This was perfect. Thank you. I watched because I didn’t know how to identify new/old cans and new/old manifold gauges. This covered it so now I can shop. Thanks.
The self sealing can requirement has made things a PITA. Needed 3 cans to charge my vehicle and had to use 5 with possibly 2 wasted due to the poor quality of the valves. Had both the new style and the old piercing type using a manifold gauge set. All 5 worked poorly due to limited flow from the can. I think the EPA has created an unintended consequence due to poor can/valve manufacturing that will lead to people taking unorthodox methods to extract the refrigerant or the less responsible just throwing defective cans in the trash. I'm glad it's still available to consumers, I think the new regulation will result in more harm than good. Great video by the way !
The Schradeer in the Super Tech brand of cans I just bought (Sep 2023) at Walmart do not seal if I remove the valve. I bought Super Tech R134a sealant and Super Tech R134a to repair my fridge. So far the repair is working and I have 10 degrees F in the freezer compartment. We'll see if the repair lasts or I get to buy a new fridge.
Thanks for the video. I was recharging my van after installing a new AC system and ran into problems. I had old two cans of refrigerant that I've had for years and they went in with no problem, but when I tried to put in the next can that I bought this morning, it wouldn't go in and I couldn't figure out why. I noticed that when I removed the tap the can stopped leaking, so I figured it must be some EPA bravo sierra so I started investigating. Thanks for clearing it up.
Thanks you saved me a couple bucks, I thought it was mandatory that I had to buy that adapter. But I have the new can, and new style valve. So no need for that adapter.
Great Video! Thank you that was the info I was needing I have the old style connector which would damage the Schrader valve that finally explains it thank you thank you thank you
Great video, however I recently learned that the EPA changed the Freon cans to have a stop valve in them. I also learned the hard way that the old can adapter fitting does not work correctly with the new style cans. Would you consider updating your video to inform people of this new development? Thanks
Very amazing video bro very straight to the point, so helpful i now know exactly what i need to do the job right appreciate your time to upload this video !
Have you ever experienced attaching a new style valve to the new style can, but refrigerant doesn’t flow out? I’m having that issue and I bought two different new style valves.
Sooooo my feon on my Honda been low and I thought the problem was somewhere else because I couldn't fill in new feon was using old style hose to new style can , watched your video and went to get the $3 adapter and now it's ice cold again !!! TY
Got that same A/C Pro hose/gauge as well as an old puncture valve....wondered why neither worked with my new can of 134A. Thanks for the heads up on the black plastic adapter thingy....man, do I feel old. (I am old)
The video is great but If you showed the two types of taps tips first then it is easier to understand how they work. Basically the piercing type won't work with new cans unless you get the adapter.
The new so-called 'self sealing' cans don't always work. They won't let the refrigerant out. And they're not gonna stay sealed for long anyway. Just buy and use a side can piercing tap (before they're illegal!). They just work regardless of the can's valve.
@@davidgomez3737 Maybe both. The hole in the can is 3mm, so if the tip is that size it will block the flow. Skinnier ones wobble off the valve if they are still pointed and bugger it.
Well, I just wasted three or four hours. Thanks for the video telling me what's up. Maybe next to EPA can come up with some fuel cans that make things a lot easier... Oh... Wait...
I had bought the new style valve to use with a self seal can and for some reason the Freon was not charging in to the system, I don’t know if it was the manifold not working , but when I removed the valve from the hose refrigerant started coming out and couldn’t get the valve to close down the can, not sure if i needed the adapter plus the new style valve but ima give a second try with adapter
I was literally out there for an hour wondering what the fuck i was doing wrong. I literally worked residential hvac and this truck was kicking my ass. I knew it had to be something fundamental like this..
Thanks for the video. I was sitting there thinking what I am doing wrong? Is my valve damaged? Needed to add refrigerant to my mother-laws car. I will go purchase me an adapter and hope that I did not damage the Schrader valve on the can.
Great info! Help! My manifold gauge set (Harbor Freight) has a 1/2" yellow service hose, but every self sealing can tap only accommodates 1/4" service hoses. Please enlighten me! Thank you!
@@cuulongquach3482 I physically measure the threads of my yellow service hose and it is 1/2 inch. I took my gauges to O'Reilly to look at their can tap, the clerk opened it up and my hose fit exactly. So I'm not sure why a/c service hoses are so confusing between sizes. But the $7.99 unit at O'Reilly needed no adapter at all.
my can with the Schrader valve leaked like razy even using the new valve. could I have damaged it by turning it to far in ? it got very cold so could it have frozen ? I tried taking the valve right off thinking it would seal but nope.. whole can rushed out.. did I do something wrong ?
i was having trouble getting the new valve r134 to come out, even with the new piercing valve. it was because i put a schraeder adapter on the out port of the new valve, that goes to the gauge's yellow service hose. so i took off the adapter, and i'll try it the next time i recharge.
the new can makes sense. Think of spray paint. Its the same valve. If you pull the trigger off spray paint it wont leak. I bought r132a today and borrowed a manifold and the autozone doesnt know the cans seal???
So... The can tap port were you connect the yellow hose does not have any schrader valve; and the yellow hose does have a pin to push in a valve when screwing on the two connections together. So if the can tap does not have any type of valve, how does the liquid began to flow because the yellow hose is not being pushed in by any thing?
I believe, then that yellow hose was made to attach to a manifold w/ a valve. My manifold has two yellow ports one valved and one w/o. I believe it work as a check valve to keep any refrigerant from flowing into the can if you accidentally hook it to the high side.
Great little video - thanks! So when you connect the new valve you turn the handle all the way clockwise to release the freon and then leave it there while it's connected to the LOW pressure side of the AC system? I wasn't sure because the old system you pierce the top and then you turn the knob counterclockwise to release the r134a.
The old piercing tips may wobble and run off the side of the schrader and ruin it. One that I have has a tip that is so fat it plugged the hole in the top of the can. Of course you can't see what is going on inside there. Maybe you can grind a flat end on the piercing tip.
I have old cans (puncture style) but new self sealing service hoses. Will it pierce the can (I havent tried yet) or is there any adapter for that? I would hate to have to buy old hoses
Best option is to buy new cans. The schraders will eventually leak while the pierce style will not unless it rusts. So save the piercing-style cans for long term and buy and use new cans while the refrigerant is still available. Eventually the price of the old style cans will go up when new is no longer being made.
Just want to comment that if anyone is thinking of picking up the plastic spin-on adapter for the new Shrader valve cans, it worked for me. I can still use my old low-side gauge (which is good for a quick top-off). I paid three dollars for it at O'Reilly's, but Autozone, Home Depot, etc. have them as well.
@@ohger1 Thanks. I read a few reviews and it seems these are rather fragile being made all plastic. Same for the one in the video. I wonder if there's a metal model.
Well, I tried to empty a super tech can for 1/2 hour or so and barely moved. With my would say 12 years old charger. It throws light at it. I went to Walmart web page to see what the f is wrong with super tech can of r134 and there write "Requires a new EPA Self-Sealing Valve Recharge Hose or Adapter for old style Recharge Hoses." If would not exist internet, and yes, I lived in time before the Internet, I would probably never have figured this out.
The EPA should have made the threads or size of the threads different than the old style can, so it would not fit. That way you cant use the old style adapter and damage the schrader valve.
I can't seems to empty that self sealing r134 there is always at least 2 ounces that won't come out no matter what, that new self sealing is a pain and wasteful. It will. protect the environment but not your wallet.
New style cans SUCK - it takes 5 times as long for the can to discharge and its super fiddly trying to get the depth of the plunger right especially with cheap chinese manufold guage sets
It's not true that you can no longer buy the piercing cans. In fact, as I write this it's 4 years since this video was posted (Sept. 2024) and not only can you still by piercing cans but it's difficult to find sealing cans where I live in Northern Illinois. Most of the Walmarts in my area don't even carry the sealing cans. But I managed to find a couole sealing cans and they are a disaster. They wouldn't release refrigerant unless you fiddle around endlessly and suddely they start releasing but won't stop even if you remove rhe valve. And, YES, I'm using the correct sealing valve. Maybe that's why so many places don't even carey the sealing type cans in 2024. Today, two of my sealing cans did put a drop of tefrigerant in my cars AC system and completely vent into the atmosphere. So much for progress! I'm going back to piercing cans.
