to Ishval in her last year as a sniper due to her skills. There was a shortage of men at that time so the high command sent the students to war as their "last year internship".
I don't know about flame alchemy being better than crimson. Kimblee just creates direct explosions.
@@Priceluked Kimblee also doesn't have the same level of Control as Mustang. Mustang's control is absurd because he transmutes oxygen molecules directly into the combustion.
Btw, Ed says (when the dog falls on him) "this happens a lot", direct reference to ep 4 when Nina's dog alexander did the same thing. (haven't seen the video yet, don't know if they saw that)

I just realized that Exec. Order 3066 is probably referring to Exec. Order 9066, which created internment camps for U.S. citizens of Japanese, German, and Italian heritage. Arakawa did such a good job relating this show to real life. It’s one of the main reasons I feel FMA is so much better than every other series.
Hues was a Lt. Colonel. thats why you thought he was a a different rank. Flame alchemy was the most powerful alchemy that Hawkeye said he created because of how much power it has despite being so simple in function.

The most powerful alchemy that Master Hawkeye completed was none other than Mustang's specialization, Flame Alchemy.
best part of watching these reactions is the looks on their faces when ever hughs and his family show up. Everytime you start to forget about it they have to remind you that you're supposed to be sad.

Calvin is right, all the other alchemists use glyphs on their gloves or gauntlets, only Ed, and Teacher so far can use the "clap" and thats because their own body becomes to circle.

He was actually Major Hughes when we met him. ((Canonically anyways)) He became Lt. Colonel off screen before he came back into the story.
6:55 The most horrifying thing about this scene and the reason why I think Kimblee is the most honest character in the show, she doesn’t immediately deny his accusation that she enjoys successfully killing someone. Kimblee, on the other hand, is fully aware of how many people he kills and how brutal his methods are. His advice of looking your victim in the eyes and remembering their faces because they sure as hell won’t forget yours has stayed with me to this day: if you’re going to do something that may end up with someone getting hurt, remember their faces, they deserve at least that much respect.

About that, and I may have just missed it in the manga or whatnot (read it only twice), but I've always wondered why Kimblee still needed to clap his hands together to "form a circle" when he already has his alchemy's arrays tattooed on his palms. It has always mildly bothered me, lol. Did he need to clap his palms together to "combine" the arrays somewhat?

Berthold was referring to "flame alchemy" when he said the most powerful alchemy. It's common for researchers to overvalue their research like that, because they committed their whole life for it. Plus, fire IS a very powerful destruction device.

He was also Captain Hughes in the Ishal War Flashback and I believe Major Hughes when first seen but had become Lt. Colonel by the time Elric's had met him.

I'm surprised they didn't mention/notice the fact that hawkeyes "tatoos" are actually scars fromwhere her father burned his research into her back I can't actually remeber if that's mentioned in the episode or only in the manga

God damn, it feels weirdly uncomfortable when they show the military slaughtering innocents by the dozens/hundreds and then do some feel-good stuff with Hughes talking about how he can go home to his daughter soon. Like...maybe that's the point, but it feels so messed up to juxtapose the extermination of an entire race, families being slaughtered, even a child crying amidst dead bodies with a man happily thinking about how he has people waiting safely for him back home.
Its definitely not weird to find mass slaughter uncomfortable.
No one there save Kimblee wants to be there. Hughes was just using his beloved Girlfriend as a reason to stay sane and live another day.
There's a reason soldiers are often suicide risks.
Or maybe Hughes is a selfish asshole, ignoring the suffering and similar desires of a whole people.
That may have been Arakawas goal. She said that she was surprised that people loved Hughes so much. Arakawa had a way more neutral depiction of this part of the story for a good reason.
i think that's what arakawa was going for, that even the nicest people are capable of atrocities and even war criminals have families and people they love. humanizing villains like that is important because no true monsters exist in the world. we are all capable of enormous good and evil, and we have to remember that.

Basque Grand is the man who protected Louge Lowe when he offered his life up in exchange for his people’s lives, bringing him to Brigadier-General Fessler in the hopes that it would bring a swift end to the conflict, Fessler proved himself to be a much lesser man than Grand when he remained committed to the wholesale slaughter of the Ishvalans, and refused the requested meeting with King Bradley, Grand being a man of his word took out his gun and shot his superior officer, and assumed his role in the command structure, this event was witnessed by more than a handful soldiers, including then captain Hughes, with all present at the time vouching for Grand, by covering up the true cause of death, by claiming it was caused by a stray bullet, Lowe was grateful, and offered his thanks for Grand’s actions, he merely told him that he hoped negotiations would proceed smoothly, which makes the death of Grand a tragedy.

Kimblee is my favourite character. The rest of my favs, are Ling, Scar, King Bradley, Mustang and Hawkeye. There's a few more that I can't mention this early in the show

i feel like sometimes you guys are over-looking things. instead of trying to capture the nitpicking details, just have a look back at the big picture after the episode. not trying to criticize, just trying to help you guys not further confuse yourselves.

Are you guys gonna do the OVAs? There are about five of them, and they were all dubbed. I don't think they should do the comic theaters (shorts that just have jokes), but the OVAs are full-length episodes that expand on the characters. There's one on the Roy's and Hughes's time during the Ishvalan War, and another on Ed and Al's teacher, Izumi, for example. They should definitely watch these after they finish the last episode.

Hughes was a captain in the war. Was promoted to major sometime in between the end of the war or shortly after. Then promoted again to Lieutenant Colonel. And after he died he was promoted past the rank of Colonel and was given Brigadier General. Be My Little General. Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, General, General of the Armies.
So the ishvalen fell to an order 66? ;-)

The Brennan what? I know that. I didn't talk about the gloves. Bit as long as there is water to transmute AND the gloves aren't wet he has basically infinite fuel. Separates hydrogen and oxygen. Burns it and then separates it again.

Guys.... you're overthinking it. The Greatest alchemy is the flame alchemy. Its OP because little effort and super powerful with only a minor weakness. On top of that it can freaking take out lust without breaking a sweat.

I forget if it was ever said, but I think Riza joined the military *for* Roy. It's clear she didn't do it to participate in the Ishvalan "war", as she was completely against the whole thing. Shows how much love and dedication she has to Roy that she put herself through that to be near him, and essentially watch over him.
Puts a new perspective when you realize it wasn't through duty that she got to know Roy and the two became close and developed feelings, but that it was those feelings that brought them so close together in the military to begin with.
Also "Study my research for Flame Alchemy, which is imprinted on my daughter's bare back."
