Don't let those trolls get to you RJ, I think it kind of comes with the turf, your subscriber base speaks volumes about what people really think......and welcome the wonderful world of the GS, I am forced to agree with you, I too have several bikes of different types, but the GS is the one that can do it all and do it all extremely well - I've yet to find a better all rounder. Lovin' your work as ever RJ, do keep it up....all the best - TMF
that's why i like you RJ, you just give your opinion on things and not sponsored by anyone 500k subscribers and not a single ad on your videos! yo da best
Don't let one internet warrior get to you RJ. We all know your passion for bikes and your opinion isn't for sale. We just watched you ride across Africa on one of those bikes, that alone speaks volumes. I would looooooove to have a GS but it's just not in the budget right now.
Just cuz we barely see it doesn't mean he doesn't ride it. And fairs fair, he has other nakeds. There's a reason he got the S1000R over the Duke first time round
I rode a GS for a couple of days whilst my RR was having a service. Did I like it? Yes - but it wasn't perfect. The speedo was hard to just glance at; I found myself having to take a second look at it to read the indicated speed properly (and my eyes are fine btw). Wind blast was loud considering the tall screen and in town I actually found it too big for day to day riding. I guess the wider dual carriageway roads of London favour it better than the smaller lanes we have here in Southampton. However... On longer journeys and two-up it was sublime. The electronics are incredible - Heated grips, cruise control, up/down quickshifter, traction control, ABS - all make riding easier, more enjoyable and safer. And 300 miles on a tank, you'd forget what a fuel station looks like after going that long without filling up. Would I buy a 2016 GS? No. Would I buy a GS in the future? I wouldn't rule it out.
I've had my GS for 7 years now and go everywhere on it! Its always sounds like a complete farce when you tell folks they really can do everything on it! and yes a dedicated bikes to road or off road or touring can be much much better at their task in hand. All I know is i can potter down small lanes all day long easily and at the end of the day when i'm 100 miles from home the Gs will scurry home at an indecent rate of knots and that'll do for me. Biking is to personal a thing for everyone to agree on anything so as long as you're out riding what the fuck does it matter
Don't get angry with all those haters. Thank you for your motocycle passion. You are lucky to have all thèse bikes and they are simply jealous. Take care and thank you !!!
Magic bike. I was a sceptic in the beginning too, I now own the 2017 1200 GSA, and never looked back. It is the worlds best bike. Those who hate it, have never ridden it, or have not owned one.
I'm a GS owner and I just love it to bits... even her being a bit older (2008) it's just good at everything as you said. it has such a great balance that even being a small guy, I have no problems riding her (1.7m/5'7" and 60kg/130lb). I encourage you to get the new GS, I'll be pretty jealous of that RJ!
saw it had the Anakee 3 tires on this bike. I put a set on my 2009 R1200 and they lasted about 16,000 miles with me touring and commuting 100% on it back then. Man, what a bike! 45 to 50 or 55 miles per gallon, tires that last almost as long as the set on my first bike, a CBR250R. I was never dissapointed with its capabilities.
I appreciate the honest reviews you give, people that say you sound like an advert have no Idea that you do the reviews for us not the bike company's. RSM8
RJ, this was exactly what I needed at the perfect time. I was just making my mind up about a new bike (GS1200 vs. KTM super adventure) and I was concerned about the agile nature of the GS. I knew you'd show it in it's TRUE light. As it turns out, I chose the KTM (and love it) but I know I could have gone either way and been happy! Thanks again for all the great videos!!! Cheers buddy!
I have probably commented twice on TH-cam in 6 years. Suffice to say you tell it like it is and don't pander to sponsers + I love your vids. You are not chasing hits - ignore detractors...
But it's so boring compared to the KTM, plus BMW's aren't as reliable as people seem to think, especially the GS's, lots of issues with the switchgear for example, plus you can remove the clocks without any tools which would be a big deal for London where bike thieves looooove to steal GS's.
Yeah, this GS are full of problems but owners won't tell you because they're too proud of they're 18k € bike. A friend of mine was overtaking a car and the ECU cut off the power (to prevent damages because there was another problem with the engine) and he almost got squashed by the incoming car in the opposite lane. Then he brought the GS to a BMW dealer and they give him a loaner car (not another motorcycle) because for them cars and bikes are the same WTF.
RJ I left a comment on one of your other videos from the Africa tour. You are sounding the same as me when I took the GS out for the first time. They are superb.
Hi RJ. Hypothetically speaking, if you owned the r1200gs would you have changed the exhaust like you've done on Nuda? It doesnt sound that bad with the original exhaust, but still missing that little extra. What's your thoughts on that?would you change anything?
The GS(A) is indeed the best grab-and-go travelling bike. I love the S1000xr's engine more, but the flattwin handles way much better especially in tight turns. For me, the best bike to ride 1500+km to the Alps/ Pyrenees and still having a blast when arriving.
For me that is the most beautiful bike I've ever seen. I'm thinking about the G310GS as my first bike but I don't know how realiable a cheap BMW could be Cheers
Before getting my license I thought I would have gotten a sport or naked bike. But, ended up getting a Transalp 600 and love the fact I can go anywhere on it. Took it off road a couple times already with the road tyres and she didn't struggle. Love adventure bikes now. Have you tried to KTM 1290 adventure bike?
If I remember correctly, when test riding the KTM you said it was similar to the Nuda and that's why you wouldn't buy it... until the Nuda got stolen... I'm very interested to see the mods you would do to the GS. Akra is a given, and I've seen some GSs with carbon bits...
I went from 'old' GS to a new GSA in April, then a new S1000R Sport a month later and am about to go back to a new GS! 3rd time lucky I hope! Mid life crisis! :-)
The shift assist pro, not totally in love with it on my bike, it's just o.k. Downshifts work very smoothly with the throttle closed, I haven't found a trick otherwise and they can be kind of jumpy. Up it works great under mid to hard accel, not great at lower throttle openings. The clutch feels very nice otherwise. I didn't get the keyless due to some people having issues with it, principally getting the fuel cap open if it is acting up. The GS/Adventure though, just consider, the giant fuel tank is pretty great, just a lazy option that takes the edge off watching the gas level. The giant tank also gives a bit more wind/weather coverage. Also the integrated racks and engine protection with the A is pretty nice as a package (easily done aftermarket too). The BMW "Adventure" luggage is nicely made and integrated with the key as well, another GS/A advantage, though it is pricey stuff. The panniers are top-opening, which I just like better than the Vario model side opening. One last little thing, don't use the kill switch, they've had some dumb issue in quality control with the start/kill switch wearing easily. Use the key or the off button for keyless instead, just to avoid wear on the kill switch. It gets stuck 'on' and hangs up the starter evidently. Hopefully they come out with a sturdier switch at some point. I knew you would come back and jump on one, from the way you were talking about it on your trip. I'm still breaking mine in but it's the best bike I've ever owned, I just love it.
Greetings from Sweden, just wanna tell you that your videos inspired me to get into motorcycle driving. At the moment I've got a honda XR125, as a starter. Great vids by the way, keep 'em coming :)
Hey, I have one question, maybe it´s too private for you, but I would be happy to know what you do for living? I mean all of these bikes cost alot (insurance, gas, service) except the grom :D Thank you. Greetings from Germany.
Dies das Ananas hey I asked this before, his insurance is multi insurance so it's actually quite cheap compared to what you'd expect but running cost my guess would probably be the most expensive aswell as servicing and mots but you can only really ride one at the time so gas/fuel wouldn't be a problem
Honestly think you should get rid of the SMR and get the GS1200. I'm not sure about your usage, but I rarely see it in videos, and for the most part, it's concrete where you ride. I might be wrong though :)
he doesn't show the smr much because he like to be a hooilgan on it too much and wheelies everywhere so he dosen't want to get in trouble through youtube by posting up that kind of content plus its just a fun little hoon bike for those times you just wanna hoon the big ktm offers a similar experience to the s1000r or the nuda so I'd sell the ktm even though it a beautiful bike with a monster motor it's a bit more serious and demands respect when riding it rather than a playful little 500cc single supermoto which you can just rag the fuck out of everywhere and not have to worry about it biting your head off.
plus if he sell the smr he has to front extra money on top where as if he sells the ktm it will more or less pay for the 1200 gs so its the right thing to do in a business sense too.
Hey RJ. Could you please do a test ride on the BMW R Ninet Scrambler, I really loved your test ride with the BMW R Ninet and would love you insight on the Scrambler. Yours Tim
If I were you RJ I can't believe I'm saying this but out of the 2 choices I'd sell the ktm 1290 super duke to make room for the gs 1200 because then you still got the super naked with the s1000r and you will still have the ultimate-motard with the Nuda and the fun little supermoto with the smr511 the practical town bike the grom and the beautiful old 2 stroke enduros with the dt's. Then I think you could run for the most perfect bike garage lineup.
The gear shift assist on the GS didn't work too well for me. Among other things I got a false neutral when downshifting while coming in hot into a hairpin on a steep road. Not that brilliant. :)
+The Incredible Sulk Hello The Incredible Sulk, If I was him, I will never forget MV Agusta. I have no problem paying such a huge mount of money for the bike (because how unique it is) but You better treat me like I deserve, not just as "another regular guy" and more important, respect me and take the time to attend, because I'm paying +12,000 EUR and the Customer Service and people at the dealership are totally d*ckheads. This is based not only in my experience, but among others how suffer the same experience. Best Regards.
In my opinion the gear shifts seem to be rather "clunky" if you will. At least from 1st to 2nd. Kinda a downside but then not a real deal breaker for most.
lol, "you can bugger off" say what you think mate! unfortunately we now live in a world where your opinion can generate so much hate, I don't even ride or like motorbikes, but you sir, are awesome :) keep making great videos and f**k the haters
If I was in your place, I'd swap the SMR for the R1200GS. The SMR isn't useless, but it's not really made for long rides and it's pretty maintenance intesive, ontop of that I very rarely see you do videos on the SMR. You probably still ride it but the KTM appears more often. But the R1200GS is expensive man and if you get a GS you got to get it with all the bells and whistles as far as I know and then there's soo many accessories you can throw at it!
I think your summary explains perfectly why this is such a popular bike, I really like your video too. I especially like that you speak your mind! You can filter very well too, lol ride safe cheers tony
If you would sell the SMR, I definitely buy it off you! Having a 1200GS myself and driving 40.000km a year on average both fun and commute. I would advise to get the GS, it can do and handle anything! Not perfectly in any way like a S1000R but it is my Swiss army knife of choice for every ride I take it on. (even the occasional wheelie :P)
It doesn't look as nimble when filtering. Looks like it does it well enough though. The go anywhere aspect is really appealing and as a long distance tourer, it seems hard to beat. But sell the Duke or SMR? Say it ain't so, RJ! Haha!
great video. I love the way you flick that bike around traffic in London. That must take some skill. It shows that a bike that size can be a commuter as well as everything else. Im seriously considering it
When you said "I got a GS 1200..." I thought for a second that you actually bought it. Couldn't be the case though, because then it would have at least aftermarket mirrors on it :D However, if you plan to get one I think it would substitute the Super Duke more than the SMR. I mean it is the same type of motorcycle and it will do similar things well as the KTM does + the boxer engine won't have that aggressive engine braking habit you dislike. Also I always hope for the SMR to appear in the daily observation videos ;)
@RJ I like GS 12 and I'm thinking to get myself one. Thanks for this video as your thoughts gave some answers to my questions regarding this GS. One last I have: -Would you change exhaust on it or keep the stock one? It sounds really nice on stock so I'm wondering how it would sound on some acrap :)
I had a 800gs, 1200gs and a 1200gsa. All FANTASTIC bikes. 800, most fun off-road. But I do a lot of touring, gsa is my top bike here. Till it got nicked anyways!
Even though I really like your KTM and it'd be a sad sight to see it go, I'd say sell that and buy the GS - it's even better on the long run and as an "overall" (meaning, it's still fast, it's more comfortable, it has more storage, etc,...).
someone once asked MCN what bike they use to carry ask the gear when testing adventure bikes. they said "the KTM 990 adventure of course" . just saying..
Hope I don't sound to crazy, But where I live in the U.S. A lot of people have the same passion as you. So it is not that uncommon for people to ad an extention to there garages to make room for more bikes. Is that an option for you?
Don't let those trolls get to you RJ, I think it kind of comes with the turf, your subscriber base speaks volumes about what people really think......and welcome the wonderful world of the GS, I am forced to agree with you, I too have several bikes of different types, but the GS is the one that can do it all and do it all extremely well - I've yet to find a better all rounder. Lovin' your work as ever RJ, do keep it up....all the best - TMF
There’s something so peaceful and tranquil about a GS. Mostly the sound. So soothing.
that's why i like you RJ, you just give your opinion on things and not sponsored by anyone 500k subscribers and not a single ad on your videos! yo da best
Don't let one internet warrior get to you RJ. We all know your passion for bikes and your opinion isn't for sale. We just watched you ride across Africa on one of those bikes, that alone speaks volumes. I would looooooove to have a GS but it's just not in the budget right now.
People saying you're getting paid to the guy that releases 95% of his videos on different bikes with no actual audio....... Love your videos RJ!
The SMR is extremely rare, you said you looked for ages before finding one. I'd chop the Superduke for the GS personally.
Honestly, I'd keep the KTM. He loves the naked bikes, we barely see the SMR at this point :/
Just cuz we barely see it doesn't mean he doesn't ride it. And fairs fair, he has other nakeds. There's a reason he got the S1000R over the Duke first time round
true bro, but he has the cool nuda 900R which is for me the "better" naked bike than the KTM :p so he should keep the rare smr
He mainly wants a GS because he saw me riding it /s
He mentioned on a early video that he doesn't record much on the SMR because it makes him go full hoonigan when riding it!
I rode a GS for a couple of days whilst my RR was having a service. Did I like it? Yes - but it wasn't perfect. That Bike has a nice sound to it. For me I would love to have that Bike. Thanks for the Video.
One of the few guys who just rides and talks less....and when talks.....you listen. ...brilliant.
Such a beatiful bike, I love the looks of spokes.
RJ always says the truth and how he feels about bikes! been looking at a 650gs lately and saving hard for it!!
I'm a GS owner and I just love it to bits... even her being a bit older (2008) it's just good at everything as you said. it has such a great balance that even being a small guy, I have no problems riding her (1.7m/5'7" and 60kg/130lb).

I have a Triple Black, my second GS, a joy to ride...so well balanced and loads of character...
I like the "if it sounds like an advert, you can bugger off". Good for you man
Great bike, long live the boxer motor! Ya it looks like a big police horse galloping through traffic - vision & precision.
RJ, this was exactly what I needed at the perfect time. I was just making my mind up about a new bike (GS1200 vs. KTM super adventure) and I was concerned about the agile nature of the GS. I have probably commented twice on TH-cam in 6 years. Suffice to say you tell it like it is and don't pander to sponsers + I love your vids. You are not chasing hits - ignore detractors...
i would swap it for the KTM before it breaks down :D
But it's so boring compared to the KTM, plus BMW's aren't as reliable as people seem to think, especially the GS's, lots of issues with the switchgear for example, plus you can remove the clocks without any tools which would be a big deal for London where bike thieves looooove to steal GS's.
Crana those are some good points you made
Yeah, this GS are full of problems but owners won't tell you because they're too proud of they're 18k € bike.
A friend of mine was overtaking a car and the ECU cut off the power (to prevent damages because there was another problem with the engine) and he almost got squashed by the incoming car in the opposite lane.

that joke ahahah I would trade for the S1000R first than for the KTM.
Impressive to see how you handle that big bike in London traffic👍 Hope you decide to get one!
MrBaileys38 I thought it wouldn't be as easy as his nuda ..
Finally you have found the overall kind of bike. These big dual sports adventure bikes...they just do it all ;)
Don't forget the Africa Twin RJ- you loved that!
I know it’s an older posted video but you ride a bike so well 👍🏻
Shift assist pro is addictive specially on the 4-cyl BMW's also the RT works well more comfort.
What's your thoughts on that?would you change anything?
every-time I watch your vids you prov it again, you are one hell of a rider... cheers,.. ;-}
seems Quick and comfortable, and very quick off the line in traffic !
I'm thinking about the G310GS as my first bike but I don't know how realiable a cheap BMW could be
Cheers
RJ, you come across as genuine guy and I enjoy your videos. Keep it up. Ta
RJ, sell the KTM and get the GS ! I had a testride on the weekend with the GS1200 Adventure Black-Edition from a german dealer -
Unfortunately i forgot to try the engine modes, but the bike is great and looks awesome !
Yeah they're effin amazing bikes.
There's a reason Baron used to cream his wet knickers over this bike RJ ;-) . Forget Paris and Milan. Come and do the applecross pass in Scotland
Ironic really, as no British bvlogs and channels come up here, they all travel thousands of miles when its right on their door steps already
The Kruxed Defoe a must rj... I did ac recently
Impressive bike for sure.
Clould u please do a review of the new bmw r9t scrambler?
Before getting my license I thought I would have gotten a sport or naked bike. But, ended up getting a Transalp 600 and love the fact I can go anywhere on it. Took it off road a couple times already with the road tyres and she didn't struggle. Love adventure bikes now. Have you tried to KTM 1290 adventure bike?

Do a tour of all of your bikes RJ
GS is nice, I had one. BUT having a 30" inseam cost a bit of money getting the suspension lowered. It's a great bike
Austin Racing offers an exhaust for the R1200GS but no video. I curious t know how it sounds and performs. Let us know if you get it.
One last little thing, don't use the kill switch, they've had some dumb issue in quality control with the start/kill switch wearing easily. I knew you would come back and jump on one, from the way you were talking about it on your trip. I'm still breaking mine in but it's the best bike I've ever owned, I just love it.
Looks nice. That may be a direction I move in if getting rid of the R nine T.
RJ get the updated 2017 version, they have fixed the cluck of the gearbox
RJ just filtering that GS like a boss!
Yeah well that might not have sounded like an add but you have sold me on one. It even sounds quite good.
I mean all of these bikes cost alot (insurance, gas, service) except the grom :D
Thank you.
Greetings from Germany.
Dies das Ananas
Indeed, it's too private.
Dies das Ananas hey I asked this before, his insurance is multi insurance so it's actually quite cheap compared to what you'd expect but running cost my guess would probably be the most expensive aswell as servicing and mots but you can only really ride one at the time so gas/fuel wouldn't be a problem
He has a gaming channel called "The Gaming Jordanian" with million of susbcribers, that's where he gets his cheese.
he is royalty, he does not work... :)
I can't find his channel
Don't let the trolls get what they want - publicity perhaps. Thanks for a great review and ride!
RJ why you didn't do U-turn and slow your roll challenge?
The car park where I usually do it was full because of an event.
Ok thx for fast replay :-) but is there any chance you will do it in the future?
why?
I am just curious how it would perform against the other bikes that RJ rode and did this test :-)
Have you ever tried the 800GSA? I myself at least prefer that over the 1200 :)
Get a 2017 Triple Black GS, full titanium Akra (with black silencer) and a tinted screen. Very RJ!
Good looking bike for what it is, I really like the looks. And it sounds nice too.
I love your riding RJ you handle that big bike great
Honestly think you should get rid of the SMR and get the GS1200. I'm not sure about your usage, but I rarely see it in videos, and for the most part, it's concrete where you ride. I might be wrong though :)
It might seem resonable to change with one of your vintage bikes, either the DT 400 or DT 360
he doesn't show the smr much because he like to be a hooilgan on it too much and wheelies everywhere so he dosen't want to get in trouble through youtube by posting up that kind of content plus its just a fun little hoon bike for those times you just wanna hoon the big ktm offers a similar experience to the s1000r or the nuda so I'd sell the ktm even though it a beautiful bike with a monster motor it's a bit more serious and demands respect when riding it rather than a playful little 500cc single supermoto which you can just rag the fuck out of everywhere and not have to worry about it biting your head off.
But I'm in love with the KTM's torque
yeah but I bet the nuda could hang with the ktm up to 80mph
plus if he sell the smr he has to front extra money on top where as if he sells the ktm it will more or less pay for the 1200 gs so its the right thing to do in a business sense too.
Hey RJ. Could you please do a test ride on the BMW R Ninet Scrambler, I really loved your test ride with the BMW R Ninet and would love you insight on the Scrambler.
Yours Tim
Kick out the KTM, bring in the GS and Mrs RJ will be very Happy to go on rides in the country on Sunny Sundays = Married Bliss.......
Absolutely love this bike!! Hopefully will be next bike as build quality cant be matched!!
Maybe take a test ride on the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE T for comparison? Same engine as the Super Duke.
RJ, your Nuda 900R is really the good looking and awesome than any other bikes you have & out there in this world ! :) I really like the Nuda.
RJ , there is a simple answer to your bike storage problem. Get an extension to your garage so you can fit even more bikes in it 👍.
The gear shift assist on the GS didn't work too well for me. Among other things I got a false neutral when downshifting while coming in hot into a hairpin on a steep road. Not that brilliant. :)
I know it's not an adventure bike, but whatever happened to your love for the Aprilia Tuono Factory?
Still love it, might revisit it for the revised 2017 model.
+RoyalJordanian will you ever forgive the MV dealership and give the Dragster another go in the dry?
+The Incredible Sulk
Hello The Incredible Sulk,
If I was him, I will never forget MV Agusta.

My girlfriend took a ride on a BMW once, it certainly wasn't a short one though.
In my opinion the gear shifts seem to be rather "clunky" if you will. At least from 1st to 2nd. Kinda a downside but then not a real deal breaker for most.
funneling with a gs. damn, very impressive.
Don't think I'd sell either the Duke or the SMR for a GS, you'd be swapping a very rare bike for a very common one.
lol, "you can bugger off" say what you think mate! unfortunately we now live in a world where your opinion can generate so much hate, I don't even ride or like motorbikes, but you sir, are awesome :) keep making great videos and f**k the haters
it's funny how one week with GS changed your mind :)
RJ why so serious? just ignore the haters, theyre just minority people wanting attention. youre doing fine and we support you all the way
Some comments sometimes require such a reaction, call me an asshole, a knob head etc... and I wouldn't care, but don't call me a liar.
What is it with London and Priuses...
Karyū JDM They're free of congestion tax.
Looking forward to riding this after the KTM 1190R last weekend, good insight
I think your summary explains perfectly why this is such a popular bike, I really like your video too. I especially like that you speak your mind!
You can filter very well too, lol
ride safe
cheers
tony
My opinion would be to swap the bmw for that bmw. But i haven't ridden any of the bikes RJ owns so can't really tell.
Wow even for a stock exhaust this sounds glorious
Do you consider buying the "standard" version?
Maybe you should look at the Adventure model? Also looks nicer than the standard one...
I agree. The adventure looks nicer. But is a bit more top-heavy, because of the fuel tank 30 liters. And a bit more expensive.
Im seriously considering it
Please do an Honda Africa Twin video :) I'd love to hear your opinion.
How does the filtering fair in terms against the nuda for example.. I thought it would have been slightly tougher.... you done well tbh
if possible can you test ride a Ducati MTS1200s. i wonder what you think about Ducati. Greetings from Turkey.
RJ, love the GS. It'll be interesting to get your opinions of the shaft drive since you are used to chain.
SUGS 1
RJ said before he didn't notice the difference.
When you said "I got a GS 1200..." I thought for a second that you actually bought it. Couldn't be the case though, because then it would have at least aftermarket mirrors on it :D
However, if you plan to get one I think it would substitute the Super Duke more than the SMR. I mean it is the same type of motorcycle and it will do similar things well as the KTM does + the boxer engine won't have that aggressive engine braking habit you dislike. Also I always hope for the SMR to appear in the daily observation videos ;)
Nice review. I appreciate your filtering skills. I ride that way here ( USA ) and I am lucky to not be arrested. I've been very lucky!
You should make a video on which bike or type of bike you use when and why. :)
@RJ
I like GS 12 and I'm thinking to get myself one. Thanks for this video as your thoughts gave some answers to my questions regarding this GS.
One last I have:
-Would you change exhaust on it or keep the stock one?
It sounds really nice on stock so I'm wondering how it would sound on some acrap :)
congrats on hitting 500,000!!!
Nice review and thoughts as always thanks RJ
RJ can you do a full tour on all of your 8 bikes?
someone once asked MCN what bike they use to carry ask the gear when testing adventure bikes. they said "the KTM 990 adventure of course" . just saying..
I think it is a good looking bike, but I do see why some don't like it. Does it feel heavy at low speed?
Does the key work with proximity sensors? If so, what would happen if you'd drive away from it. Would the engine cut off?
Hope I don't sound to crazy, But where I live in the U.S. A lot of people have the same passion as you. So it is not that uncommon for people to ad an extention to there garages to make room for more bikes. Is that an option for you?
In London it's impossible, I wish we have the space you guys have in the U.S.
I would like you or someone to compare this with the (New) Multistrada.
