I'm glad I found this video. When I started out playing hockey I was a forward for my first 2 years in peewee and bantam. In my 2nd year of bantams, I became a defenseman. 2 on 1s and 3 on 1s actually came easy to me, because without really knowing it, I would do this, but then my coaches started telling me to take one or the other, that didn't work at all. I knew it didn't feel right when I would do that. But this helped me to correct that again and spot some mistakes like not being fully aggressive.

Exactly, it is all about timing and deception. Keep working on it, it will get easier as you study and practice it more.

great strategy... but toward the end, that play board looked like someone beat a pinata on the ice.

Thanks for the video. I am always the lone defense man and am faced with these situations all of the time. This sure helped me

Pretty much all you said was what I was taught in peewee hockey. Good stuff, it doesn't get any more simple than this. It just gets more critical you do these small things at the NHL level, I see it quite often. Sometimes a young defense men over plays the shooter and leaves all kinds of lanes open and boom its in the net within a split second.

Well, if someone taught you how to understand to move laterally and push the puck carrier wide and cross back over quickly to take away the pass and use your stick properly....you had a hell of a hockey coach in peewees.
You are right though, it is about the fundamentals and doing them properly. The higher up you get, the more coaches stress fundamentals....funny now that works.

Excellent video. I play in an adult rec league and these tips help a lot. Also, you speak in a way that keeps my attention.

So, you actually respond to comments! Very cool.
I seem to remember when I was playing having coaches talk about playing the strong side post. I like what you are saying because it provides a lot of activity and room to adapt to each situation. I strongly believe that in the end that is the best mindset and strategy. Yet, I have a question that tries to squeeze an answer out of a complex situation that changes play-to-play.
I guess the question is whether or not you would start from a more strong side or more middle or more weak side position up in the high slot (maybe even above the tops of the circles) as compared to where you would end up as you reach the hash marks/ the low slot.
In other words, would you say that you trend more from strong side too weak side or middle lane as you progress backward, or would you say you trend more from middle to strong side at all as you progress backward?
Would you say that as a whole you progress/ trend laterally in any visible pattern if you were to consider the ice split into thirds lengthwise?
I understand the nature of the last second attack. That makes total sense. However, aside from the bouncing back-and-forth to confuse and complicate things for your opponent, is there any cheating or favoring to the strong side or weak side prior to that final moment of truth?
My assumption is that if you say favor the strong side more that the defenseman would trend from strong side toward the middle as the play progresses lower. If you say to favor the weak side, my assumption would be to trend from the weak side more toward the middle as the play progresses lower into the slot.
Your video touched on a lot of important, often overlooked considerations on a 2 on 1. It was excellent! Thank you 👌

Excellent question, this is an older video, we'll be making an updated one soon but the points in this video are still very valid.
To answer your question, you have to base your decision on the puck carriers position on the ice.
Every 2 on 1 situation will be different. If the puck carrier is outside the dots, I'm going to start cheating back to the weak side and take away the pass, but I WON'T telegraph that and let him cut to the middle, I want to force the shot from the outside.
If the puck carrier is on his off-hand (puck to the middle of the rink) and he's inside the dot or starting to move to the middle of the ice, I'm going to cheat to take away the pass but then pressure the puck carrier quickly and either try to poke check or deflect the shot on his release. My goal would be to try and "Bait" him into shooting and then quickly get my stick right in his release point as he is shooting to deflect the puck. That's a harder situation but you can't let the guy walk down the middle of the ice and shoot.
There is not a one answer fits all because it depends on how much of a threat the puck carrier is to score. You don't want to allow a shot from the middle of the rink in a goal scoring area and have the guy snipe while you are taking away the pass.
      Hopefully that helps.

I like to be in the middle then if they pass quickly go on my stomach and steal the pass good when it works looks really stupid if they score
