I’m certain that this was not intended to be racist or insulting in any way. It was just a scene that allowed Conway to use his skill at physical humor. (There is nothing funnier than a clumsy person chopping things with a knife. :) ) If they were asked about it, I hope they said that, at the time, this was not considered racist and you can’t hold people to the standards that were developed 30 years after the fact.

Tim was doing a version of the closing tune Carol always sang to the camera/audience at the end of every episode ("I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together..."). It was a trademark thing she'd do. And then she'd tug her earlobe as a greeting sign to her grandma watching at home.

When did Carol's husband take over producing the show or was he the producer the whole time? I heard it put quite a strain on the marriage.
Joe Hamilton produced the show for its entire run. The marriage ended several years after the show finished in 1978 if I recall.
