    I had a friend that worked at the Anheuser-Busch stables and cared for the Clydesdales. She invited me to visit, and I took her up on it. She invited me into a stall that was occupied by one of the lead horses. He was just huge. Absolutely immense. The horse was facing in, with his face stuck in a food trough thingy. She tells me to come in, along the side of the horse, and come up to where his head was. As I tentatively walk along the stall wall, the horse shifts himself and rests his huge body against me, literally pinning me to the wall. But....totally gently - I never felt any real pressure at all. I just couldn't move because a 2000 lb horse didn't want me to. My friend starts laughing, because this is apparently his way of saying hello to visitors. He kept me pinned there for a short bit, and then leaned away and we enjoyed a lovely visit with the most gentle giant I have ever seen. I'm a big guy, and I felt very puny for a long time.

    You know until a foal is weened, they're almost impossible to separate from their mother. I had a mare that I would take out for a ride once and a while, and you just had to let the baby trail along side. And in another instance we had to separate a foal from it's mom for a medical check, and I literally saw the mare fling herself into a barbed wire fence to try and get to her baby. So if mom is performer, I guess this frisky little guy is just going to have to be an added attraction for a while.

    • @ShadowKaiserin
      @ShadowKaiserin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +112

      More accurately, it's about the size of a pony. "Standard horses" stand above 14.2 hands tall(about 4.8 feet) at the withers(the hump at the base of the neck just above the horse's shoulder blades). Most horses are well above that, somewhere between 15 and 16 hands, whereas draft horses tend to be anywhere between 17 and 20. That baby, compared to the humans running beside it, appears to be around 13 hands, maybe a little taller. Still big for a foal!

      @Bendigo1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Years ago, I was invited to meet one of the Clydesdales at a farm near St. Louis. This horse was named Seamus and was not part of the team, but stayed at one of the breeding farms. His head had to have been about 4 feet long and he was about as wide across his belly as a picnic table. I remember standing in the stall with him perfectly relaxed and engaging. He stepped on my foot with one of his (about as wide as a dinner plate) and put the slightest pressure on mine before he immediately lifted off. A remarkable afternoon.

      I think they just let a little weanling out in the ring. My guess is they are all geldings like the Budweiser Clydesdales.
      To qualify for one of the hitches, a Budweiser Clydesdale must be a gelding with an even temperament and strong, draft horse appearance,[4] be at least four years old, stand at least 18 hands (72 inches, 183 cm) at the withers when fully mature, and weigh between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds (820 and 1,040 kg). In addition, each horse must be bay in color (a reddish-brown coat with a black mane and tail), have four white stocking feet, and a blaze of white on the face.[8]

    Back in Virginia, I owned a Shire/TB cross, 18.1 hands and weighing in at around 2000 lbs (honestly, I think it was around 2200, but that was in the summer when he was eating for all he was worth). He had all the poise and grace of a Clydesdale with the barrel and sleekness of a TB....massive hooves (I think they were a size 8 and were literally the size of pie plates. I still have several of his old shoes that I've cleaned up and use as door decorations). Caesar had the kindest and gentlest of spirits. I remember one time, I had been away in Spain riding for a month and when I came back, he had lost some weight and fitness. As I girthed Caesar up, I noticed he had lost some weight and I made a mental note to check the girth and maybe take it up another notch of two if necessary once I was mounted in the ring. Well, I forgot. Now, the other thing I forgot was how sharply he turned. You had to apply full inside leg to keep him from falling in to the inside when you had him on a circle (so much inside leg that I actually herniated myself once). So I hopped up on Caesar (hence my screen name "CaesarInVa", btw) and we began our warm up. I completely forgot to check his girth. After we were both warmed up, I put him on a 20-meter circle at the canter. Off we went but when I gave him a little inside reign to keep him on the circle, he turned sharply to the inside. No big deal, I thought as I set my weight on the outside stirrup....then the saddle shifted, about 30 degrees, and off I went doing my best "Superman" imitation. As I sailed past Caeser, we looked each other in the eye. He looked at me as if to say "Dude, what are you doing out there???". So I hit the dirt (thankfully it was late Spring and the ground was nice and soft). I got up madder than a wet hen. Caesar, in the meanwhile, had stopped dead in his tracks right beside me, no panicking or running off. I started to give him a good swat with my crop when I realized it was ALL on me. I had forgotten to check his girth and my oversight had caused the entire mishap. What amazed me was how quietly he stood there. He knew something was wrong and stayed right beside me. God bless him. I had to sell Caesar 5 years ago when my wife and I relocated down to Texas (the heat down here in Houston would have killed him. Lord knows, its nearly killed me a couple times) and I miss him terribly. I remember going over a 3 board fence with him one crisp autumn morning when I was out riding pre-hunt season with some friends from the Middleburg Hunt. He SOARED over the fence in a beautiful rocking-horse canter. I swear I could feel the earth rumbling beneath us as we cantered up to the fence and all the other riders just sat there looking at us dumbfounded. They had never seen anything so big move so beautifully before.

      Your comment sent me on a trip down memory lane. Dolly, Streaker and Keno were my horses growing up. Keno was the last one I lost. He was an off the track quarter horse so he was pretty fast and not "ranch broke" at all. (My grandpa originally bought him and he later became mine.) Of course my dad refused to let my 10-12 year old self ride him. BUT my dad was a fireman and worked 24 hours on/48 off. So...every third day you know what I was doing lol. I would ride Keno down the dirt road to a nice straight spot with no driveways (for him to randomly decide to turn down at top speed lol). I had to hold him back the whole way as he pranced sideways wanting to run. Once down the road I would turn him around and let him go (wow still gives me goosebumps). My dream at the time was to be the first female jockey to win the Kentucky Derby 😄

      @@justsayin4984 , Dang sounds like you had a great time!! I would have loved to have that childhood with a beloved horse. Color me jealous...and now you have horses as an adult, so lucky! Enjoy those sweet horses, and enjoy the memory of those who have passed on, they are special no doubt cherished memories. I did a bit of western trail riding when I was around 23 with one of my work friends and her sister, they had three horses, they put me on "the gentle one" (his name escapes my 55 year old brain), I remember being scared to death when Victoria had her horse bolted around a corner in the trail and mine started galloping to keep up...FREAKED ME OUT!!! I swear I was shaking when I got off that horse. 😰 Horses are beautiful creatures but the power of them is both awe inspiring and a bit scary at times.

    When I was a kid in grade school in Chicago I was standing in front of my house and the Clydesdale Horses and wagon came down our street We were really excited I have no idea why they came down such a small street but we did have a horse barn about a mile away that rented horses but I doubt they were going their, I never saw them again.

    I was a stable girl when I was younger loved every minute of it, even the mucking out, Tony who owned the stables gave us a free full day a fortnight, but the horses I looked after was nowhere near as big as these, what I would give to ride one of these, and the young one is so gorgeous, and boystrous I'm now 69 and still live for horses, always will
