  • VIDEO: A 90-minute stint in the late evening at West Byfleet station, on the South Western Main Line, featuring South Western Railway class 158s, class 159s, class 444s, class 450s and class 455s, plus a class 701 on an empty stock movement and a special GB Railfreight class 66.
West Byfleet station was first opened on 1 December 1887 as "Byfleet and Woodham", both nearby villages from medieval times. The station was renamed to, simply, "Byfleet" in 1913. West Byfleet, the village, didn't come into existence until a parish was established there in 1917, however, the station wouldn't change its name to this until 1950.
In December 1946, the station was the scene of a derailment which involved a Bournemouth to London express derailing at over 60 mph however, despite this, only three passengers suffered minor injuries and there were no fatalities.
Nowadays, the village is part of the larger borough of Woking, Surrey and is served by four trains per hour; two to Woking and two to Alton with Alton trains running semi-fast to/from London Waterloo. Similar to Weybridge, you get a good frequency of services running through, albeit from just the one operator, with the odd freight train here and there.
