This is the real old school cruiser engine. The 90hp version was the most durable. My friend had a B5 Passat with this engine, their family bought it brand new back on 1997. He sold it about 4 years ago with 660K (that is 410K miles) on the clock, still ran solid. Unfortunately VW realized that if they will keep building engines like that they will go bust.
My father died at the age of nearly 90 on the 18th of January 2022. The car he loved was his SKoda Octavia diesel Estate from April 2002.( now 20 years old) I've not driven it in years but did so yesterday. The engine sounds fine and there is barely a rattle in the bodywork. I was amazed. A profoundly solid car. I'd like to keep it, but have my 2017 Berlingo which is more practical.
I've driven the car a few times more, for some reason for years the grille design reminds me of the now defunct Rover cars. And a nearly 20 year old SKODA Octavia one must drive like a gentleman, calmly and with respect. The Skoda diesel engine from2002 sounds more relaxed then my 2017 Citroen Berlingo diesel.......But that is partly all the pollution controls added since then like AdBlue.
A great immortal car .. I got into this many times because this car was the legendary no 1 taxi 15 years ago.. I could still drive this legend with plenty of pleasure .. excellent classic clutch driving.. thank you
These were very popular in Barbados. Sad that many have been scraped and not too many new ones have hit our shores. Too many people just don't know how to take care of good cars in general.

In 2012 i buy golf 4 which the same motor. Now my father 75year Old ,have skoda octavia 1.9tdi 90km. He drive which short distance about 7km. This car is comsumption 6.0l/100km. It's best car for him.
Same , I needed a big car so i got the cheapest vw sharan 1.9tdi 130horse 96kw. 1-2nd gear not fast but from 3rd gear up i really feel the torque. I never had a diesel before

1.9 TDI engines are tough you regularly see them with 500k or even 1 million kilometres on them because they are under stressed engines
