- Kate Bush Whistle Test Cloud Busting and interview from October 8 1985. This vid contains an attempt at hiss reduction using the Audacity software. Also the interview is complete as the end of it is not cut off as in other uploaded versions.
Kate is a total class act. 0:05 Many interviewers have written about her "huge, defensive smile" and the way she simply refuses to answer loaded questions. (Total silence, smiling because she's in complete control. The topic is dead - next question!) It's funny to actually see her technique demonstrated here.

As youth in 78, she was a total surprize to me, being into rock , Zep, Sabbath, and alike, so Kate Bush sort of filled a gap, this beautiful, sensual woman with her magical songs allowed one to drift and dream and be calm, not standard as a rebellious youth. But as you begin to slowly find out more about this woman, she is almost fearful of public attention, yet produces these wonderful productions of song and dance, which many thousands enjoy , even millions , still my favourite female artist , captivating !

On point bro me same 70s rocker then my older buddy from the local steel mill played Kate Bush on his bad azz home stereo and in 78 i was 17 and fell in love with Kates style , But still rocking to Zepp and the rest :)
She is so classy. Interviewers have such a habit of wanting to find out what one artist thinks of another....she was gracious and kind, but chose not to indulge the interviewer's curiosity about her thoughts of Madonna :) Well done for keeping him on track!!!!

It's likely you are told before going on air to make it easier for the shot of the presenter. Usually such things are not seen as their is either a cut to another person or another camera but here there is neither which is slightly odd.

She is a shy person and adorable with it. Just before the Cloudbusting video plays and they announce it I love her face. She often did that. She opens those huge eyes of hers looks side to side with excitement and glee and little nervousness. She is expressive. She is different and slightly eccentric which I love.

He finishes “now i just want to be myself, and it keeps getting further and further away.” Kate Bush is really good at being herself.

"I just know that something good is gonna happen" .. Not with these two interviewing her it won't. Richard Skinner describing the wonderful 'Hounds of Love' as "This thing you've been working on!" .. Kate never gets drawn, though. Never veers from talking humbly about her passion for making music her own way and just hoping what she expresses is liked by people. The mark of a true genius is that they don't know just how good they are and the mark of a fool is to not know they are in the presence of greatness.

You're not making more out if it...she's so unbelievably bright and seemingly perfectly happy taking questions from the oblivious, not even a nano flinch registers as she politely answers the first boob (or his director?, or absence of director) making a complete non sequitur to madonna? Even if either boob, or program staff didn't do their homework before interviewing, I think anyone on this thread could come up with meaningful questions on the spot..oh well, at least the video quickly makes the interviewers intro vanish until they thought they needed a second interviewer to tag in, share the weight lol ..Sutherland did it because that's the kind of actor he is, the way he started out, lots of smaller roles he built his career on and a bright man in his own right who I bet knew Kate Bush, had the time and grabbed the gig saying "hell yes I'll do that..." (oh canada :) )...

She records whatever style she wants and doesn't answer to anyone.
She has always written and produced her own music.
A much better artist than Madonna that's for sure.

Ironically both Leos. Madonna the brash American Kate the cultured Brit but they were BOTH breaking new ground - both incredibly intelligent, brave and radical. I had both their albums growing up. The both knew the power of the video for promoting their music and were unique in how they used the video format to promote their careers. Agree! They both knew how to handle the media towards their own ends. Madonna took the media bitzkrieg approach, while Kate judiciously revealed the minimum necessary. (Both in the context of a male-dominated industry, where women weren't taken seriously at the time.) Kate and Madonna are often seen as polar opposites, but I admire them both.

Interviewers always seem so awkward around her. There are very few interviewers I've seen that interview her well. It doesn't seem like they do it on purpose and she's not awkward during the interviews, though, so I can't really tell what the issue is. lol

+razrv3lc You are absolutely right. I've seen the other interviews you are no doubt referring to. I think the 80s had this idea about this buzz word at the time 'indulgent'., Pop music didn't necessarily come from the same identical four bubblegum schoolgirls (taylor, katy, kesha, ariana) back then. The opportunity in the 80s for one hit wonders of a diverse sound and origin meant that there was this idea that art should be APPEALING to the masses. It was respectful to the record label who hired you to try and make your work appealing and fun. // Kate Bush managed to carve out a large audience with music that was unconventional, often sombre in mood, and didn't seem to have it's finger on the pulse of the market. Because of this, a lot of show biz women distrusted her, and felt she was very lucky. They weren't sure about the concepts she was talking about in her work and became openly bitchy in interviews, thinking she's sold a pretentious art house brand (but secretly knowing she's a creatively brilliant mind)

Kate is just so confident of herself and she her business of composing and performing songs, inside out. So often interviewers don't know what to ask her and which questions would make her stumble...She is a class act !!

If I remember rightly, they'd just cut from an album chart run down and Madonna's Like A Virgin was number 1 (possibly replacing Hounds of Love), so that was the reason behind the question.

I can’t stand at the end the interviewer’s attitude was kind of like…..”yeah! Whatever….next!” Like she was a no big deal artist hence Kate’s forced smile. They had no idea they were in the presence of a legendary artist. Too bad you can’t see her anywhere these days. She could have made a super comeback if she wanted to. I guess she doesn’t have the energy for it anymore. All I hope that she’s healthy and happy.
