Your friend is absolutely right. The round stone rods you found are "core samples" that were drilled from the rock. It's a common mining sampling technique used to see mineralization and quality of the ore/stone. They usually put those in core boxes and keep them for reference. You might have noticed the red numbers on the core which are reference numbers of the "holes" which they came from. These would be logged recording the position on the claim and depth they were drilled. They make excellent paper weights or visual interest in a garden (especially when they get wet).
@@moneyfran877 What is the point of your comment? The person made a really interesting, informative and observational post and yours is just low-IQ drivel. Did you not finish school braaah? Huh, brah?
Quarries, especially the blue water filled quarries, are filled with ground water. The blue water is caused by a lower PH, which prevents bacterial and algal growth, thus leaving the water a pristine color. Most likely, the different layers you saw, while free diving, were a meeting between the cold, pure ground water and the warmer rain water, which stays at the surface. They average temperature at depth is 35-40⁰ F and they do not warm up in the summer. The deeper water remains a constant temperature all year long. Quarries are so dangerous because, when you hit that cold water, especially when cliff jumping, your body's uncontrollable response is to gasp for air, causing you to suck in a lungful of water. Also, because your body is trying to keep you alive, it cuts off all unnecessary functions. Your body's only goal, at this time, is preserving your core temperature. This causes blood supply to be shunted off from your arms and legs, causing severe muscle cramping. It also causes breathing to slow so it becomes extremely difficult to draw breath and pull in enough oxygen to stay alert. Many people will completely pass out, when hitting the water and drown due to this. Also... Because the sides of the quarry tend to be vertical, sometimes for hundreds of feet, if you float or swim away from a point where you're able to easily pull yourself out of the water, you're doomed without help, in an emergency situation. Please be careful searching those quarries. Use a dry suit, if you feel like you must explore them. The first rule of diving is to NEVER dive alone!! Don't do it! It's stupid and dangerous. Be smart. If you're on TH-cam, you're a rolemodel to someone. Be responsible with that title.
I read this and found it really interesting. Thanks! People have told me there are sometimes underwater currents that can pull people away after a high jump, I find that hard to believe for some reason.
I started diving in 1969 and learned how to dive in the Florida Keys. I was still finishing High School in the Mountains of NC. Not a whole lot of dive opportunities. Every now and then, I would get a call from the Local Sheriff if they needed help with a diving situation, and, if available, I'd come help. An acquaintance of mine called about his car that had gone missing, and the Police Department called too within minutes to ask if I would help find the car. I told them I'd be right there. It was a quarry about 20 minutes from my home. Got there and got all set up. No one else diving, so I had a safety line attached to me. There was initially concern that he young lady he had been with was still in the car. She had left the car and walked home and did not surface until almost noon. Once she was located, it went back to just find the car, and that was when they were calling me. So, I went in where we saw that there had been some disturbances at the edge of the quarry. I was expecting about 50 foot deep, but I was not expecting the near zero visibility. About 30 feet down, I found the car caught on some wires, so that would make it easier to remove. As I am heading up, after attaching a separate line to the car, I turn to head up and bump into something terribly squishy. Talk about horror film material. It was a dead cow, weighted down with a bunch of cinder blocks, but the stomach had swollen up with gasses, so it was floating there 20 feet below the water surface and 30 feet from the bottom like a macabre Macy's Balloon in the water. They pulled the car up, and the cow's blocks got wrapped in their lines, so it came up too. I was glad to be able to leave. It sure stank. Quarries are often dumping grounds for all locals. Can be interesting. I made several trips back there in early Spring while the water was Gin Clear. Much more fun and no Horror! Thanks, this was neat and brought back several memories.
We swim in quarries all the time here in Canada. Aside from the temp, you need to be cautious of rebar in the water. Depending on the kind of quarry, gravel quarries can have loose sides, and you can collapse them by climbing out. If it starts going.. you’re gone. You literally can be vacuumed down and you’re only being discovered if your body ends up above the gravel. Please be careful of quarries, they really can be dangerous.
If you ever find yourselves in a loose gravel quarry, remember to stay on your belly when you’re coming out onto the shore. Do not stand until you’re at least 5 feet away from the edge.
I’ve dove quarries several times and it gets cold as anything even in the middle of summer. Those queries can get really deep, one was over 80ft. Keep on it Yappy!
I grew up in Illinois where there are quite a few quarries and such that have been abandoned and filled up with water. Not just Illinois, but quarries in general are the perfect place to "get rid" of "things" you no longer want because the access is usually limited, and they are extremely deep. I personally know of a quarry somewhere in Illinois that holds the remains of a 1980 Trans Am that was "stolen" in the mid 80s and it ended up at the bottom of a quarry for the insurance money. It wasn't me or my car, but I know its true.
I have a load of abandoned quarries near my house in the UK and I'm constantly hearing stories of people drowning due to shock, as well as the convection currents beneath the surface dragging people under😬 please don't die dude I need ur vids in my life
There is a eerie quarry in near Hexham Northumberland that I used to visit as a kid, wasn't a very big looking quarry but you could see the cliff just drop.
After seeing the beginning of this I want to see Yappy and the boys go on a paranormal investigation of a haunted location lol! Halloween special episode?
I dove an old quarry in Arkansas and got lucky and found a variety of stuff (gold bracelet, wallet, etc.)! Sorry your dive was a bust man, that’s always a bummer! But those quarry sites are also really dangerous, so maybe it was for the best.
Omg! I was going no no no when I saw off that quarry!!! Brought back memories of a lake here in Texas, Possum Kingdom Lake close to Dallas that has massive cliffs at an area called Hell’s Gate. How I got talked into jumping off the top of that thing I’ll never know but I did! Never thought about keeping my legs straight so I tucked them back at the knee. I hit that water with my shins and the pain was excruciating!!! I could barely walk! Got home and called the doctor I worked for and he met me and diagnosed massive hematoma’s I both legs. Then he had to drain them. Ouch! It’s wonderful to be young and stupid sometimes but glad you rethought that dive!
🚩🦺Yappy I just watched your video yesterday, Sunday Aug 23 and ironically I just found out today that a scuba diver was diving in our local quarry and he never surfaced. Unfortunately the rescuers were not able to locate him until today. 😔 This quarry is 🇨🇦Canada's largest and a very popular spot for swimming and summer activities. (For perspective, it's very close to Stratford, where Justin Bieber lived and where he was discovered.) I'm posting this just to give you pause before going scuba diving in a quarry. As someone who dives in quarries regularly, I can confirm that the thermocline can be shocking but it's easily managed by wearing a wetsuit. Even a 5mm suit will keep you relatively in check. Just stay above the thermocline unless you have a nice full-body wetsuit.
The layer you mentioned, looked like oil in the water? Its a thermocline. Quarry diving, depending on depth, you can experience multible thermoclines. My team and i dive them all the time. If you are even in TN hit up Isle of Scuba, we can show you some awesome quarrys to dive in.

The story was really encouraging 😂😂😂
I had put the story about "it's a strange place because dozens of people committed suicide after a weird ceremonies"
And they were never found again, except some blood at the shore and scratches from fingers leading to the water = 😳
Have a nice Diving experience 😁
