  • The sister of Lucy Stephenson, the wife of the house, was invited to a ball. She has agreed to take her nieces along. For this special occasion she has hired the renowned French hairdresser Madame Du Hare who is currently traveling through the U.S.

She is . And is it kinda odd that I like the maid's outfit and hair better than the outfits and hair of the actual people going to the ball ? Like that puffy sleeved bright blue dress is something I can see myself wearing on a day out , along with the simple low bun . The oldest noblewoman's gown looks like my gran's nightgown and the middle girl's shawl and dress combo reminds me of when I was a kid and played dress up in my mum's old dresses .

I am probably one of the few who liked the inclusion of Madame Du Hare. If she were real, I would have hated her but this fictional person is so fun to watch. The actress was so full of pomp and snotty pride. It was hilarious. Please tell the lady that I thought she did a wonderful job. I also like the slight indistinct eye roll from the maid. I would have done the same. The lady of the house with her soft pink and ribbon in her hair looked so feminine and pretty.

Yes but she wouldn't have been well pleased with that hair do!.

I’m obsessed with your content! I live on the east coast (new England) and we frequent the Newport Mansions in Newport Rhode Island. My favorite since I was a kid (and if you’ve been or look it up you can see why!) is The Breakers. Built and owned by the Vanderbilt’s in the late 1800’s…that’s what I think of while watching. They were obviously very wealthy but there must be similarities! There are MANY homes in my area also that are from as far back as 1600’s, and I’ve always been fascinated by thinking what it was like when those homes were new. This is perfect for those daydreams! Thank you!

I do miss one detail: gloves! I think that they certainly would have been present at that time, especially to go to a ball ;). Oh and a bonnet and maybe a coat to leave the house :). But apart from that, well done on the video!

The acting is fantastic! The realism is so period correct with the hairstyles and clothing. The children are so well mannered and behaved. Im not that old but we behaved like that, as the old saying went, “you should be seen and not heard” said our parents to us. In the 1800’s, people really knew the meaning of love, honor, duty, and respect. Unlike the present times. The Amish still maintain most of these traditions. I grew up a mennonite and the Amish were all in our community. Thanks for making these videos. Well done! People wonder why times have changed so much? Most people today are absent of faith and love of God, have no sense of duty, worship only material things and themselves.

For some strange reason, my mind has wandered into how long it would have taken ladies to prepare for a ball. I'm assuming weeks because they had to post letters to Madame Du Hare to set an appointment, purchase and receive or sew their dresses...I've literally jumped into a hare hole. LOL Justine, thank you for this wonderful channel. I'm absolutely fascinated with it.

Like photography invented 1830s but became quite popular later in 1860 and 1870. So was with telegraph, invented in 1835. Became popular in 1850s. Telephone invented in 1880s. Cars invented in 1880s. Yes the back fastening now with hooks and eyes has remained on the modern bra but the old fashioned stays still had a gentle allure. There was a great debate about what kept this period bust in order when they adapted Pride and Prejudice for TV. People really fell out if that's the operative word about whether the girls wore.stays or if something like a bra was around long before Mary Phelps Jacob. Its a very heated debate in certain quarters because some people think they can see brassieres in prototype on Roman mosaics from long long ago. But in answer to that there are certain stained glass windows showing a bicycle and others say that batteries have been discovered in the Pyramids. One could go on forever but to end on a happy note I liked this video a lot and appreciate all the grace of seeing one laced in such fashion. Watch the newest version of The Thirty Nine Steps to reinforce the idea that stays are as provocative a sight as a lady undoes as anything Berlei or Playtex sells her.

Watching this..I now know I'd be a pretty crappy maid!🤣(previous housekeeper speaking too) The hair dresser, or whatever she is, shoving her bag into my body/hands, so rudely?! That would go flying just as quick as it came to me!✌🤪

This is how the rich ladies got dressed for a ball back then. I doubt the normal people got dressed up like this, like in the little villages/colonies and stuff. It's cool to see how the rich ladies did it though. I wonder how the poor ladies dressed also.

This video succinctly demonstrates why I, as a man with curly hair, *hate* curling my bangs and, well, the rest of my hair.
