I love the fireworks example as Las Vegas casinos put displays on constantly, for free.
Even back in Chicago all the displays were privately funded. Chicago even has the world's only free zoo that is something like 90% privately funded - they only receive a grant from the city because it's in their contract, not because they need it to stay in operation.
