- Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad have traveled to the Mushroom Woods during the winter season to visit Princess Toadstool's sick grandmother. To deal with the cold weather, Mario, Luigi and Princess Toadstool are wearing earmuffs, a scarf and a red hood respectively. However, Mario remarks that King Koopa has his own agenda, which will assumedly provide problems for them down the road.

Maybe her grandmother was a queen consort meaning that while she was queen of the mushroom kingdom her husband Princess Toadstools grandfather was the official ruler of the kingdom and when he died and their son or daughter Princess Toadstools mother or father inherited the throne her grandmother retired and settled in her current home but still continued to be involved in her granddaughters life thus explaining how she was her grandmother and was still royalty but still lived in the home that she currently lives in.
