    Curious to know why you call these videos ‘First impressions’ ! Isn’t ‘Second impression’ a more appropriate title ?
    In India, Aion is 40% less expensive than Studio/Procyon and priced similar to Lamy Pur. I too prefer Aion to Safari any day !

    I really love the Aions for their rugged, indestructible construction. You have to get converters for them. You can also use a variety of Lamy nibs including all their stub nibs.

    I love mine with a Lamy Z50 nib. I wish I had gotten it in Red, instead of Black, when it was available. I installed a Preppy eye-dropper conversion O-ring on the Section threads to get rid of the Cap rattle.

    I’m very fond of the Lamy Aion. I have two; a Silver (F) and a Dark Green (M) one. I like that the nib is designed a little differently than the standard steel nibs on Lamy’s other models. I really like the pen’s overall dimensions and appearance. I sometimes think that the Aion is only trumped by the magnificent Lamy 2000, and to a much lesser extent maybe the Dialog 3, among all of Lamy’s existing pens. Both my Aions write very well. And I use them from time to time.
    The looseness of the cap is universally cited as an annoying flaw of the Aion. It doesn’t bother me much at all. Besides, I haven’t found it to affect the wetness of the nib. No drying out issues, in my experience. The only flaw I have experienced is with the converter. I’ve had ink flow issues on both my Aions when using the converter - but not with the cartridge. The converter seems to me to fit imperfectly. And hence possibly the flow problems I’ve had. Which is a pity, because I prefer using converters to cartridges. Now, I use the Aion with the cartridge with no problem.
    For a very comparably priced Lamy, I personally prefer and would recommend the Aion over the Studio, every time. But I like the Procyon and think it is a very obvious alternative to the Aion. I consider both the Lamy Aion and the Platinum Procyon to be quite under-rated for what they are. The ugly Lamy Safari & Co. are really in the much lower leagues. Comparing it to the Aion is very flattering to the Safari.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be fair, the nib does not dry out. I think my main problem with this pen is that I can't get excited about it. On a good note: no converter troubles for me!
      You bring up a good point about the Studio. I love the looks of that one, but hate writing with it. I should have included the Studio in this comparison. The reason I included the Safari was to show the difference in nibs. The Studio would have been a better way to show a comparable pen and also compare the nibs.

    • @ashwintadinada2579
      @ashwintadinada2579 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the exact same problem with the converter ! It’s way too lose, difficult to fill, and because of that there are ink flow issues - usually have to manually manage the converter so that more ink is pushed to the nib

    • @sajjadhusain4146
      @sajjadhusain4146 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashwintadinada2579 ..Yea, like I said earlier, the converter in the Aion clearly seems to not fit and seat perfectly. Pity I have the problem with both my Aion pens. It would write for a while and then start to dry out and stop writing altogether. I’d have to give the pen a shake to get the flow back and the pen writing again, only to have the ink flow issue repeat after a few lines of writing. So frustrating! I reluctantly had to switch to the cartridge and the flow issues ceased. I’m very fond of the Aion. But I haven’t yet seen a nib size beyond medium. Strange. Do they not offer a broad or stub etc? I’d have bought a B if I found it when I bought the pens.

    I really like the Lamy Aion Dark Green purchased in Dec 2021. Tight cap, no rattles or movement. The matte finish on the section and the shape of section is comfortable and great to write with. I also like the look of the nib.

      Thanks for sharing! I'm glad to hear that the new version doesn't rattle. I agree about the matte finish: it really makes the metal pen quite comfortable.

    I have two, the second is a lovely. Blue one. I find it really comfy to write with and the nibs are very good. It is about a third of the price of the 2000 , which i also have and like.

    • @bikkies
      @bikkies 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you tried a Studio? That feels like a far more solid pen to me, at a broadly comparable price (here in the UK anyway) and with a decent range of finishes. As with many others, I find its slick section a bit off-putting but it's not a deal-breaker for me.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is certainly lower cost than the Lamy 2000. But I just wasn't thrilled with it.

  • @bikkies
    @bikkies 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have one Aion. I am massively put off by the cap spinning and flapping round in the breeze. My other Lamy pens are great at keeping the nib from drying out but with the Aion, I just don't have that assurance. I like things that fit together snugly and if a floppy cap is a design choice then I don't understand the decision. I'm glad I bought the Aion to build my experience but I really doubt I'll be getting another, until such time as they sort that out. My Aion was bought within the last year so, unless they've only recently fixed it, it doesn't seem like they've improved on the capping. It's still an expensive baby's rattle.

    • @pastelpinkfairy
      @pastelpinkfairy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100% same. The cap bothers me a lot.

    • @bikkies
      @bikkies 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pastelpinkfairy I really don't understand why it's this way. I can't believe a company like Lamy would not have noticed something like this. I think everything they do has a reason, a structure, a purpose. They strike me as very intentional. What possible benefit can be obtained from such a design choice (emphasis on choice), contrasted with the inevitable quality control impressions it'd give in the eyes of the consumer, is lost on me. I'm a full-on Lamy fanboy and I'm not usually a tough sell when it comes to their pens, but this one is a miss here.

    • @gertahnstrom784
      @gertahnstrom784 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bikkies From an interview I've seen with someone from Lamy, I can't remember where, sadly, the design is supposed to make it so that when one tries to "unscrew the cap" it will free-wheel and make the body of the pen stay put and not let loose from the grip section, which can happen with a tight fitting pen. Have had that issue with my Lamy Logo that also have metal threads from the grip section to the body. On the Logo I solved that by putting some bee's wax mixed with oil on the threads making them a bit more sticky, while still smooth to operate.
      So my guess is that the design ended up that way to specifically address those issues, as well as not having the slippy grip of the studio, to differentiate the model program of Lamy.

    • @bikkies
      @bikkies 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gertahnstrom784 That's really interesting, thank you. I still don't like it but I was sure there'd be a reason. I've heard of problems with the Nemosine Singularity where the barrel would be unscrewed by accident because of where the cap threads are placed on the section, and I had an issue of pulling off the threaded cap of a Jinhao 86 when not paying attention, so it obviously is a thing. I do wonder though whether they have something similar to the Platinum sprung inner liner inside the cap to mate with the section on the inside. I could see the nib drying out within days or less otherwise, with the outer cap swinging around like a church bell in a tornado. I'm sure they'll have thought that through as well ...

    • @marilyngardner4269
      @marilyngardner4269 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bikkies That's true about the Nemosine Singularity -- they were great little pens for the price, but the barrel could unscrew when you meant to unscrew the cap. I've also had this happen with my two metal Gravitas pens from Ireland. The barrel threads seem to loosen for some reason and then the barrel unscrews when I'm trying to remove the cap.

    I have 3 Aions and always have 1 or more inked up in my regular circulation. The nib is actually slightly different than the usual Lamy nib in feel. I noticed the "loose" cap for a couple minutes and that's about it. The park certainly doesn't dry out result, so the "loose" cap is still sealed reasonably well. I like the dimensions and weight of the pen as well.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right about the seal. Despite the looseness, this pen does not dry out. I didn't notice a difference in feel, but that's just me. For me, it's just that there are other pens I like better.

    I'm a bit confused that this video was titled 'First impressions'. Two other notes are calling the 2000 a Safari and the nib on the Aion a M when it's an EF.
    I understand the point of this being a pen not to everyone's liking. The rather loose cap, as far as I've understood a very conscious design choice since the designer seemed to have had the experience of unscrewing a pen body instead of the cap from some pens before, the cap is made to spin freely if twisted.
    I have mine in the red finish which I think is rather gorgeous. Mine keeps tight and doesn't dry out, despite the cap's loose design. I would call it a snap cap rather than a slip cap though, since it clicks around the very slim rim on the tip of the grip section, in the same fashion as the studio.
    Mine doesn't really rattle much, but I can hear it if I try. But I don't really sit and shake my pens. But still I wish they'd redesign the inner cap to have like three little springy plastic prongs, like the brass ones in the 2000, that would make the cap feel more secure and metigate the rattle, while still fulfilling the spinning design requirement.
    I think this pen is supposed to widen Lamy's offering in their so called 'modern collection' compared to their more student focused offerings such as the ABC and the Safari. Therefore I think comparing it to the Safari is a disservice to the pen other than in terms of 'here's what you get in this price range vs this' kinda terms.
    I'll be sad to see it not appearing on this channel again, even if I fully understand the decision to let it go, if you don't enjoy it and never use it.

    • @sajjadhusain4146
      @sajjadhusain4146 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly think that complaints regarding the ‘looseness’ of the cap are rather exaggerated and unnecessary. As you and I’ve already pointed out, it doesn’t negatively affect the pen’s proper capping to close, nor the nib’s wetness at all. So, the cap spinning freely is hardly much of a flaw.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right: I did misspeak when I called the 2000 by the wrong name. As for the nib: I misread the letters on it under the light. It is an EF.
      With this pen, I see the loose cap as a solution in search of a problem since it's a snap cap, if you prefer, and not a screw cap.
      I would agree that it is more adult looking than the Safari and the ABC. But I thought it was worth comparing because of the nib. The pen I should have included in this comparison was the Lamy Studio.

    I really like the color of the Forest Green Lamy Aion and got to try one in a brick and mortar shop, but decided not to buy one because of the loose cap. Similarly, I love the propeller clip on the Lamy Studio but hate the slippery, sloping metal grip, so I didn't get one of those either. Seems like every Lamy model has one feature I like (although I am delighted with my Lamy 2000).

    The original 'First Impression' of this pen published 3 years ago stated it had an EF nib. In this 'Revisit' you say the nib is an M. Did you swap nibs on the Aion? I only checked your original video because I didn't think this looked like an M in the writing sample.
    I agree with many of the points you made about the Aion. The Aion, in my opinion, doesn't look well proportioned i.e. nib too small for the size of pen. At this price point I believe Lamy produce a much better pen - the Studio. I really don't think the Aion has a place in the Lamy pen range.
    I can understand your lack of enthusiasm for the pen. It could have been the poor man's Lamy 2000, a sort of Lamy 1000 if you like. However, I don't think it quite hits the mark. Perhaps Lamy should give it a facelift and bring out a revised version.

    • @WaskiSquirrel

      I misread the letters on the nib while I was filming. It is indeed an EF.
      To be fair, I don't like the Studio either. But if I could do this video over, I would have included the Studio.
      A poor man's Lamy 2000 would have been a good pen: maybe a different plastic and steel nib with a piston (or converter) and a minimalistic design.
