How to Use a Moisture Meter for Firewood Lumber

- How to use a moisture meter for measuring lumber or firewood. I just got this TopTes TS-630 pin-type moisture meter. I will learn and demonstrate how to use it. The lumber being tested is Douglas fir, milled on my Woodmizer LT15 sawmill. It and the firewood was cut from my forest land. The splitter at the firewood pile is my home made wood splitter.
The TopTes Moisture Meter contest is now over.

A person once told me, never put anything in an email you wouldn't want your mom reading. So, applying that logic, I'd say don't give her any wood you wouldn't be willing to show her the moisture content meter reading for. Or maybe you could just ignore the warnings, feed the meter to a bear, and give whatever wood you want to your mother. Just give her extra hugs as you might not get anymore for a while. Wait, what was the question again?
I don’t remember the question either. But your answer sounded good.

I had to show my wife the video that had the top of the tree blown out by aliens. I liked and I subscribed.
my moisture meter is rapping two pieces of wood together. if it clacks, it’s good to go . if it thumps, probably not. thanks for the good content.😀👍
I really like your videos and the way you talk, good information and common sense. I have been burning fire wood for about 40 years now, can tell the moisture level of it when I pick up a piece, the wet ones are heavier than the dry ones, duh! And it works for me.
That’s the only way I knew how to do it too until I recently heard of moisture meters. We are in an age where common sense is being replaced by electronics.
Love the photo bombing turkeys in the background at the end of the video!
My ground is pretty steep. Any videos for steep ground would be awesome
Hi Michael,
I’m from Scotland and right now I’m visiting Turkey on vacation with my wife and grandchildren. Like your videos especially the wood mixer it like therapy to an old retired welder.Happy thanksgiving to you all in the colonies.👍😎
Nice demo, thanks. I like burning Doug Fir too. Fun-Fact ; This winter, I tested a 2in x 2in piece of Tamarack at 14%, brought it into the house, dried it even more by sitting it on the wood stove for awhile. Retested it and my meter reading was non-detectable. - N Idaho -
-I want this -always wanted one, just never wanted to spend the money 👌🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
“I want this” I need one LOL AWESOME!!!!!
I want this....... My wife and i love your channel...
I WANT THIS, and my 51 Harley back. 👍🍻
I want this! I have a really cheap pin style, this looks much nicer. I get all my wood in slab form from a guy with a mill... Much like yours. It's all air dried
I want this.. my wife and i love your channel....
At its basic level, that is a resistance meter - as in the thing any multimeter will provide. The more water, the less resistance. A regular multimeter will do the same thing, however this meter has already done the math for what resistance means in terms of water saturation.

And I’d give that wood to my mom, for certain.
I want this. I love your channel and the work you do felling trees and winching the logs. Keep up the good work.

I want this. I started watching the channel a while back and really enjoy it

I have a cheap sawmill, and often wish I had a quality one like you have. The repairs I have to make, and the hassles of poorly designed features make sawmilling a big chore for me.
Anyway, I appreciate your videos.
Keep up the good work!
I want this ! I want to be a moisture meter ignoramus! Bugs bunny used this exact moisture meter 😮 so its gotta be the best😊
I want this... thanks a lot for the videos. Got some tree land and will probably put a lot of you videos to use.

I have also been told 20% is a good starting point, but the closer to 15 the better. Another trick I was taught if you dont have a moisture meter, for doug fir, if the bark is falling off your rounds, its ready to burn.
Enjoy the content! Thanks!

The last tractor battery I bought came with a warning not to drink the battery acid inside of it.
Phew… that was close. Was just about to mix me a cocktail. 😁

There was a turkey in the background of your video at the end. More like a cameo appearance. And no, I am not calling you a turkey... That turkey is taking its chances with Thanksgiving so close for you in the USA.
I want this. Love your humor, seen all videos. Keep going.

Thank you from one newbie to another moisture meter newbie. I really enjoy the experience and tips you share, and the beautiful environs.
After purchasing a new toy, I (usually) check the user's guide. After hitting the highlights, I then jump in trying out the device, sometimes to my detriment...
I do plan on getting a moisture meter, but it's pretty low on the priority list. The bird and bat boxes I build are too compact to allow much in warpage, and I don't build with green lumber, so medium moisture isn't generally an issue.
The Turkeys in the background (12:05 mark) are wanting in on the give-away!
Good luck to someone in the giveaway.
Cheers from a moisture-meter-less neighbor in Linn County.
I want this please!
I want this.. (round two)
Great giveaway! A moisture meter was my first firewood investment and I have used mine heartily
I want this. I am also glad you didn't check the butt end moisture level after sitting on the tailgate.
I want this ...gonna check the moisture content behind a few folks ears ....cheers
I want this ..... love the videos ...look forward to them and they are vey much apprecitated. when the the cabin build starting ?
December and January are our wettest months. Not sure I want to start in the wet weather. If it continues being droughty like the last few years I might get started if we get a good stretch of dry weather.
Was just talking to a buddy about how I could benefit from one of these! Love your content! Keep up the good work!
I want this please and thank you
I want this meter! Thanks
Hello Joe. Congratulations, the random comment selector picked you as the winner of the moisture meter. If you send me an email to wilsonforestlands@gmail.com with your shipping address, I will get that shipped to you.

Not got one of these. Over here in the UK we've recently been lumbered with a half-arsed thing called 'Woodsure' where if you sell firewood in amounts of less than 2 cubic metres, you have to lay out lots of dosh every year to be certificated that your logs are less than 20% moisture. If you contravene, you may find you're in dead lumber (lotsa trouble) and be fined. You can sell firewood in quantities over 2 cubic metres at whatever moisture content you like and you don't have to be Woodsure certified.
Over here, cut and sawn (or hewn, rarely these days) timber is... timber. Right, time I lumbered off for my tea (evening meal, no actual tea involved as I can't stand the stuff).
Hi. I want this.
I want this. I’m about to start putting 1” material in a cabin that I’m building and like you I’ve never needed a moisture meter before so that would definitely come in handy for the trim on the inside.
I want this.
Came across your channel today. I've subscribed and have been binge watching your videos. Have to say, the best and informative that I've ne across so far.
