- 1994 Porsche 968 Convertible review by The Straight Pipes. The Porsche 968 is putting down 236 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque from a 3.0L 4 cylinder. Would you take it over a new Miata or an original Boxster.

You guys should do more retro reviews !
We’d love to but they don’t get views and views pay the bills. So we throw them in whenever we can
@@TheStraightPipes doesn’t matter what you review as long as you do it right people will watch, in my humble opinion you guys could change the recipe a little bit to get back to golden era of straight pipes reviews. Cheers boys
@@TheStraightPipesfactor passion and enthusiasm into your formula :)
@@TheStraightPipes not everything is about views spiderman
@@TheStraightPipeswhat are you even talking about? The Nissan GTR 50th Anniversary vs Skyline GTR V Spec comparison video from 5 years ago has like almost 5 million views 😂😂
What are you Doug DeMuro?? 😅
Raced a 968 coupe in NASA German Touring Series about a decade ago. Very neutral handling, very stable at speed with long wheelbase. Under rated car for sure.
The Miata club would be happy to let you join our drives. We bring along Boxsters all the time, and refer to them as Miata NC 4's. And Honda S2000's as "sweet body kits."
Lmao
What about a Z3? 😂
@@aleyel-olemy3963 heck yeah the German Miata
This is so much cooler than a new 911. Thanks for reviewing it!!
This car is honestly a lot more relevant and interesting to me than a new $250K 911. I'm honestly getting really bored of car content about vehicles that only absurdly rich people will ever be able to afford, so it's refreshing to see you guys make a video about something a bit more accessible for a change.
Don’t be so honest
I’m totally in agreement with you. These are much cooler than any rich guy’s new toy.
You basically described all of Porsche enthusiasm
The 968 coupé was my dream car as a teen and I had one for a number of years in the 00's.
A truly wonderful car; have been thinking of buying one as a weekender.
It honestly must be amazing to have a job your two clearly enjoy, get to go on trips, and doing it with your best friend since high school! Love the videos, always looks great and shot well.
It’s the best
The 968 is such a hidden gem that has gained lots of attention in the last couple years...don't make it popular until I can buy a coupe with a 6-speed in this color combo! (red over tan interior) Great video!
Had a 968 Club Sport in the 1990’s over here in the uk. The 3.0 4 cly had great torque, counter balance-shafts and VANOS variable valve timing. More responsive than 944 turbo. Some of the electrics were a bit 80’s but the CS looked and drove like a smaller 928 GTS. I replaced it with a Boxster 3.2 S , which was a better car all around. Nice to see some love going to the 968
To the power of 10. ... Former '89 944S2 coupe owner of 10 years.
The 968 build quality and materials is alot better than the Boxters though.
@@pederfallbom Copy That +1 .. Ordered our old MY2000 Boxster with Full Leather covering horrible interior plastics.
That is one big-ass 4-cyl engine. THREE LITERS. The Chevy Silverado comes with a 2.7L 4-cyl.
Guards red 968 cab owner here. Jakob is wrong, it looks beautiful 😊. 993 +928 + 944 design language all mixed into one. Porsches 1st 6speed gearbox. Amazingly neutral handling, but not as light and fun as my NA miata. Gets more looks than my best friends 40th anniversary SL500. Glad you young men got to experience my college dream car ❤ #savethepopupheadlights
First variocam engine, too!
Those circle headlights is actually pretty cool imo
It makes more power than most V6's of the same displacement but with two less cylinders, that's impressive!
S2000 makes more power from a 4cyl with 50% less displacement: not that crazy.
@@jjchockey Sure but this came before the S2K. And you can make a 1-liter with 300HP if you slap a bunch of racing parts onto it, but then it wouldn't be an affordable production engine would it?
My aunt owned a new 944 S2 coupé with the same engine. So much fun to drive. I think the correct thing to say is this is what the Miata aspired to be.
This car weighs 600-700 lb more than a Miata. Nobody ever aspired for the Miata to be that heavy.
Your aunt sounds very cool!
Beautiful car. I think the convertible especially looks better. The hatchback has that signature 944 rear. On the convertible, it doesn't stand out as much. Nice color too.
987.1 owner here. I always thought these were super cool, I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw one.
986.2 owner here. I’ve always adored the 968 but have literally never seen one except for a refurbishing project at the Porsche dealership in Mechanicsburg PA. Love the 987.1 btw, that was the car I was shopping for before the 986.2 caught my eye
Averagecar.1 owner here, yeah I can't remember the last time I saw one either
@@DeadheadInABed You win the internet today according to this guy. And FWIW, I'm up in Ottawa and haven't seen a 944/968 in ON since the early 2000's (I'm 39).
Hyundai owner here. I have seen one in a while.
@@jacquesc3166"Averagecar.1" 😂😂
I've seen several of these in person at Porsche Club events and I like them. They are a bit funky and the styling isn't as nice as the coupes but that wouldn't stop me from owning one. That being said the manual convertibles are much less common as most of those were sold in the US with the Tiptronic. Definitely a very cool car. Thanks for doing this video!
The best ones were, of course, not the the one available in North America and that was the Club Sport. Which was like an RS version that was stripped down and lighter racing version. They looked great because you get them with colour matched wheels like Yellow with yellow painted wheels or Red with red painted wheels. One of the best Porsches from the 90's.
5:30 there was also a mitsubishi pajero produced up until 2021 in europe that had a 3.2L 4 cylinder with 190ish hp. Crazy discplacement for 4 cyls.
That Nissan motor would be a 6 cylinder.
Porsch-ata sounds like a decent drink at the bar
or Starbucks
nah it sounds like Porchetta! One of the most famous Italian food
Poor-chata, commonly drank in inpoverished Mexican homes
I owned it’s predecessor a 1987 944S coupe in 2007/8 when I was 19 and it was by far my fav coupe I ever owned till this day
Love these old car reviews more than the new stuff!! Keep them coming!
Would totally have this over any Miata or Boxster. So much more obscure, and better looking IMO. Plus has that very unique old school Porsche feel that the new ones just don't have.
I've owned my NA Miata since new, and am a Porschephile, so your love of the NA was nice to hear. I'm a big fan of you guys.
The biggest engine in a Sentra was the 2.5 in an SE-R. The 3.5 was a v6 in the Altima/ Maxima and almost every other Nissan product.
More older car reviews!!
Underrate for me one of the most iconic car from Porsche. Remember saw a physician had one in my home Town.
As the owner of a 1990 N.A. Miata and a 2014 991 911, I love this!!
At Radwood Philly 2023 they had a blue one with factory blue wheels, and of all the cars there that one left the greatest impression on me. Cool styling, unique, practical and Porsche badge. It struck me as an absolute S tier collectible car that nobody is interested in despite it checking all the boxes. Great videos guys.
Love these retro reviews.
Really enjoyed this; please keep doing these alternative videos as well as new car reviews; always interesting and great fun to watch you guys.
944 Turbo was my fav
944 S2 or Turbo was my fav, too. The Front line is much better for me.
Those headlights are incredible
I like retro reviews better compared to run of the mill new boring hybrid/ev/suv. Especially when you guys add the history behind the models built etc.
I absolutely love these older car reviews
13:00 Can confirm they're cup 1 rims (also very similar to the cup 2 rims), they put them on base 911's (964 & 993) most 911 owners ditch them almost immediately in favour of turbo twists (or better i.e. sexy BBS LMs)
Great car, the best of the front engine Porsche's built. Great engine and handling for it's time. These are still reasonably priced, probably $25-35K for the car in this video today. The 968 ClubSport versions however go for $70K+, while a Tiptronic cabriolet with a 100K miles will be under $20K typically.
Gotta love the 968. I’ve owned 4 968 coupes. Still have 2. Great review.
More old car reviews please guys.
Old transaxle cars are reasonably priced if you are looking to get into a Porsche. The 4 cylinder transaxle cars originated in 1976 with the 924 which evolved into the 944, then the 968. Other Porsche bargains bargains are the 986 Boxsters which are reasonably priced. Enjoyed the video.
"More enjoyable than the new BRZ" - that's really something to ponder on
One of the older tenured teachers in my high school in the 90s had one of these. Awesome car.
One of my favorite Porsches. James Woods drove one of these in The Specialist.
The B13 Sentra from 2002-2006 came with a 2.5 as the larger displacement option. was a little truck motor! blew my mind to hear this was a 3 litre. i had a 2004 SE-R Spec V and loved that thing, although it rotted out over time as a Quebec car that came to Sask and got a-salt-ed to death, RIP.
The world needs more retro reviews. Please do a 22b next!
Porsche asked you to drive a 968? Interesting. Can they make another?
The 968 CONV license plate is perfect! Love the discreet personalised plate.
It’s not discreet at all tho. The car says 968 on the back and you can see it’s a convertible. I know Porsche owns this car but I’ve seen so many Porsches with plates like this and it’s like good for you you paid extra money to repeat what it already says on your car. Cool.
It’s not discreet tho, it literally says 968 on the back and you can see it’s a convertible. It’s paying extra money to personalize your plate but you couldn’t think of anything clever so you said “I know! I’ll repeat the same thing the car says!” So many Porsche people do this, it’s wild.
I’ve owned my 968 cab for nine years, fantastic car, a head turner where ever I go. I also own a Miata of the same year, and there is little comparison between the two. The 968 is larger, quicker, and a totally different ride feel.
There was also the 300ZX convertible that could be thrown into its of-era mix. Either way, both are quite rare. I've only seen one 968 Convertible in my memory, and the 968 seems rare on its own. The 944 really took the cake for this platform, as it really hit a lot of the 1980's boxes.
People disliked these cars as a replacement for the 944 in the early 90's. Guess now it's a collector's item... 🤣
968 coupe is my pre-2k favorite. Awesome review
Love the older car reviews!
No Sentra had a 3.5L 4cyl. The Altima and maxima had a 3.5 v6
The Sentra actually had the 2.5L from the Altima in the SE-R, the largest production four cylinder (gasoline) engine record after the Porsche 3.0L would actually be held by Toyota's 2TR-FE 2.7L NA (2693cc) and the GM L3B 2.7L Turbo (2727cc)
Man that thing is gorgeous, perfect condition ! How could someone keep it in showroom condition for 30 years while actually driving it ! 😮😊
My 1987 8V 944 had the same stock rev limit of 6500 rpm. However, with an aftermarket performance chip upgrade, it went tro 7500 rpm on premium gas with the stock valve springs with a much improved midrange torque curve. It would outoull V8 Mustangs of the day. With an added fuel ionizer, it achieved a zero emissions status and 34mpg highway economy (37mpg with a particular fuel additive). These mods were done in 1990 and were never published.
No, these 16‘ wheels were not on 911s. And these here were not called cup wheels. Cup wheels were 17‘ and were available as an option. However, the 17‘ cup wheels were also mounted on 911s. By the way: the mirrors are called „cup mirrors“ and were both mounted on 968s and 911s (and Audi RS2s)
Yeah my dad bought one of those new. My sister puked in it the first time we went to dinner in. He still has it.
little bit heavier than a miata tho. I've had a 944s, 944 turbo, and a 944s2 convertible- they used to be pretty cheap! I paid $3000 for the 944S, $5000 for the turbo, $3500 for the S2 ;)
they handle really well, good weight distribution with the transaxle. Good cars for LS swaps, too- turbo clutch can handle the torque, and the aluminum block LS weighs about the same as the iron block porsche 4.
More of this please!!! How about 914 drive!?!
I know this won't do well by algorithm, but really enjoyed it. Hope more people give you old vehicles to test.
I always loved the 968!
I begged for a Jaguar XKR convertible review, got this instead. Can't complain though. Good review!
Sentra was a 2.5
Oh ya
One of my favorite Porsche!
What do you guys think of the Nardone 928 restomod?
Very cool but unfortunately costs half a million euros
This is a way cooler video than the new porsche
The guy at the store said Yuri was the only guy he’s ever seen pull it off.
Bruh😂
Only a bit more than 12000 968:s built in total in a 4 year lifespan. Rare car indeed.
that carplay was so clean
Love this car
The T-Bird analogy is something I thought about on first seeing the car. There is one in the next town from me, also in red. I have a '16 MX-5, not the same, but the MX-5 is a lighter, smaller car.
Nissan Sentra had a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder. You're likely mixing that up with the available 3.5 liter V6, the VQ.
Yes
Big difference between the 968 and the gen 1 Miata is that my 6' frame fit in the 698 a lot better than a Miata and I have better sight lines.
Very cool car and agree that the coupe looks much better. I'd still prefer a 944 Turbo, but these are cool. So much more character than any new Porsche not named Cayman.
One of the largest NA inline 4s ever produced if I’m not mistaken.
I see what Yuri is talking about, sl500 does look a little like it imo :) nice review!
I came close to buying a 968 cabrio about 25 years ago. Kind of wish I had.
1999 Toyota celica vibes 👀 2:44
Not sure I’d promote people smoking. Regarding the car the thing people need to consider is the price of ownership. Porsche parts and work are expensive as heck. You’d be better off spending the same money for a modern Miata tbh. But I do love the look of these cars and the headlights are indisputably cool.
The sentra never got a 3.5 four cylinder. This is the second largest 4 cylinder ever put in a modern car, largest was a 3.2 available in the first gen pontiqc tempest (though it only had 110 HP and literally was just one half of the 6.4 V8.
You guys should try to get a review of that Thunderbird! Dont see many of them around.
I'm a Porsche fan, but still. If I were choosing between this and a new ND--for similar money--I would pick the Mazda.
Looooooove love love retro reviews and frog eye parsh 🐸
..need a 928 on this channel .. with a 5 spd dog leg... there is a GT in Vaughn...
I like these, you guys should do more non new car reviews.
968 Coupe is my favorite Prosche
There is a white 968 cab in my neighbourhood. Great shape, but not very attractive to my eyes. I would love this guards red /cashmere colour combo in a coupe... I would buy that car!
968 is a sweet ride
Nissan sentra SE-R had a 2.5L 4cyl with optional 6 speed manual putting out close to 200hp
Nice G shock there Jacob!
What a nice treat.
I'm nothing of a NA Miata fan, as I'm the NB2 fanboy, but man, the NA looks so much better and coherent than this.
i was going to say i had never seen a 4 banger above 2.8 and come to find out there’s only been one the misubishi pajero
I used to think these were kinda ugly, preferring the harder 80s angles of the 944, but they're growing on me now.
EDIT: Also, fun fact, the 944 Turbo is the first production vehicle to offer airbags as standard equipment, starting in 1987. @9:59
Early Lancer Ralliarts had NA 2.4L 4G69 engine. I daily one, they rip
As a 986 S owner, I approve
Well, that was different. Very passive-aggressive. As a Porsche guy, it aggravated me to hear the 968 compared to a Miata. Yet there were some great comments made about its build quality and driving dynamics, all good to hear. Yes, the coupe is more attractive. The cabrio built upon the group of 944 enthusiasts that liked the final two years of the 944 that finally offered a cab version. This, along with the 928 sadly died in 1995. The 986 Boxster came along and boom, major cash flow and Porsche is what it is today because that money helped spawn the 955 Cayenne! A success story for a company that almost filed bankruptcy due to a recession, a war and a weak dollar! Btw, the 1987 944 was the first Porsche (I believe the first passenger vehicle) to offer an airbag. It was driver’s side only!! I’m looking forward to more Porsche Classic reviews…a Miata? Come on. An SL, ok. Same ballpark at least. 😊
My NA Miata would crush this through cliche corner 😜
The 924 thru 968 are my favorite Porsche’s. So obviously I’m not a real Porsche guy.
Wow my first car was a 1982 2.8L V6 Camaro
