    Love the concept for this series!

    I only really know this game for its soundtrack, which I discovered through Panga's laundry basket segment from one of his level making vods, of all things. I wish Yuichi Ozaki had the opportunity to compose for more games after this, and boy do I wanna play it some day. It's one of my favourite video game soundtracks.

    It's great to get a series focusing on this. I just started looking into the GB/GBC/GBA library and especially a lot of the smaller Nintendo games that later appeared as assists, music, trophies, stickers, etc in Smash Bros.

    I can't believe I've never heard of this game. I always love learning about obscure Nintendo games! I would definitely be interested in playing it if it were rereleased in the west.

    The theme of wananbe pirates and point-and-click adventure elements makes me wonder if the devs were inspired by Monkey Island, but I don't know how known western adv games were in japan

    I'm surprised you didn't mention Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love here. Both Tingle games are pretty clear attempts to revive elements of one-off franchises that got sort of absorbed into Zelda - the first game, Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, has the dustcloud combat and bodyguard system of Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru, and Balloon Trip of Love has the party-based puzzle solving and blended action-adventure and point-and-click elements of Marvelous.

    • @NantenJex
      @NantenJex  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't actually played Trip of Love yet (I own it though). It sounds similar though based on your description, I had just never considered it to be a potential spiritual successor.

    This is an excellent concept for a series. I’ve always wondered about a lot of Nintendo’s more obscure IP’s and it’s a shame to see so many of them have sort of flown under the radar.

    Hi, there. Thanks for raising awareness of this legend.
    I've known of this beast since 2008, and did my first rom ha-- er, graphics alteration on Marvelous: Mouhitotsu no Takarajima, mostly to convert the basic non-kanji text into Romaji, and to turn that basic menu into English. All I really did was prove that this game CAN be cracked, and all it took was NOT using the popular emulator of the time, ZSNES. (It crashes/softlocks when Winky gets the keys on ZSNES.) It worked best on SNESGT in my experience, since it didn't make the ending flicker like SNES9X did.
    From there, I showed it off a bit on my TH-cam channel, and svambo noticed about 2010. (That video has been removed for reasons.) He apparently knew how to handle the text, but didn't know Japanese.
    Years later, around spring of 2012, Tashi, the guy most credited with translating the main text (and he certainly did), asked for help. Mostly, I QA'd that translation and figured out details involving the graphics, since I managed to beat that game untranslated. The only line I can say he made up was "Holy clocks, Batman!" as a way to express the fact that there were many clocks in one section. Also, in that early translation before the revision, the phrase "quite a pickle" kept popping up. I also pointed out that the name King Gingamu could mean Gingham, which made sense to me, and corrected him when he translated "bat" as "spider" when it's obviously a bat. So, yeah. QA, and translation corrections.
    Of course, other translators took on the job of finishing what Tashi started. I don't think I ever got credit, but I do have patches and notes from good ol' Tashi, and I'm willing to share them. (However, I'm not fond of the new translations' ALttP font, especially since the original font was using the double-resolution size.) Most of the new stuff is credited to DackR, if I'm not mistaken, and he did the GFX I couldn't touch.
    ...though, to be honest, all I really did in the efforts to translate this game was prove it was doable, point out that the compressed graphics (which was considered a giant hurdle at the time by rom people) were only as compressed as Super Mario World's, do some Romaji stuff, and find some unusual graphics, like "iikagennishiro!" (it was a graphic, and it translated into "get your act together") and "Benson Junior" (buried with the GFX of the gravestone). I just stopped because I was more focused on making my own games, and even some of those have been influenced by Marvelous.
    Oh, and there's a specific doorway near the very end of the game at the top floor that only Max can reach. Slightly above it (since the doorway is on the right side) is a tile that leads to a strange black void that you're not supposed to go to. I know it sounds like a creepypasta, but it's true. It even works in the unpatched version.
    So, where's the community for this game at, and where are they getting their artwork?

    • @LuigiBlood
      @LuigiBlood 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm currently updating the translation with DackR, I swapped the font with a more stylish font specifically made for this, and added a full VWF hack. This is just the beginning but things are going to make it even better and then go to BS Marvelous titles.
      I also provided rips of the early version of Marvelous's story pictures on this video and did some rips of those early assets recently dumped :)
      I could credit you now since it is based on Tashi & DackR's work.

    Man, I love this kind of content so much. The looks behind the curtains at some of the Nintendo IP frozen or lost in time makes me so nostalgic for a time period where I was discovering all kinds of content and experiences beyond what mainstream Nintendo was pushing at the time and developing love for entire video game genres and styles that I had no knowledge of beforehand. You've definitely made a subscriber out of me with this one!

    Fascinating video, & bonus points for the FE Cipher in the intro. Particularly interesting that this is where Navi Trackers came from, and it’s nice that it’s left a direct if small mark on Zelda.
    One minor question: do why know why Aonuma’s name has changed since then? Is Aonuma something like his wife’s surname?

    If you want a future idea for this series, then i would recommend checking out Sutte Hakkun (Super Famicom, Satellaview and the unreleased Game Boy and Game Boy Color versions). Really fun puzzler that becomes harder as you progress. It was also Indiezero's first project that began its prototyping phase during a game jam as a Famicom title!

      Haha, I played this game for the first time back before the full fan translation was completed and I'm pretty sure in that translation they called him Blue Bull instead of King Bull and it's always just stuck in my mind. It was only when I was looking up his theme to include in the video that I realised my mistake.

      @@DeltathRiylaan It's really good. There's actually a new translation in the works by fans to fix a few things and add lots of QOL improvements which will make the game even better. So if your curious, I'd wait for that to come out and then give it a go.
