Season 2, Episode 7 "Mr. Monk and the Sleeping Suspect": Monk is convinced he knows who is behind a recent string of mail bombs that have been exploding around San Francisco. The only problem is his primary suspect is in a coma.

Monk Synopsis: Adrian Monk (Emmy®-winner Tony Shalhoub) was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional means to solve the department's most baffling cases. But after the tragic and still-unsolved murder of his wife, Trudy, the devastated Monk becomes obsessive-compulsive. His psychological disorder has caused him to develop an abnormal fear of virtually everything: germs, heights, crowds... even milk. Monk's condition costs him his job, but he's back as a police consultant despite the unique challenges he encounters in his everyday life. These challenges lead Monk to hire a personal nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), who is always there to offer her assistance, even with the simplest of tasks (like organizing his sock drawer). Her less-than-subtle prodding keeps the "defective detective" on track in his investigations, as well as in his efforts to convince Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) to allow him to return to the force.

The reveal that the killer stumbled into the perfect alibi by complete accident was honestly the best part of this episode.
Shows that it doesn't matter how clever you are , for better and for worse , *nobody* can account for just pure dumb luck.

I think this is the first and only series I’ve seen where they don’t just say cut the colored wire, and instead do say something practical that could actually be correct in bomb defusing, I do not have experience defusing bombs but cutting the wire that connects the battery to the detonator, so the detonator cannot activate, makes logical sense to me

There's no "logic" to home-made bombs. There's a reason why bomb squads generally don't even _try_ to defuse small bombs, they just pile some stuff around them and make them explode. Hollywood bomb "defusal" is just about as realistic as "enhancing" images from a VHS camera until you can read a license plate or identify a face that started out half a pixel tall.
the pros who make better bombs either makes closed double circuits or pressure-temperature hybrid detonators. either way, Monk got LUCKY this guy was a noob and not someone in the service of the government...who should actually be rotting in maximum security?

4:18: I didn't see any glue on that package...
An issue I just realized with this episode is that the mailboxes would have different temperatures due to the weather conditions which could speed up or slow down the glues degrading. He wouldn't be able to know the weather changes months in advance to prepare for it so the bombs could of easily dropped sooner or much later.
Being in California the weather is fairly stagnant. While it’s a risk it’s not one worth taking

Variation is not a bug, it's a feature.
Months +/- days is a pretty high accuracy. Monks theory put him into jail for 7-8 months. That is the bomb release window he was aiming for.
The criminal didn't need to know which day or even week the package would drop. He simply needed them to *not* drop until after he was arrested, so that he would have his alibi. So, he would play things safe and get himself jailed for months, knowing that the bombs would have been delivered by then even if they lasted a bit longer than he assumed.
I suppose it doesn't matter then.

no, you never remove the detonator from the explosives. the detonator is stopping the explosion, not starting it. im a master bomb surgeon who has played bomberman atleast 2.5 times so i think i would know.

I've watched tons of tv shows and Monk is one of the best I've ever seen and so underrated! It got quite popular in Germany but still, very underrated

In these days of wireless technology, screw that.
I vaguely remember a case in the 1980s of a bombmaker who did exactly that and accidentally blew himself up. It's impossible to tell if this was the case (because he died), but the theory was that he wired the bomb the wrong way so that turning on the timer immediately triggered the detonator.

Surely the point of the bomb was for it explode as soon as it's opened? I guess it read the script and had to wait for them to call the bomb squad, fetch a pair of cutters and disable it? Makes no sense.
I am still confused, what did the guy do for work? Why did he have a maid and why were there children in his house? lol its been a while since I since the episode.
Well, he's in the coma so maybe the maid took adventage of it fit herself.
It appeared that his father was rich but him and his siblings were fighting over his will, which is why he sent those bombs so he would be the sole air. When Monk when to visit the house, it appeared that the maid was having a party while her boss was in coma.
