What People Get Wrong About Masculinity

  • Masculinity isn't a product. It isn't to be bought from some red pill grifter. Masculinity is natural and healthy. Masculinity is not toxic. What people get wrong about masculinity, is that it's not flashy. It's not about showing off. It's timeless and good.

In the societies structures it must have been very difficult, if not impossible. My thoughts on masculinity are basically: if a man has to demonstrate how masculine he is, then he is not truly masculine at all. A genuine man cares little about proving himself; he simply lives, and his true masculinity shines through effortlessly, he is a support to those around him. I am with you on this.

Thank you. My late husband re-built a three hundred year old ruin for us and did it alone. He was a self contained, kind man who loved to use his hands to make things. Real men do not need to prove they are men, they just are and it is instinctive in them to protect others. We hear so much about 'toxic masculinity' and what is that supposed to mean? Men and women complement each other. It has worked for centuries.

Bjorn, you certainly can build a house. My wife , my two sons and I built our house. We started when I was 58 years old with zero prior experience. And it has turned out beautifully. A house doesn't need to float like a boat or stay in the air as a plane. If you don't like how a portion turns out simply knock it down and do it over. Trust me, anyone can build a house.

    • @matthewnirenberg
      @matthewnirenberg 18 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

In what country? I hate to break it to you but in most countries, literally every little thing that is part of building a house requires courses, govt licences and heaps of money.
Painting, plastering, framing, bricklaying, concreting, insulating, electrical, plumbing, etc. are all regulated professions that require licenced professionals, and there's plenty more (I've only listed a few) things that you can't legally do.
Trust me - in most of the world, even if you know how to build a house and do everything properly, if you try you will end up in jail with decades of time due to the thousands of criminal charges you will face.

Masculinity is an integral part of a man's character and personality that is built in to him from childhood by his upbringing, his education, the example from those around him, and his interaction with his environment that shows him why he exists and how he needs to behave.

Your last comment about masculine/feminine being “ancient” - I laughed so loud because that is the point.
We (women) always were there too, but to me it is like we “get discovered” now.
And as you say - it is difficult to explain masculine/feminine while being “it”.
Apart from that - you gave my thoughts a different direction. I am a single-raisin’ (mom) and I now noticed that I was forced to do - or I instinctively covered - both part and I did not understand why I was so tired and wraught. And I have a son so I could not step down…

I watch many of your videos not because I always agree with them but because they are sometimes thought provoking.
In this case, though, I happen to agree with many of your assessments - not because most of these characteristics are particularly masculine but because they are characteristics of mature adults.
I'm commenting today because I think your assessment of what it means to be a protector doesn't actually go far enough. While it is commendable for a man to protect his hearth and home - his family - the role of a man extends beyond his own bounds. Humans are naturally gregarious, so we all have responsibilities to our community as well. Consider the dozens of families who lost men (for the sake of this discussion, I'm ignoring the other people lost) in the recent aviation disaster in Washington. Do those children not also deserve protection? Will their sons not also need masculine guidance on how to navigate the world? What of their mother's, wives, and daughters? Are they no longer worthy of going out in public without harassment simply because they lack a manly protector?
What I'm missing from your video is the extension of your philosophy that a man ensures that all people are allowed to live without fear and harassment rather than only those with a man at home.
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

I agree with many of the sentiments of this, EXCEPT I don't agree with with the idea of "men's feelings matter less". I actually think that is partially what compounds the confusion of what masculinity and equality is now, because men's feelings matter as much as anyone else's, and to say otherwise contributes to inequality and men's often silent struggle with mental health. Its an old fashioned and inherently untrue statement.
Also your comment about builidng a house being masculine made me laugh, perhaps cos it is true that it requires strength to do, but does sound like a somewhat absurd statement now.
Appreciate you sharing your thoughts, as always.

Always nice to see you again, Bjorn. Your videos always transmit this peacefullnes to me, which my city life can´t really give me enough at the moment. However, thanks for your work man!
And to the topic: for me the ultimate masculinity is when a man have values like truth/honesty, loyalty, morals, culture and such for which he is always brave enough to stand up for no matter who and how many people will be against it.

I'm a trans woman, but virtuous masculinity has always very important to me. Masculinity is strong, in the way it can carry a raw, uncracked egg across a mountain without cracking it, and tells no-one. It takes tenacity, humility, strength, endurance, discipline, consistency. It knows that the opportunities to be and look like a fool are endless. It knows that excess material progress, aside that which provides for family and community is needless indulgence.
I like when masculine men speak, it's the masculine man who is able to confidently and calmly reassure a little girl that the wolf outside won't harm her, then grabs the axe and walks outside. He doesn't boast, he understands the wolf is also just trying to live, that conflict is not sport, it's not glory, it just is.
Glad to hear this perspective, thank you.

One masculine trait is the desire to create order out of chaos. To tame things into a hierarchy. When a man is young he plays with chaos and when older, has chaos at his heel.

It is time to revive true masculinity. Strong but not a bully. Capable but not a braggart. A protector but not overbearing. Able of walking away from critics, without looking back, knowing who he is, and has nothing to apologize for.

Then it is time for women to remember how to be a woman. Some women have had to take on both roles due to a lack of 'real men'. It doesn't work because it isn't balanced. I personally would welcome the return of masculinity as I have lost my feminism along the way, and I would love to reclaim it.

Hello again brother. I'm put in mind of yin and yang by your discussion; and that if you dispense with difference, all you're left with is grey. Some boys are more feminine, some girls are more masculine - that's just how they are, whether as a result of nature or nurture. To coin the old phrase, you can't put a square peg in a round hole, and there are things about us that are intrinsic. No amount of hours watching Andrew Tate will change us at our core. The important thing is that we are patient with ourselves as we learn to become comfortable in our own skins.
Honestly, looking back, I spent far too long trying to emulate others to fit in, or to capture an ideal... The best thing I ever did was learn to accept myself as I am and build from there.
Forget the norm. There is no such thing.
Thanks, as ever Bjorn. You're one sage individual. Peace.
