I was working in a dementia unit at the hight of “what’s in my bag,” when I had to go through the purse of a resident to remove food that had gone bad. It was fantastic, she had 12 teaspoons, photos of other residents grand children, an entire box of nitroglycerin patches taken from the locked med cart.
@@jessicaclakley3691 Right?!? It amazed me how clever people with quite advanced dementia can be. I worked with the sweetest lady who no longer recognized her children but could still read and problem solve. She used to walk past the fire alarms read “lift here,” aloud to herself and then set them off. She would also figure out the latches to the kitchen door.
This is such a great video! To add to the "gendered" aspect of it, I would also add that women are encouraged to take care of people around them and anticipate every possible situation (thus having tissues, period products, deodorant, gum, etc.). Moreover, whatever would become of us if our lips were dried during the day? If our hair was not perfectly brushed? If an aura of perfume doesn't precede us? We are also encouraged to always look as "put together" as possible. The men I know don't ever care about having the basics of care (such as tissues) when we go out.
i am ftm. i carry a very very very small wallet with me attached to my belt loop. i have used all my feminine experience to shove as many essentials as possible into there. when i used to carry a purse or totebag it would be like mary poppins bag lol. now most people, including women, get surprised when i say i have the hand sanitizer, bandaids, stain wipes, gum, tissues, many other small whatevers when they ask a group of people. im king of handing out extra (brand new) hairties at concerts or the gym. you are 100% right (in my own experience) it was an expectation of me to be prepared when presenting female vs now its used an example of how caring/helpful i am.
Oh my god yes! I'm non-binary, but present very feminine, and I always feel the need to be prepared for every situation because who else is going to be? I think the whole "mum friend" thing definitely plays into this, too, as we feel the need to be ready if someone gets hurt or if someone's phone goes flat, etc (literally carry a portable charger in my tiny school bag constantly and have 3 different types of phone chargers - type C, Micro and lightning - so that I'm able to help ANYONE who needs it. Seriously, my bag is tiny in terms of a schoolbag, barelt fits an a5 sketchbook, and yet I feel he need to carry a box of bandaids, multiple tissue packets, multiple packets of mints, pads and multiple different roll on deodorants (I'm asthmatic, nobody is using spray in mt presence 💀💀) yet most men might have a pack of gum they share with their mates in their massive bags.
I remember that one time some British E-list celebrity did one of these with vogue and she pulled a tiny vibrator out of her bag, the producer said ‘we can’t use that’ off camera and they forgot to edit it out
this video rules!! i’d also argue that men’s “what’s in my bag”s (or lack thereof) are equally gendered. not just what they carry, but what they DON’T carry, says a lot about how they anticipate + understand their own needs (or the potential needs of others around them). so glad i found your channel!
That’s a good point! I postulate that due to the gendered stereotypes of women being care givers contributes. Women anticipate the needs of not just themselves but others around them. I carry peto pills in my bag, not for myself but for my boyfriend. Where as men, are raised to consider only themselves first, they carry keys, phone, wallet, AirPods. So I think that greatly contributes as well.
Yeah I agree, though I suppose these comments speak more towards the men that don't carry bags with them around at all. There are a lot of men that do care about their bags though, as witnessed by the countless "EDC Bag" videos that TH-camrs make that are gendered but for an entirely different reason. I do think saying that the items are only for themselves is a bit reductive, they often bring items like a flashlight, pocket knife, some multitool or a pen. Useful items to be sure (though how much so in day-to-day life is debatable, who needs a knife 24/7? 😄), but maybe in the end they only serve the aesthetic purpose of enhancing their own masculinity. I feel it's just they feel a bit insecure about caring so much about their bag, something seen as very feminine historically, that they just have to add those items. Those items then turn in to this obsessive hobby that only men have, where they have to get all these different sorts of any of the items listed depending on their specific obsession. They have to get the best knife, the brightest flashlight, etc. I suppose it's completely fine to want to express yourself as a man, and it makes sense for a tech youtuber to carry techy things (that is self-expression after all), but those videos end up being very boring, samey and unpersonal as a result. It's the same concept where they couldn't care less about the interior of their house, but then get completely obsessed over perfecting their desk set-up (or "battlestation"), where ultimately that moment of more intimate self expression gets drown out by a technical preoccupation with for example keyboard switches or crazy lighting set-ups. Sorry for my rant, this has been annoying me for a while and I was glad to finally have found a place to vent those frustrations haha
From my experience, guys dont carry much because they know a woman who have it so they would borrow it from her. They would even confess doing as much.
the gender of it all is VERY western. ive lived in japan for the last 4.5 years and masculinity is a bit different…men are definitely still men and the society is definitely patriarchal (don’t even get me started) but men carry bags, not just backpacks or briefcases, i see a lot of totes, messenger bags, and the fan favorite the crossbody bag. ive clearly been here too long cuz when i think about the aversion to carrying bags or needing to add ’man’ in front i think ‘omg just carry the effing bag ffs’
Very true. I’ve been to Tokyo, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, it’s actually quite common too see men, even cis straight men, wearing a designer handbag. Even if it’s technically for “women” Birkin bags and Kelly bags are a favorite of Asian men.
The Philippines do have a lot of males carrying bags, mainly backpacks but messenger bags as well. It’s more common to see that on the working class, rather than upper class. Most people commute, so traffic, distance from work, and weather are factors to need bags.
I’d argue it’s not western but English western culture I’m from Europe and a lot of young men in places like France, Germany and Spain do wear bags especially in the lower to middle class
I believe some of it is gendered, but I also know anxiety plays a role in it for some. I love having a big bag filled with items I know will meet needs, it gives me a sense of peace when stepping out into a world I can’t control. I also have cis male friends who carry bags for this exact same reason.
My bags get smaller, the more stable I am in life. In my 20s there were definitely times I needed a huge purse because I didn't know where I would be staying from night to night. Totally get what Tom was saying. Lol
I have a weird, half-baked neurodivergent take on this topic: as an nd girlie, I have often felt locked out of typical feminized experiences, even the ones I would have wanted to partake in. As a result, I often find myself at odds with the concept of "how to girl" (or, lets be honest, just "how to human" most of the time) and relying on behaviour modeling from others a LOT. I like to watch these nosy kinds of videos (bags tours, room/house tours, vlogs etc.) to give myself a behaviour blueprint. They also serve as an appproximation for real-life experiences and conncections with other girls that I never got to have.
One celebrity “what’s in my bag” video that I really love and think is genuine is Alessia Cara’s. She pulled out a backpack and explained it’s because she travels a lot for her job so she needs more room for her things. And then if I remember correctly, she pulled out a smaller bag from her backpack and said that’s what she carries around for every day. And she pulled out Lexapro so.
My reasons: I have been the one out and about unprepared. From seeing what other people carry I have made it a staple to always carry around a small manicure set with nail clippers and small scissor. I have needed those small scissors MORE TIMES THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE. I also learned about the thin bag friendly “touchland” hand sanitizer from watching other girls. I have also found amazing holy grail products that I didn’t know about prior. Watching “what’s in my bag” videos have given me more ideas to be more organized and prepared in daily life

My first "what's in your bag" experience was in high school in the mid-90s. My creative writing teacher went around the room and asked students about what they carry in their bags every day. The point was that we often carry items that have a story behind them or say something about us, what shapes us, our histories. I was hooked from that day on. I love watching these videos, whether from celebrities or just random people because it's fun to see what people value, what we all have in common, and it gives me ideas on what is useful to have on hand (I like to feel prepared). 😊
Omg I'm obsessed with wimb videos I've watched hundreds. My favourite is this one lady who pulled out a gun as one of her items. Also a lot of women carry meds but I've never seen any carry condoms. I think the guy version is edc (everyday carry) and actually they're very similar to wimb videos in many ways, not so much in what they carry but more in how they value the aesthetics of the bag and items in the bags
As a girl who grew up on tumblr this was a very interesting video. I loved to scroll through the whatsinmybag hashtag and loved to see the little item’s different people would carry as it felt like a little window into different people’s identities . Its almost like a connectivity thing through femininity. Im not good at putting these things into words lol. Looking at photos and videos of people talking about whats in their bag some how feels comforting.
Honestly I think the clear bags are also seeing a rise in campaigning because (in America at least) you can’t go to venues or gathering without one. It’s the most annoying thing ever getting stopped at the gate because my bag is too big to not be seen-through. Fashion meets practicality

Guy here as a bag person due to being disabled, a good bag helps me carry essentials and prepare for inaccesible spaces. Mens whats in my bag are called Everyday Carry or EDC. These are often more untilliarian in nature to womens whats in my bag, often focusing on reducing bulk. A good example is this video My 2 VERY different jobs (and their EDC's) Maurice Moves. This video here My 2023 EDC Travel Essentials Kit Marcus O'Brien is really sweet as he is a dad and he does carry things for his kids. Mens fashion/bags are more toned down in nature so the algorithim doesn't pick it up well compared to womens which are more glam focused [no shade I love both appraoches as they expand your horizons in terms of what styling can be ] I love watching anyform of what is my bag as the right product and bag can change your life. 😊
When I searched EDC recently I got mostly men showing what they carry and what they carry it in. Still a bit of product placement, but mostly about things like multi tools or tech stuff. And carried in pockets, backpacks or sling bags. But a couple of years ago when I searched EDC I got stuff about guns, which was 100% NOT what I wanted to see. So, things are changing!

I love what’s in my bag videos and photos. I will watch what’s in my bag celebrity videos even if I don’t care about the celebrity. I think the videos and photos are so popular because in nature we are all nosy people and bags usually tend to show someone’s personality and likings. Your bag is such a personal thing and although the public can see it, its contents are hidden (unless it’s transparent), which just makes the whole ordeal so enticing. I think bags are also not as popular with men because they do not “need” to carry as many things as women when it’s not for a specific reason (like cameras). women often carry their makeup and toiletries but men aren’t expected to uphold beauty ideals that would make them carry so many things.
The sections about 'men's bags' fit me, a woman, the best! I don't like carrying bags for aesthetic reasons. I have a couple of small purses I'll take to run errands with because I don't want to be bumping into people, but otherwise I take a tote bag or small backpack for more practical gear. I had never payed much attention to what's in my bag content so I learned a lot from this video!

On the note of men not being ecouraged to carry things daily Guy here. I thinks its due to carrying things being seen as "weakness" Carrying essential objects implies that a man is "vulnerable" according to hegemonic masculinity so the less you carry the less "vulnerable" you are. Being disabled a good bag helps me carry essentials and prepare for inaccesible spaces. And general spaces such as a cafe because spaces are desinged as hostile to those with disabilties. You cannot really tell if a space is acessible or not until you get there, so carrying things to help me navigate those spaces such as sanitiser lessens my anxiety. If ever I go through the endevour or going out. I love bags so much as you can carry so much and it can be matched with the tone of what you are wearing making you feel extra powerful.
This is such an interesting video. Especially when you delved deeper into men and handbags. I think straight men from smaller towns or more relaxed and chill places would be less inclined to wear actual handbags and they’d just stick to totes or backpacks. But if you go to major metropolitan cities, especially fashion capitals like Paris or New York or London, it’s quite common to see men with actual handbags… like actual proper “designer” handbags (Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Goyard, Bottega, etc.) Here in Asia, especially in big cities in Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Tokyo, it’s very common to see men carrying Hermes and Chanel bags, even if it’s technically marketed for women. Asians, even men, are known for liking designer items, so designer handbags are common. I think it really depends on which cities and the style and culture we fall into to. Celebrities and trends dictate it too... Ever since Harry Styles and Jacob Elordi started carrying “women’s” tiny purses, more men are trying to copy them.
I think it also goes back to the hunter and gatherer days. Back then, people would cultivate a unique selection of tools to hunt/gather that served multiple purposes. Likewise, purses allow us to see what “tools” people find valuable and help them succeed in this modern day world, propelling others to want the same items so they too can be successful, smart, etc.
i need a backpack with me full of things ( that are not very useful) to feel secure like a few fidget toys a small blanket water colours set and sketch book and a lot more for mental health reasons I need to feel like I have everything with me and I’ll survive if I lose my home…. And seeing people show that they have a lot of useless things in their giant bags make me feel less ashamed about my bag
While I agree that there is a functional aspect to men’s ’bag’ videos, there is a whole genre of ‘edc’ or ‘everyday carry’ videos which are primarily targeted at men. It leans ‘minimalist’ but does show a range. A lot of sling bags there.
Anytime I see a man carrying a bag I compliment him because I want him to know that I’m okay with it no matter his orientation or interest. Jess from Gilmore girls, there’s something to be said about a paperback in his pocket, he would never read a hardback because the message that he’s lower income or more used to lower income is sent by him only reading a cheap reprint of The Outsiders or Jack Kerouac. I’m not certain but I feel like at some point he might’ve come up with a messenger bag. Not sure.
The men's "Everyday Carry/ EDC" videos actually have do masculine status items/momentos. You tend to see items such as really nice watches, pocket knifes, lighters, pens, leather wallets and notebooks.
This is so fascinating for me personally, because I've never seen (or at least never really noticed) these "what's in my bag" videos before. Now, this may be because I strongly dislike bags and I haven't used my satchel since uni so I've just.. kinda filtered it out, but here's where it gets interesting: recently, I've bought a jacket that has just two very shallow pockets. Usually I wouldn't go for something like that, because pockets are a dealbreaker for me, but this one was otherwise perfect, so I decided to keep it. Well, now I need a bag to carry my phone, keys, cards and stuff around, so for the past few days, I've been shopping around for bags - and boom, this video appears on my front page. What I'm wondering is, is this one of those phenomenons where you start noticing things more because they're on your mind, or are the algorithms working overtime? Because I haven't been looking for bags ONLINE.

My dad in his 70s has a man bag. when we were kids in the 80’s it was a big red camera bag but it had sun cream, tissues and all the other stuff kids need. Then he stopped when we grew up. Then a few years ago he kept putting things in my step mums bag so we got him another man bag (black cd bag). he loves it and it’s been great over covid with masks and hand gel and stuff! But yep we do have call it the man bag (not hand bag) 😂
It's so funny the way these terms evolve. I use Shopee, the biggest e-commerce in southeast Asia and when I was searching for "hand bag" it returns listings of men's clutches because people have been referring these as handbags thinking "oh it's a bag you hold in your hand" rather than the women's handbag which is more like a tote with short handles (which also show up but not nearly as much)
I recently migrated my "essentials" (phone, walet, car & house keys) to a perfectly sized clutch though it took forever to find one to fit my phone, that lives in my bigger bag. I dont need as big a bag as i did when i was a teen and carried books since i now cary my kindle everywhere, but the Kavu bags are perfect for me since i carry al sorts of work and "just in case" items like a power bank and mini firstaid kit. I have whittled down my "everyday carry" items over the years but my bf still thinks im silly when i carry my "big" purse into places even if i probably wont need any of the items in it, but you never know when an unexpected ocation for them may arrise!

I didnt kno whats in my bags existed that long ago, im only familiar with the GQ version thats on youtube so definitely more curated. Reminds me of "photo dumps" back in the day (2016-2019) they were genuinely random, i only knew a few ppl who expressed themselves that way. Now everyones doing a quirky random photo dump thats so intensely curated to seem nonchalant 😩 i just hate how human expression on social media is just more & more curated as everyone is overthinking, wanting to be a brand, or just scared to be themselves. I have carried a bag or purse for as long as I can remember. For me it’s so I can always have my essentials on hand or of anyone else needs anything. I don’t believe a lot of “what’s in my bag” videos are real, because there would be so much more trash 😅 But it’s the part of my who loves to snoop and be nosey.

But as a Gen Z lady myself I have found my(and the internet’s interest) vary over the years: • 2012-2018 Bedroom tour • 2015-2018 What’s in my smartphone (usually IPhone) • 2015-2019 What I pack (now that I write it until COVID-19 and people couldn’t travel as often in 2020/2021) • 2016-2018 Beauty room tour • 2015-2017 House tour • 2013-2018 Closet tour • 2017-Now What’s in my pantry/What’s in my fridge • 2017-Now What’s in my bag (bag/purse tour) --- I discovered that it was actually popular in 2006-2013 , often in blogs just like what you mentioned and in magazines in 1960~ More or less, with ups and downs of course. My favourite varied just like the trends, personally my favourite are the Bedroom tours and WIMB. Because it tells a lot about the person and how they think. I prefer early 2000s until 2013 WIMB even though I consume the Gen Z ones more, because they were actually functional without withholding the person’s aesthetic. Nowadays they have little no nothing, at least some tissue? By the way, something that I do not like is that everything that isn’t “quirky” or “dehorganized” is unrealistic. Maybe it’s just me because I find the first one unrealistic, to have a big massage machine (a Korean celebrity and was praised for her quirkiness) and a ton of snack bags (maybe it’s my culture? Everyone seems to snack all the day) and many toys and trinkets that take space for tissues, sanitizers, hand cream… at the same time, I don’t see why I would bring most makeup items other than lip cosmetics. I see that it’s different for everyone, for what matters Kylie J might be unrealistic with all that makeup but I can’t say that I haven’t forgotten an expensive (not really but it is real gold so) bracelet in my purse because I was tired and changed to go to sleep right after visiting someone.
Great video! I loved the deep dive. My personal obsession with WIMBs stems from this old cd-rom game from the 90s where you got to snoop through kids lockers, backpacks, read their notes and diaries to get clues to the game story and I LOVED that function of the gameplay. What’s in My Bag videos scratch that same itch in my brain.
Adding onto the WIMB videos being product placements, other examples I see of this are K-Pop idols' WIMB videos (I usually watch the Vogue Korea ones). I do believe that the earlier videos of theirs were more genuine, but their newer ones feature idols that are brand ambassadors for certain designer brands and all the contents of their bag are from that one (or maybe two or three) designer brand/s. While I still do enjoy watching these idol WIMBs, seeing that pattern of product placement takes some of the joy out of it :')
i remember doing flatlays as far back as my livejournal days. something about contents organized neatly makes my brain go burrrrrr. as a disabled person, i've always used my bag as a lifeline.
I hate videos that give nothing but constant product placements or sponsorships.... this trend really Is something I always saw as just mild entertainment. As for the general purpose of a handbag, I see it as an element for styling up or down an outfit, but in previous years of my life, I always saw handbags as prized possessions to be collected. Luxury handbags especially could easily be seen as status symbols or works of art if they're bought with care, construction and design in mind as well as quality. Finding a way to keep a healthy balance of those two different mindsets is the new goal I have because in my opinion at least, the way you dress gives a lasting first impression.
I carry around alotttt in my bag, like cough drops, tissues, lotion, gum, lip stuff .. etc and I love when someone asks me for something and I’m like “yep I have that!” Also I have kids so … snacks

Originally originating to showing what gun do men carry every day, evolved into seeing what other items do men carry in their pockets, and eventually other people. I find it very interesting!
My mom has always been a bag girlie so my newly found love for bags has been influenced by her and one aunt who once said "a woman who's prepared is worth 1000" while she rummaged through stuff for a bandaid. While I do love cute bags I just love when people have actually functional and worn bags.

I haven’t even started the video but the comments are so true! I carry more stuff for other people in my tiny purse that barely fits my phone in it than my husband has in his entire backpack. I’m gonna go bully him into becoming a bag girlie 😂 (not in a mean way obviously but this double standard has to stop, and I think it’s better that men become more considerate instead of women becoming less considerate.) In summer, almost exclusively wear cargo shorts because like 85% of the time theme parks are fine with that (but sometimes they will still force you to pay for a locker), and in winter I do like my heavy winter coat for stuff like that. It’s just those 55-75F (15-22 C) range that can be weird. Carrying a bag just isn’t convenient for a day trip type thing, but when I would go somewhere for a weekend during my semester abroad, I had a huge backpack I could throw almost everything I needed outside of pocket items (phone, earbuds, wallet). European theme parks are different than parks in the states, so going straight to Tibidabo from Barcelona-Sants with my backpack would be more acceptable since I can just leave it to the side at each ride, no questions asked. That’s more so a shift based on an outside factor and most female/fem-leaning enthusiasts also follow that too. Those I follow and talk to do not come off as traditionally feminine, regardless of sexuality-which is also a factor
I like them because I like to see products and small accessories. I am also not sure about the high-low end theory. 90% of my lipsticks and makeup compacts are Chanel and I’ve been buying them since at least 2006 but I also love those 5 dollar elf cream blushes and I carry them side by side. Part of it may be they get sent absolutely everything. It also depends on the celebrity. I don’t trust the Kardashians and those types. Everything with them is fake.

I guess i thought that the answer to why those women were successful and beautiful was inside those said bags. I was working in a dementia unit at the hight of “what’s in my bag,” when I had to go through the purse of a resident to remove food that had gone bad. It was fantastic, she had 12 teaspoons, photos of other residents grand children, an entire box of nitroglycerin patches taken from the locked med cart.

I worked with the sweetest lady who no longer recognized her children but could still read and problem solve. She used to walk past the fire alarms read “lift here,” aloud to herself and then set them off. She would also figure out the latches to the kitchen door.
This is such a great video! To add to the "gendered" aspect of it, I would also add that women are encouraged to take care of people around them and anticipate every possible situation (thus having tissues, period products, deodorant, gum, etc.). Moreover, whatever would become of us if our lips were dried during the day? If our hair was not perfectly brushed? If an aura of perfume doesn't precede us? We are also encouraged to always look as "put together" as possible. The men I know don't ever care about having the basics of care (such as tissues) when we go out.

i am ftm. i carry a very very very small wallet with me attached to my belt loop. i have used all my feminine experience to shove as many essentials as possible into there. when i used to carry a purse or totebag it would be like mary poppins bag lol. now most people, including women, get surprised when i say i have the hand sanitizer, bandaids, stain wipes, gum, tissues, many other small whatevers when they ask a group of people. im king of handing out extra (brand new) hairties at concerts or the gym. you are 100% right (in my own experience) it was an expectation of me to be prepared when presenting female vs now its used an example of how caring/helpful i am.
Oh my god yes! I'm non-binary, but present very feminine, and I always feel the need to be prepared for every situation because who else is going to be? I think the whole "mum friend" thing definitely plays into this, too, as we feel the need to be ready if someone gets hurt or if someone's phone goes flat, etc (literally carry a portable charger in my tiny school bag constantly and have 3 different types of phone chargers - type C, Micro and lightning - so that I'm able to help ANYONE who needs it.
Seriously, my bag is tiny in terms of a schoolbag, barelt fits an a5 sketchbook, and yet I feel he need to carry a box of bandaids, multiple tissue packets, multiple packets of mints, pads and multiple different roll on deodorants (I'm asthmatic, nobody is using spray in mt presence 💀💀) yet most men might have a pack of gum they share with their mates in their massive bags.
I remember that one time some British E-list celebrity did one of these with vogue and she pulled a tiny vibrator out of her bag, the producer said ‘we can’t use that’ off camera and they forgot to edit it out

this video rules!! i’d also argue that men’s “what’s in my bag”s (or lack thereof) are equally gendered. not just what they carry, but what they DON’T carry, says a lot about how they anticipate + understand their own needs (or the potential needs of others around them). so glad i found your channel!
That’s a good point! I postulate that due to the gendered stereotypes of women being care givers contributes. Women anticipate the needs of not just themselves but others around them. I carry peto pills in my bag, not for myself but for my boyfriend. Where as men, are raised to consider only themselves first, they carry keys, phone, wallet, AirPods. So I think that greatly contributes as well.
Yeah I agree, though I suppose these comments speak more towards the men that don't carry bags with them around at all. There are a lot of men that do care about their bags though, as witnessed by the countless "EDC Bag" videos that TH-camrs make that are gendered but for an entirely different reason.
I do think saying that the items are only for themselves is a bit reductive, they often bring items like a flashlight, pocket knife, some multitool or a pen. Useful items to be sure (though how much so in day-to-day life is debatable, who needs a knife 24/7? 😄), but maybe in the end they only serve the aesthetic purpose of enhancing their own masculinity. I feel it's just they feel a bit insecure about caring so much about their bag, something seen as very feminine historically, that they just have to add those items.
Those items then turn in to this obsessive hobby that only men have, where they have to get all these different sorts of any of the items listed depending on their specific obsession. They have to get the best knife, the brightest flashlight, etc. I suppose it's completely fine to want to express yourself as a man, and it makes sense for a tech youtuber to carry techy things (that is self-expression after all), but those videos end up being very boring, samey and unpersonal as a result.
It's the same concept where they couldn't care less about the interior of their house, but then get completely obsessed over perfecting their desk set-up (or "battlestation"), where ultimately that moment of more intimate self expression gets drown out by a technical preoccupation with for example keyboard switches or crazy lighting set-ups.
Sorry for my rant, this has been annoying me for a while and I was glad to finally have found a place to vent those frustrations haha

the gender of it all is VERY western. ive lived in japan for the last 4.5 years and masculinity is a bit different…men are definitely still men and the society is definitely patriarchal (don’t even get me started) but men carry bags, not just backpacks or briefcases, i see a lot of totes, messenger bags, and the fan favorite the crossbody bag.

The Philippines do have a lot of males carrying bags, mainly backpacks but messenger bags as well. It’s more common to see that on the working class, rather than upper class. Most people commute, so traffic, distance from work, and weather are factors to need bags.
I’d argue it’s not western but English western culture I’m from Europe and a lot of young men in places like France, Germany and Spain do wear bags especially in the lower to middle class

I believe some of it is gendered, but I also know anxiety plays a role in it for some. I love having a big bag filled with items I know will meet needs, it gives me a sense of peace when stepping out into a world I can’t control. I also have cis male friends who carry bags for this exact same reason.

I have a weird, half-baked neurodivergent take on this topic: as an nd girlie, I have often felt locked out of typical feminized experiences, even the ones I would have wanted to partake in. As a result, I often find myself at odds with the concept of "how to girl" (or, lets be honest, just "how to human" most of the time) and relying on behaviour modeling from others a LOT. I like to watch these nosy kinds of videos (bags tours, room/house tours, vlogs etc.) to give myself a behaviour blueprint. They also serve as an appproximation for real-life experiences and conncections with other girls that I never got to have.

One celebrity “what’s in my bag” video that I really love and think is genuine is Alessia Cara’s. She pulled out a backpack and explained it’s because she travels a lot for her job so she needs more room for her things. And then if I remember correctly, she pulled out a smaller bag from her backpack and said that’s what she carries around for every day. And she pulled out Lexapro so.

My reasons: I have been the one out and about unprepared. From seeing what other people carry I have made it a staple to always carry around a small manicure set with nail clippers and small scissor. I have needed those small scissors MORE TIMES THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE. I also learned about the thin bag friendly “touchland” hand sanitizer from watching other girls. I have also found amazing holy grail products that I didn’t know about prior. Watching “what’s in my bag” videos have given me more ideas to be more organized and prepared in daily life

My first "what's in your bag" experience was in high school in the mid-90s. My creative writing teacher went around the room and asked students about what they carry in their bags every day. The point was that we often carry items that have a story behind them or say something about us, what shapes us, our histories. I was hooked from that day on. I love watching these videos, whether from celebrities or just random people because it's fun to see what people value, what we all have in common, and it gives me ideas on what is useful to have on hand (I like to feel prepared). 😊
Omg I'm obsessed with wimb videos I've watched hundreds. My favourite is this one lady who pulled out a gun as one of her items. Also a lot of women carry meds but I've never seen any carry condoms. I think the guy version is edc (everyday carry) and actually they're very similar to wimb videos in many ways, not so much in what they carry but more in how they value the aesthetics of the bag and items in the bags
As a girl who grew up on tumblr this was a very interesting video. I loved to scroll through the whatsinmybag hashtag and loved to see the little item’s different people would carry as it felt like a little window into different people’s identities . Its almost like a connectivity thing through femininity. Im not good at putting these things into words lol. Looking at photos and videos of people talking about whats in their bag some how feels comforting.

Honestly I think the clear bags are also seeing a rise in campaigning because (in America at least) you can’t go to venues or gathering without one. It’s the most annoying thing ever getting stopped at the gate because my bag is too big to not be seen-through. Fashion meets practicality

Guy here as a bag person due to being disabled, a good bag helps me carry essentials and prepare for inaccesible spaces. Mens whats in my bag are called Everyday Carry or EDC. These are often more untilliarian in nature to womens whats in my bag, often focusing on reducing bulk. A good example is this video My 2 VERY different jobs (and their EDC's) Maurice Moves. This video here My 2023 EDC Travel Essentials Kit Marcus O'Brien is really sweet as he is a dad and he does carry things for his kids. Mens fashion/bags are more toned down in nature so the algorithim doesn't pick it up well compared to womens which are more glam focused [no shade I love both appraoches as they expand your horizons in terms of what styling can be ]

When I searched EDC recently I got mostly men showing what they carry and what they carry it in. Still a bit of product placement, but mostly about things like multi tools or tech stuff. And carried in pockets, backpacks or sling bags. But a couple of years ago when I searched EDC I got stuff about guns, which was 100% NOT what I wanted to see. So, things are changing!

I think the videos and photos are so popular because in nature we are all nosy people and bags usually tend to show someone’s personality and likings. Your bag is such a personal thing and although the public can see it, its contents are hidden (unless it’s transparent), which just makes the whole ordeal so enticing.
I think bags are also not as popular with men because they do not “need” to carry as many things as women when it’s not for a specific reason (like cameras). women often carry their makeup and toiletries but men aren’t expected to uphold beauty ideals that would make them carry so many things.
The sections about 'men's bags' fit me, a woman, the best! I don't like carrying bags for aesthetic reasons. I have a couple of small purses I'll take to run errands with because I don't want to be bumping into people, but otherwise I take a tote bag or small backpack for more practical gear. I had never payed much attention to what's in my bag content so I learned a lot from this video!

On the note of men not being ecouraged to carry things daily Guy here. I thinks its due to carrying things being seen as "weakness" Carrying essential objects implies that a man is "vulnerable" according to hegemonic masculinity so the less you carry the less "vulnerable" you are. Being disabled a good bag helps me carry essentials and prepare for inaccesible spaces. And general spaces such as a cafe because spaces are desinged as hostile to those with disabilties. You cannot really tell if a space is acessible or not until you get there, so carrying things to help me navigate those spaces such as sanitiser lessens my anxiety. If ever I go through the endevour or going out.
I love bags so much as you can carry so much and it can be matched with the tone of what you are wearing making you feel extra powerful.

I think straight men from smaller towns or more relaxed and chill places would be less inclined to wear actual handbags and they’d just stick to totes or backpacks.
But if you go to major metropolitan cities, especially fashion capitals like Paris or New York or London, it’s quite common to see men with actual handbags… like actual proper “designer” handbags (Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Goyard, Bottega, etc.)
Here in Asia, especially in big cities in Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Tokyo, it’s very common to see men carrying Hermes and Chanel bags, even if it’s technically marketed for women. Asians, even men, are known for liking designer items, so designer handbags are common.
I think it really depends on which cities and the style and culture we fall into to.
Celebrities and trends dictate it too... Ever since Harry Styles and Jacob Elordi started carrying “women’s” tiny purses, more men are trying to copy them.

I think it also goes back to the hunter and gatherer days. Back then, people would cultivate a unique selection of tools to hunt/gather that served multiple purposes. Likewise, purses allow us to see what “tools” people find valuable and help them succeed in this modern day world, propelling others to want the same items so they too can be successful, smart, etc.

While I agree that there is a functional aspect to men’s ’bag’ videos, there is a whole genre of ‘edc’ or ‘everyday carry’ videos which are primarily targeted at men. It leans ‘minimalist’ but does show a range. A lot of sling bags there.
Anytime I see a man carrying a bag I compliment him because I want him to know that I’m okay with it no matter his orientation or interest.
Jess from Gilmore girls, there’s something to be said about a paperback in his pocket, he would never read a hardback because the message that he’s lower income or more used to lower income is sent by him only reading a cheap reprint of The Outsiders or Jack Kerouac. I’m not certain but I feel like at some point he might’ve come up with a messenger bag. Not sure.

This is so fascinating for me personally, because I've never seen (or at least never really noticed) these "what's in my bag" videos before. Now, this may be because I strongly dislike bags and I haven't used my satchel since uni so I've just.. kinda filtered it out, but here's where it gets interesting: recently, I've bought a jacket that has just two very shallow pockets. Usually I wouldn't go for something like that, because pockets are a dealbreaker for me, but this one was otherwise perfect, so I decided to keep it. Well, now I need a bag to carry my phone, keys, cards and stuff around, so for the past few days, I've been shopping around for bags - and boom, this video appears on my front page. What I'm wondering is, is this one of those phenomenons where you start noticing things more because they're on your mind, or are the algorithms working overtime? Because I haven't been looking for bags ONLINE.
Recently moved to Eastern Europe and immediately I noticed that men here do wear smaller satchels or bags especially older men… they don’t just rely on their pockets

My dad in his 70s has a man bag. when we were kids in the 80’s it was a big red camera bag but it had sun cream, tissues and all the other stuff kids need. Then he stopped when we grew up. Then a few years ago he kept putting things in my step mums bag so we got him another man bag (black cd bag). he loves it and it’s been great over covid with masks and hand gel and stuff! But yep we do have call it the man bag (not hand bag) 😂
It's so funny the way these terms evolve. I use Shopee, the biggest e-commerce in southeast Asia and when I was searching for "hand bag" it returns listings of men's clutches because people have been referring these as handbags thinking "oh it's a bag you hold in your hand" rather than the women's handbag which is more like a tote with short handles (which also show up but not nearly as much)
I recently migrated my "essentials" (phone, walet, car & house keys) to a perfectly sized clutch though it took forever to find one to fit my phone, that lives in my bigger bag. I dont need as big a bag as i did when i was a teen and carried books since i now cary my kindle everywhere, but the Kavu bags are perfect for me since i carry al sorts of work and "just in case" items like a power bank and mini firstaid kit. I have whittled down my "everyday carry" items over the years but my bf still thinks im silly when i carry my "big" purse into places even if i probably wont need any of the items in it, but you never know when an unexpected ocation for them may arrise!

I didnt kno whats in my bags existed that long ago, im only familiar with the GQ version thats on youtube so definitely more curated. Reminds me of "photo dumps" back in the day (2016-2019) they were genuinely random, i only knew a few ppl who expressed themselves that way. Now everyones doing a quirky random photo dump thats so intensely curated to seem nonchalant 😩 i just hate how human expression on social media is just more & more curated as everyone is overthinking, wanting to be a brand, or just scared to be themselves. I have carried a bag or purse for as long as I can remember. For me it’s so I can always have my essentials on hand or of anyone else needs anything. I don’t believe a lot of “what’s in my bag” videos are real, because there would be so much more trash 😅
But it’s the part of my who loves to snoop and be nosey.

But as a Gen Z lady myself I have found my(and the internet’s interest) vary over the years:

• 2015-2018 What’s in my smartphone (usually IPhone)
• 2015-2019 What I pack (now that I write it until COVID-19 and people couldn’t travel as often in 2020/2021)
• 2016-2018 Beauty room tour
• 2015-2017 House tour
• 2013-2018 Closet tour
• 2017-Now What’s in my pantry/What’s in my fridge
• 2017-Now What’s in my bag (bag/purse tour) --- I discovered that it was actually popular in 2006-2013 , often in blogs just like what you mentioned and in magazines in 1960~

My favourite varied just like the trends, personally my favourite are the Bedroom tours and WIMB. Because it tells a lot about the person and how they think. I prefer early 2000s until 2013 WIMB even though I consume the Gen Z ones more, because they were actually functional without withholding the person’s aesthetic. Nowadays they have little no nothing, at least some tissue?
By the way, something that I do not like is that everything that isn’t “quirky” or “dehorganized” is unrealistic. Maybe it’s just me because I find the first one unrealistic, to have a big massage machine (a Korean celebrity and was praised for her quirkiness) and a ton of snack bags (maybe it’s my culture? Everyone seems to snack all the day) and many toys and trinkets that take space for tissues, sanitizers, hand cream… at the same time, I don’t see why I would bring most makeup items other than lip cosmetics.
I see that it’s different for everyone, for what matters Kylie J might be unrealistic with all that makeup but I can’t say that I haven’t forgotten an expensive (not really but it is real gold so) bracelet in my purse because I was tired and changed to go to sleep right after visiting someone.

My personal obsession with WIMBs stems from this old cd-rom game from the 90s where you got to snoop through kids lockers, backpacks, read their notes and diaries to get clues to the game story and I LOVED that function of the gameplay. What’s in My Bag videos scratch that same itch in my brain.
Adding onto the WIMB videos being product placements, other examples I see of this are K-Pop idols' WIMB videos (I usually watch the Vogue Korea ones).
I do believe that the earlier videos of theirs were more genuine, but their newer ones feature idols that are brand ambassadors for certain designer brands and all the contents of their bag are from that one (or maybe two or three) designer brand/s.
While I still do enjoy watching these idol WIMBs, seeing that pattern of product placement takes some of the joy out of it :')

Is something I always saw as just mild entertainment. As for the general purpose of a handbag, I see it as an element for styling up or down an outfit, but in previous years of my life, I always saw handbags as prized possessions to be collected. Luxury handbags especially could easily be seen as status symbols or works of art if they're bought with care, construction and design in mind as well as quality. In addition to cis men’s version of “what’s in my bag”, there’s the subreddit /r/EDC - every day carry. Originally originating to showing what gun do men carry every day, evolved into seeing what other items do men carry in their pockets, and eventually other people. I find it very interesting!
My mom has always been a bag girlie so my newly found love for bags has been influenced by her and one aunt who once said "a woman who's prepared is worth 1000" while she rummaged through stuff for a bandaid. While I do love cute bags I just love when people have actually functional and worn bags.
I’m so happy someone made a video of this 😂 I LOVE what’s in my bag videos/IG posts etc and I always wondered why I loved them! I often look for product recs or like new stuff that I’ve never seen before, I don’t watch celeb ones just cause Ik I won’t be able to afford half of that stuff. I haven’t even started the video but the comments are so true! I carry more stuff for other people in my tiny purse that barely fits my phone in it than my husband has in his entire backpack. I’m gonna go bully him into becoming a bag girlie 😂 (not in a mean way obviously but this double standard has to stop, and I think it’s better that men become more considerate instead of women becoming less considerate.) I literally have screwdrivers in my bag because sometimes people need them. The one time I took them out my mum asked if I had a screwdriver 😭

In summer, almost exclusively wear cargo shorts because like 85% of the time theme parks are fine with that (but sometimes they will still force you to pay for a locker), and in winter I do like my heavy winter coat for stuff like that. It’s just those 55-75F (15-22 C) range that can be weird. Carrying a bag just isn’t convenient for a day trip type thing, but when I would go somewhere for a weekend during my semester abroad, I had a huge backpack I could throw almost everything I needed outside of pocket items (phone, earbuds, wallet). European theme parks are different than parks in the states, so going straight to Tibidabo from Barcelona-Sants with my backpack would be more acceptable since I can just leave it to the side at each ride, no questions asked. That’s more so a shift based on an outside factor and most female/fem-leaning enthusiasts also follow that too. Those I follow and talk to do not come off as traditionally feminine, regardless of sexuality-which is also a factor
I like them because I like to see products and small accessories. I am also not sure about the high-low end theory. 90% of my lipsticks and makeup compacts are Chanel and I’ve been buying them since at least 2006 but I also love those 5 dollar elf cream blushes and I carry them side by side. Part of it may be they get sent absolutely everything. It also depends on the celebrity. I don’t trust the Kardashians and those types. Everything with them is fake.

I guess i thought that the answer to why those women were successful and beautiful was inside those said bags. Then i realised that was just capitalism doing their capitalism thing and everything was just a giant ad.

I do think that picking a sustainable brand is a nice way to remind the viewer that it is possible to consume in a conscious way. we love to see it!
