My issue is instead that the soil drains way too fast and doesn't stay wet for long. It gets hard and won't absorb water.
So this stuff is in pool plaster?
Calcitic lime.
Can you use old drywall that is not painted?
no... use gypsum for the soil... 'soil gypsum'. There are additives in drywall that you'd not want in the soil.
Not for sodic soils.
