But if the company doesn't apply for one , and put patent pending on it , then another company could steal the design and functionality of the item and produce it themselves or steal it and patent it themselves . It's a legal thing that protects the company and the creators ideas and design , kind of like a copyright on a book or song .

The reason it's cool if it has pat pending is because as more toys are released and when the patent is approved , the later ones will say pat no. And have a number following for the approved patent , but the ones that say patent pending could gain more worth with time to collectors and resell value because they are early releases of the toy . Doesn't mean that will happen but it's possible and I can't say if there are later releases of these for sure or the signature series that have the approved patent number instead of pat Pending , because I haven't seen them all . I remember when i bought that exact buzz for about 25 on ebay(pat pending model too!),mines missing the back piece, and front od the helmet.
