  • I’m feeling apprehensive planting out my tomorrows as everything continues to be eaten by slugs!
This week I’m cleaning up my wonky greenhouse and making a new raised bed.
I’m trying companion planting with basil, tomatoes and marigolds.

I do like your greenhouse container for tomatoes. After a long fairly cold winter (-9F / -22C at the worst) and an unusually long cool spring, we're suddenly having very hot weather in Indiana, USA. The high temperature of 88F (31C) last week meant we could finally plant tomatoes and peppers outdoors in raised beds. Only 81F (27C) today - much hotter than it should be in May. Send us some of your rain!

You are welcome to some of our rain 😆
I’m secretly pleased we get rain as that’s what keeps the countryside so beautifully green. Then on the sunny hot days when the sky is blue, everything looks so colourful and beautiful.
Good luck with the peppers and tomatoes, they’ll taste fabulous with all your sunshine.

Get a bucket chop up nettles and brambles use like strulch all around 50 years now little damage replace often also water the roots through a pipe keeping the soil dry happy gardening Richardx

Thanks Richard, there’s plants of nettles around so I’ll give it a go. Also just bought some Strulch. Pricey but the reviews are good.

Great job with the tomato bed in the greenhouse and considering you started with an overgrown plot not a surprise the slugs are a problem. When I took over my allotment plot 4yrs ago it was a field. I covered half with black plastic and just cleared the first half. That year my experience was similar to yours; all those lovely seedlings raised by the house a gourmet meal for the slugs. Four years down the line all the beds are in with bark paths surrounding them. We are trying to stick to no dig and slowly removing the wooden sides of the raised beds and because we now have no grass or undergrowth on or around the plot the slugs have become less of a problem. Hopefully as you progress this will be the case for you also.

I always expect too much too soon, it’s not bad considering it was empty at the start of the year. At least half is now beds and woodchip paths. The rest is membrane covered and I’m hoping to expose half of that next week to get my flower beds prepped. I’m excited about that the most. I love flowers 😊

Gardening 6 months, out of season to you so it's late Autumn, have a few trees still to drop leaves am rubbish bagging them up, very happy with my vegetable garden, have a netting frame that on one bed make a 1 metre circle of compost each year line with cardboard a bag of leaves, household scraps, some weeds, coffee grounds, bag of leaves and repeat. Will be broken down by late spring, then spread and plant chard and spinach in the bed.

I’m busy gathering what I can for the compost heap. I filled a compost bin with leaves in autumn and plan to make a bigger effort this year. I’ve got a friend with a pony so plan to start collecting poop and building a dung heap too. Much better if you can make your own isn’t it.

😮 I wrote a novel and then iPad crashed 🤦🏼‍♀️.
Gist was you should be very proud of what you’ve accomplished this first allotment year. My tomatoes and onions have been eaten and my spinach has bolted 🤦🏼‍♀️. Have a marvellous week, Ali 🌥️🌧️🌧️🇨🇦

Hi Claire leave beer traps or wood for the slugs, check the wood every day and remove the slugs. 🤞🙏👍🤠

Oh no, that’ll be a lifelong battle. I have a lovely peony from my dad’s garden, been there since my childhood. It came with the bonus gift of bindweed 😕
