  • Genesis is a book of fundamental importance for the Jewish and Christian faiths and has exerted a profound influence on Western Civilization. In addition to being a great religious text, it is also a literary masterpiece. We invite you to learn more by exploring Hillsdale College’s full course, “The Genesis Story: Reading Biblical Narratives.” Join us as we explore some of the work’s major narrative themes, including the complex relationship between God and man, the consequences of a rupture in that relationship, and the path toward reconciliation.

Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

I love “The Garden Song,” by Bob Bennett
    Lyrics:
I hear footsteps in the Garden
And I know the Lord is near
And He calls me by my name
    Saying, "Where are you hiding?
    Where are you hiding?
    Why do you hide?
    I miss you, my son"
    And I answered more loudly
    Than I might have done,
    "I feel naked and ashamed
    I've sinned against you Father
And I've no one but myself to blame"
And He said, "You are not naked
You are clothed in the Grace of my Son
Come and let me lead you
To where your journey will be done"
    "Why are you hiding?
    Why are you hiding?
Why do you hide from me, my son?
    Why are you hiding?
    Why are you hiding?
Why do you hide from Me
    When I love you so?"

I wonder did they really get it; get the actual big picture and the consequences of eating the fruit? Or did they really think incorrectly that their eyes would be opened and become like God? I mean was it willingly bringing on consequences they comprehended and charged on anyway, or not really getting it until making the mistake of eating fruit?

The story of Adam and Eve is a parable that illustrates the importance of protecting our children from worldly knowledge and to ensure that they are not exposed to it before they are spiritually and physically mature; you don't need to look far these days to see why this is important; our children have been the target of corruptive knowledge from day one. Adam and Eve were the first children of God to be corrupted by worldly knowledge; God is clearly telling us to protect our children

Interesting and highly revealing fact: The word "GOD" (also spelled "Gaud") literally means a deceptive artifice i.e. SIMULATION. "Gaud" also means a "trick, JEST, prank, fraud" or "deception." Both the word "dream" and "illusion" have a very similar meaning and etymology as well. A couple of highly relevant passages from the NHL elucidating the trickster-like nature of the force that runs this place: "Yaldabaoth had a multitude of faces, so that he could put a face before them all, according to his desire.."--Secret Book of John//"They alienate with simulations and appearances; they make a free person into a slave."--Gospel of Philip

Man(Adam) and woman(Eve) were made to walk with God in the garden to be in perfect union with him being partakers of the divine nature to be gods, Theosis. By eating of the fruit of the tree of good and evil, they disobeyed God. The serpent deceived them by convincing Eve and thereby Adam that they didn't have to walk with God and be in communion with him but that they could become like him instantly by eating from the tree of good and evil. This the fall. God cuts them off for disobeying his commandments, they lose the likeness of God. They were made in the image of God as we still are today but they were cut off from his likeness and this is what Christ truly restores to us, communion with God being partakers of the divine nature through Faith under the grace of the cross and the gifts of Baptism and the Eucharist on earth which is just a foretaste preparing us for Eternity. This is how I understand it from the traditional ancient church view that being Chalcedonian Christianity when the church was one. I mainly learned this from the Orthodox who claim to be the true continuation of Apostolic Chalcedonian Christianity. It is quite a different understanding of the fall of man /Christ death and resurrection i.e. salvation. It is in my opinion much different than the Protestant Reformation view of Penal Substition that Christ was penalized and damned by the Father to satisfy some kind of demands for justice by God. Very interesting video great job, Hillsdale!

    • @ThroughKinAndClan
      @ThroughKinAndClan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Big Smoke Adam and Eve did not know they were naked. There was no death and there minds were covered yet they had free will. God plainly commanded them not to eat from tree and they willingly disobeyed.

    • @ThroughKinAndClan
      @ThroughKinAndClan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Big Smoke the best I can understand it was they were one with God before they fell yet they still had free will and the capacity to make decisions yet there was no death before they disobeyed and didn't repent so there were no moral choices to make. Yet, they knew not to eat from the tree because God commanded them and warned them that they would die yet they were still innocent before they made that choice. It is confusing if you try to look at it from a western rational perspective. Not everything can be fully understood. Some things are a mystery and rationalism needing to understand all can be a detriment. I would encourage you to watch a talk from Fr Seraphim Rose on the fall of Adam and Eve from the early Christian Orthodox perspective. It is quite different than what we have learned in the West about the fall and "original sin" from the Roman Catholicism middle age developments and the Reformation.

Interesting how one can read something as nothing, another as this and slighter as that.
It could mean that he asked them because he doesn’t know where they were at. Elohim is plural.
Putting something in front of your child who knows nothing, will certainly go to it and will do what you say not to.

I do not believe in the belief of original sin; however, I believe that the genesis narrative supports original goodness, which God did not revoke. As people, we know it is immoral and wrong to hold another person accountable for the illegal activities of another person. For example, I cannot be put on trial and judged for the unrelated actions of another person. So why do people give God an out? The genesis narrative is a story of people trying to understand the human condition and told a story what they heard down through the ages. People are curious why we do the things we do for both good and ill. I don’t blame the characters Adam or Eve for the things I do, I don’t blame Satan as in, “The devil made me do it.” I take full responsibility of my actions and behaviors. My thoughts then make me curious how things could be different if Adam and Eve told the truth and took full responsibility for their actions instead of playing the blame game. I understand it’s easier to blame another person or entity on our own misdoings, and one can call them sins, than to take full responsibility and be held accountable.
