This is how I would mould my beret for air cadets, whether it's your first time or you just feel like re-moulding it I hope you can find some hints in this video
Thank you so so much! I joined the ATC about a month and a half ago and we just got your uniform and I wanted to be sure I got this right. A lot of your videos have helped me as well, thank you so much for making them! :D
Don't do this just before cadets as it takes a few days for your beret to fully dry out. I'd only do this a couple of times when you first get your beret to make sure it's properly moulded but you're going to have to space it out, over the weekends or something so that it's dry for parade nights :)
Just kinda perusing here after watching that excellent bulling video. Guys, really. I'm a Canadian Army regular and although the branches have always been rivals, we're all on the same side. Have respect for your comrades! The Navy ships the Army overseas, the Air Force provides that immediate support for operation ranging from close air support missions to casualty evac, and the Army makes sure both have a port or airfield to use. A team divided is not a team at all.
Someone mentioned about the technique, it's actually the traditional way all of the British Forces are taught to shape a beret 2 tips 1)Get hold of a 'small crown beret' (google it) less material to shape and looks neater. 2)Remove the inner lining, this makes it much easier to shape. Just trim it out, don't unpick the stitching though as the leather band will come off ;)
Thank you so much I ownly just got my greens and had know idea on how to mould my berret. I didnt even know you had to mould it. Thanks to you it looks perfect :)
Apparently, as the inner-linning is a part of the beret and the beret signifies service to the queen you are defacing the queen by removing it, however lots of people do it anyway and it's a kind of infamous practice to get a sleek looking lid :)
@ravcuk Hey thanks for the tips! Unfortunately we can only wear the berets we get issued and there's some debate about whether or not we're allowed to remove the lining. Our WO will rip the lining out of as many berets as he can whereas our CO tells us to leave it in. I definately would have taken mine out if I thought I could get away with it as it is a lot easier to mould without
To make it easier to mold, shave it(you know like you would shave you're face) til it's half the thikness it used to be(remember to soake it first, dry then shave). Don't shave all in one turn shave it multiple times! This is what we do in Norway, makes it easyer to mold:) And I would recomend shrinking it, cause that'll allow you to make it a perfect fit! Hope this was helpfull to someone :)
the doge pupy Really? Because I have a flight scheduled 21st March, and it was still available when I last went. I heard something about the gliders being grounded, but not the planes.
the doge pupy Really? Because I have a flight scheduled 21st March, and it was still available when I last went. I heard something about the gliders being grounded, but not the planes.
Thanks for the tutorial, I just started air cadets 2 weeks ago so im a noob to the moulding, it doesn't look great but what's better a chef hat (what it first looked like out the packet) or moulded quite good and flat??
When moulding the beret, you shouldn't get the leather band wet, but cap badge should come off via a pin inside the beret. But the cap badge is metal, there'd be no problem.
A personal opinion is to totally wet the beret, shape it and keep it on your head until it is dry, keeps the shape more efficiently! Also one criticism don't use clips on your beret, on occasions the teeth will be indented in the beret fabric, not good. Another is really define the badge, your in the ATC be pround and show it off!
Just curious! if you know when did The 593 leave Ravensbourne for swanley? as in the 1980's early 1990's they were stationed in at The Ravernsbourne School.
@wouzerz Thank you. Don't worry, it's just friendly banter between different squadrons and cadets, I have a lot of respect for ANYONE who joins a military organisation :)
WOW thank u very much im actually using this vid and shaping my beret now! Its going good i just got my full uniform today so :) GOOD STEPS AND DETAIL EASY 2 UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!!!
I have a question..I got a new beret (since i've just joined the air cadets)and it has a string in the leather band , what shall i do with it take it out oe leave it in?
I'd say take out the plastic as it makes it SO much easier to mould and more comfortable, cutting out the lining is really controversial, my WO was strictly against it. If that's what's done at your squadron then you should do as you are told but is there any staff you could ask for an opinion first, not just your flight sergeant?
This is the English style .. Our style is to the Left :) Now the best way is actually to wear it under your helmet on the field ;) Good little video :)
I think its very good helpfull video for new cadets i have moulded mine at least 50 times (no joke) im gonna cut my hair so its really short again then remould it to be perfect. word of advice im an NCO i do a lot of inspections to cadet uniforms one thing some cadets say is that they have used an iron on there beret but i would not advise it because it does not help mould the beret, leaves very visable ring marks around the beret and also makes it diss-coloured Cpl Buick 161DF
@miky261 Yea, but at the ATC we do more Shooting then you, More drill, MORE, Field craft, More first aid, and with that MORE fun, oh and to top that off we do more stuff then the Army cadets that the army cadets specialize in, oh and to just add we do Parachuteing, Gliding, and Flying aswell.
@HeatSeekingMissiles I hope it helps, just bear in mind that you may have to mould it a good few times before it actually improves. 367 South Sheffield, what's yours?
@canad1anbadass There's normally one flying slot a month and one gliding slot. to get picked for these it depends on how regularly you turn up and contribute to parade nights and also how many extra activities like fund-raising etc you do. Basically the more you give to cadets, the more you'll get :)
@nihilnoise Thank you, I guess :) I honestly don't know the fundamentals behind alternating between the water, I think it just helps it to soak in faster(??) and the hot water kind of softens it for moulding I think. So i'm not sure how much of a difference it makes, this is just the way I was taught :)
@joshbo6 Yes, that's me :P Do you mean the big piece in the centre of the beret? It depends on preference, my warrant officer ripped mine out because it definately makes moulding and shaping alot harder, however you may want to double check with your staff, some of them can be a bit funny about it.
@DinoTamerMeep You're very welcome, I'm really glad they helped. :) They're mainly aimed at Newbies (sprogs) as I know it can be tricky getting the hang of it when you first get your uniform.
Btw u probably depending on which Sqn you are in might not get beret until 6 months or so as that's when I got mine so don't get your hopes up straight away but good luck hope you enjoy
Cut out the lining and shave it. Soak in hot water then mold on your head. It will keep its shape better and longer. Liberal use of a quality starch while forming will keep it parade ready.
Thanks. Helped my son out with his first CCF beret. Your instructions were much calmer and straight forward than the loud American videos on here!! ☺

Don't use you hairdryer, it can shrink it, and and can also damage the fabric!!!

@ZagrothTreafyr To each their own but you shouldn't get the leather band wet as sometimes it will shrink a little too much
Thanks, you helped me so much! (too shy to ask since I'm a recruit... >_> )

Beret's can be molded any time so long as their wet with hot water, remember to tear out the plastic square on the inside (if it's new).

I suggest putting the beret under the tv/bed for two weeks and after that take a towel and iron the beret Note-beret must be below towel when ironing
