    Makes me think of this witticism, "I've had this broom for 30years, 6 new heads, 8 new handles".
    Nice version.

    I found a Magnavox console many years ago with a similar power amp with a 6CA4 2 6BQ5's and a 6EU7 that had an exceptionally good sound

    10:44 - Kudos for testing amps with a square wave!
    I've suggested to SEVERAL other TH-camrs to do the same! One of whom simply runs a 1-Khz-or so sine wave , verifies that it is indeed a sine wave, and twiddles the tone controls and looks for varying amplitude. Square-wave testing reveals so much more!

      Well, that settles it then. You two are clearly better than everyone else.

    Nice video. Is there anything Magnavox in it at all? It just seems to me to be a wholly built amp somewhat based on a Magnavox design.

    So are the 6BQ5 pentodes wired in triode mode then?

    12:40 - So that squealing was a grounding problem. My first guess is that there was no grid leak resistor :)

    10:49 - The sloping is a sign of limited bandwidth at the LOW end :)

    Affordable SE tetrode sound! Just add high-efficiency speakers.

    what does the choke do? Magnavox only put them in the larger amplifiers

    So I am a little confused. Do the input jacks get grounded to the chassis at the star point? How does it not have continuity to the chassis if it is grounded?

    • @aland2253
      @aland2253 ปีที่แล้ว

      A little late but the loop was created because the Jack was grounded, by a wire, to the star ground. It was also (unintentionally) grounded to the chassis.

    The amp shown is NOT a Magnavox 8600 amp and is an entirely built out of different parts. New, chassis , different output trans, yada, yada.
    Personally , i built this amp exactly as drawn and did not like the sound as much as the RH84 using similar components. I do agree that the sound from a SE EL84 is really good.

      i have a hard time with any modern schematics stating a title as their own. like this dg-se1 or the rh84, the way of doing these type of things are anything but new and anyone whom claims a schematic as their own is kidding themselves.

    just checking - you can run this passive, correct, direct from an iphone output to the input of the amp?

    • @Blueglow
      @Blueglow ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes. you might get better sound with a preamp but it will work fine without.

    • @a1chemist1
      @a1chemist1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Blueglow can I use the preamp and then use the phono inputs (blue and brown)? Betting there’s equalization in there for phono that I may not want? Also how to switch on phono. There’s only a selector switch for AM, FM, and FM stereo. The FM stereo gives nothing except distortion, btw.

    People claim that a beam power tube amp HAS to be UL to sound good...not necessarily.
