    Great review, always wanted a GWH P-40 (Hawk 81) and thanks to this review, I ordered one!

    Hi Chris! Hope that you’re well, mate? I’ve just ordered the next GWH P40B, the Pearl Harbour kit and it’s had to come from China! Price comparable to what you paid £95 / Aus$185. However, if you’re a P40B FanBoy and if you want the best kit out there in 1/32, well, your cloth is already cut, isn’t it? 😜😂😂
    You gave that a good thorough review! At least I know that I’ve not wasted my money on this one and I’m really looking forward to seeing my Posty, struggling up the drive with it...😂😂😂 I might invest in some Brass 30Cal barrels.....I do like them but I’ll wait and see what the kit has to say for itself first! The only other “extras” will be some after market decals....yes, North Africa here we come! “Killer” Caudwell immediately springs to mind (you mentioned him yourself) but there are others as well and I’m not really into the old Sharks Mouth going on.....disturbs my Cup of Tea, Old Boy....😂😂😂....So I’ll be casting about for a bit....👍🏻👍🏻
    Completely “left field” but I’ve managed to get the complete Zoukei Mura Ho229 sets (1/32, 1/48 and 1/72+1/144).....too good to miss out on, I’m afraid....my Bank Manager tells me that I’m “winging it”, if only he knew....😂😂😂
    Right, I let you buzz off and play with Kanga but no waltzing mind....🤪😂😂 The “six O’clock swallow” will be ice cold cider....beat that if you can! 😂😂😂 ❤️ from Pom Land mate! 👍🏻👍🏻

    Great review of an amazing kit, thanks so much, can't wait to see it built, painted and weathered! And I agree that GWH are producing some of the best models out there now, let's hope they follow up with more 1/32 subjects.
    Did anybody notice how the Republic of China markings (white star on blue circle) on the box art are completely blurred? Luckily not on the same picture on the instructions and not on the decals themselves! These are after all, almost the same markings of today's Taiwan AF, and even during WW2, these markings were of one side only of the Chinese civil war (not the side that won, obviously) and GWH is a Chinese company, so.... 😄

    • @beckersmodels
      @beckersmodels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Manos. I didn't notice that about the Taiwanese markings but that does make sense/nonsense for PC reasons!
      I'm hoping they follow this kit up with a degraded version with less options for a lot less cost that is more likely to be bought and built by more modellers...cheers Chris

      @@beckersmodels Agreed, yes, the price is a bit crazy and not everybody needs all the extra goodies. I just hope the the very high price of this kit will not lead to very low sales, causing GWH to put less effort on a new 1/32 line of kits. Also I think they chose well for their first 1/32 kit (apart from the, ehem, political aspect of Taiwan etc.), as the P-40 and the Flying Tigers are popular subjects but not so mainstream as all the Mustangs and Spitfires and Me-109s etc. out there, Also the Hasegawa kit is showing its age now (and not very easy to find), so I think it was a good move by GWH, market-wise. Let's see what's next. 🙂

    • @beckersmodels

    sheeeiiit, we modelers are spoilt for choice this year, with this and the soon to be released Kotare Spitfire these seem like must haves! P-40's are still derpy looking to me, but I'd do this kit - looks very, very nice indeed

    • @beckersmodels
      @beckersmodels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely Nazid - it almost makes no sense to keep hold of the older kits, if only for nostalgia purposes. And yes the P-40 is not the most attractive aircraft, the -B version with the smaller nose the "sleekest" of the most. I'm itching to start this, but need to finish my Trumpeter Mig-29 ASAP. I've been keeping that under wraps of course....cheers mate

    This is not a Tamiya kit, it is way superior to anything Tamiya ever produced. Especially the extras, the quality of the building instructions, masks, decals, 3D printed parts, photoetch, level of detail of the model itself. Tamiya has never produced anything close to this. For example their Mustang in the same scale is of very questionable quality and far far inferior to this despite costing roughly the same. This is expensive kit sure, but unlike Tamiya it delivers a lot for that money.

    • @beckersmodels
      @beckersmodels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think thats quite harsh, having built that Mustang. The surface detail and engineering are on a par, but you are right about the extras, although the super thin engine cowls and the magnets in the Tamiya kits are a great offering too. The Tamiya Spitfires are superlative, as is the Corsair. GWH definitely have stepped up here in my estimation, so it will be interesting to see what they bring next. Cheers, Chris

    • @dusanbolek8004
      @dusanbolek8004 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@beckersmodels I am not saying that Tamiya Mustang in 1/32 is bad kit per se, it's just for its super high price tag it should have been way better. We are talking about kit that costs 170 USD and for that price it should have been perfect, which it isn't. It's like with cars, If I am judging 100.000 USD Mercedes I will be harsher then with 20.000 USD Mazda, because for top price, I expect top product. The level of detail is inconsistent, you get pretty nice cockpit sure, but engine could have been made more detailed. Yes, I can improve it with my own wiring, but again for 170 USD I don't want to do my own wiring on the kit. And then there are the undercarriage bays which are just awful. There are pretty bad injection marks on them, which are difficult to clear without damaging the surrounding detail and these bays are also less detailed than those on some Eduard kits in 1/48 scale. They just have unacceptable quality and level of detail for 1/32 kit with such high price mark. And then for the money they buyer will get pretty much zero extras and on top of it traditionally terrible Tamiya decals. Also speaking about the surface detail, it looks nice, but it is not historically accurate. For example there are sure very nice rivets on the wings of the kit, unfortunately Mustangs were well know for not having rivets on the wings, because those were filled before painting to achieve perfectly smooth surface. Tamiya probably used as a blueprint for the model some museum example, but those were usually repainted without adhering to the original WWII finish standards.
      So yes Tamiya Mustang is still way better than for example 1/32s WWII warbirds from Trumpeter, but Trumpeters retail for less than 70 USD.

    My only gripe with this kit is that you can't fit the engine and remove the engine cowling panels from around it, like you can with the Tamiya Spitfire and the superb Mosquito. It's either / or.

    • @beckersmodels
      @beckersmodels  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I dont mind so much as I dont like displaying a wheels down aircraft with engine panels exposed. I will build mine with the engine on a separate display stand - I have plenty of 1/32 engines that I have no intention on placing inside the aircraft, but will make them into little models on stands...

    G'day Chris , liked your review on the P40 if your ever interested in something a lot more complicated try the P 51 from Zoukei- Mura selling for around $ 142 .00 , mate you even have to build pistons & cylinder block on this one a full frame & so on , it's like building the actual thing itself any how keep up the good work .

    UPDATED
    Where are the subsequent instalments of your build, please? As a boy in highschool had I read Col. Robert L. Scott's God is My Co-pilot, who became the executive officer to General Claire Chennault of the Flying Tigers. This one just cries out to be "Old Exterminator"!
    Would you know what other warplane Col. Scott flew into the theatre of combat round this time? When he had been endeavouring to go the action was (his superiors on the training base had insisted upon keeping him stateside), he had finagled his way into the cockpit of a Boeing B-17 (likely an -E variant) Flying Fortress USAAF Heavy Bomber bound for southeast Asia. You might be able to make a replica of this plane, too; one would have to back-date a B-17G kit.
    We both agree that plane models belong in the air. In addition to solitary displays, I envision what I call airborne forced perspective dioramas; for example, a daylight bombing raid of B-17s penetrating deep into Nazi Germany. This presentation would comprise one each of a 1:32nd-scale and a 1:48th- scale kit (an -F, or possibly, an -E), a couple in 1:72nd-scale, one sharply dropping a wing as an engine is engulfed in glaring red and orange flames and sooty-black smoke; a few more in 1:144th scale, and several in 1:200th scale.
    Then the aerial sharks of the Luftwaffe arrive . . . .
    I can see exceptions where one can have one on the ground. Most would have it undergoing post-mission servicing. I might set beside Hasegawa's 1:25th-scale model of the Willys Overland M38 Jeep 1/4-ton GP light utility truck a 1:24th-scale model of the North American Aviation P-51D Mustang USAAF Fighter.
    I also would like to find one of those ordinary passenger cars round 1940 painted olive drab that I occasionally would see on military bases and before government office buildings. I have been unable to 1) identify them, and 2) determine if a model maker offers a kit of it.
    Which reminds me: I take from your manner of speech that you are Australian. I very much would like to learn more about U.S. military equipment--aircraft, ships, etc.--in RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) or RAN (Royal Australian Navy?) camouflage and markings.
    My focus would be on the Second World War, though more recent aircraft--the General Dynamics FB-111 Aardvark Fighter Bomber, the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet Strike Fighter, etc.-- might merit recognition.
    The best way for modellers to do that would be to represent them in polystyrene and paint.

Myself i love Zoukei-mura I like to go overboard with the aftermarket parts and PE parts. I not saying Tamiya don't have any good kits they are getting better much better. Great wall hobby does have some good airplanes and other kits I have a bunch of great wall and they have some good figures. But I think they are much better than Tamiya kits. Just me

    • @beckersmodels

      Depends what Tamiya kits - all their 1/32 prop aircraft are superlative in terms of detail, fit and engineering - and superior to ZM in that regard. Their newer 1/48 aircraft releases are also almost as good. There's a huge range of Tamiya kits, unless you've built them all (and I almost have!) from their 40 year plus catalog, and appreciate that some of the older stuff is obviously not as good as newer ZM/GWH releases...cheers Chris

    P-40 certainly has great history with RAAF both in North Africa and the Pacific. The reason they loved the P-40's was firstly the maintenance issues in unfriendly climates like desert and jungle the P-40 was easier to maintain where the Spitfires and Mustangs needed a lot of tender care. Secondly P-40 not only could could dish out a lot of punishment, the aircraft was very tough and pilots could fly them back after getting a bit of touch up. Also one of the few aircraft that fought, the Luftwaffe, the Italians and the Japanese. The later P-40's M & N models had better high altitude performance was improved to be good all round fighter. The later P-40's had a longer tail.

As I got further into the build, I had to let my aviator friend and fellow modeller know that I could find no weakness with this kit. I consider myself novice, however, I have built my fair share of kits that required filler, sanding and scribing. There was none of that here. The only thing I added to the kit was some face screen ejection seat loops. I never would have thought to do that on a 1/72 scale jet but given the level of detail in the cockpit I thought it was appropriate. Because it went together without any issues I recall turning out the finished product relatively faster than other builds of this scale. Cheers, Mike

      I agree Jim, its quite expensive - same quality as a Tamiya Zero/P51/Spit etc, but similar price too - they are all $200AUD or so now here in Australia....cheers, Chris
