They've done it for about 10 years now. First Titan card was in 2013. Just a slightly better binned 780 Ti with double precision processing enabled and 3 more GB of RAM for the low low price of $999. Only 300 dollars more for what is the same part.
And right now a 780 TI will get 31.19fps in Borderlands 3 high settings, a GTX Titan will get 31.88fps. Even back in the day the difference was never more than a couple fps and that huge mark up.

The Nvidia PCB was actually even missing some components found in the Inno3D one, for example. So, yeah, it's cheaply made, typical of a 60-class or 50-class. This 4070 should have been named 4060 Ti or even 4060. But if they named it that, they might have not been able to priced it at $599.
They tried to launch a 4080 12GB because if it was named what it probably was (4070 class card), people would be upset with the high price that Nvidia was charging. They kind of screwed over their card naming in an attempt to reset price expectations higher and charge more. It's probably why their line up so screwed up.

The pricing is almost certainly because publicly traded companies aren't supposed to just accept when periods of great success come to an end, so they need extreme margins to attempt to keep the profits from the mining craze and that's also combined with raising prices for rampant inflation. At the very least I can't accept that the (MSRP) price increases we've seen compared to the 30 series are purely from inflation and increasing costs of silicon like Nvidia claims. The PS5 and Series X would be hemorrhaging money for Sony/Microsoft if that were the case.
I just want a reasonable card to recommend to my friends still on Pascal cards man, but the under $500 market sucks unless you want a 6700/6800 XT.

    • @MacTX

@@haukionkannel The released 4070 should have handedly beaten the 3080, it doesn't. This level of performance should have been a 4060 or 4060 Ti class card. The reason it wasn't named as such is they wouldn't be able to charge $599 for it.
What this means is that when they eventually release the 4060 Ti, 4060, 4050, and lower class cards, those cards will be overpriced and not give the type of upgrade over the previous generation that people expect.
Nvidia screwed up their naming convention with the 4000 series. Some would argue they did that with the 3000 series too.
People have price/performance expectations and Nvidia is messing with it in order to push prices higher.
Basically, they're giving us less of an upgrade and charging more for it and are hoping people don't notice.

They gimped it too much.

Hello, I'm new to your channel.
My takeaway from the 4070 is that the name is wrong and misleading, and it's priced too high. The 4070 is almost certainly an upscaled 4060ti. If we were making a comparison of the 4060ti to the 3080, it'd be a much more different tone discussion I think.
Also, it's priced a bit too high, in context, I think. Getting '3080 performance' for $100 less sounds like a good deal, until you realize that the 4070 should by rights be getting above 3080 performance. If the 4070 was comfortably b eating the 3080 by 10-15% at $600, I think a lot more people would be interested. But getting only 90% of the 3080's performance for that price doesn't feel as great. If this card was priced at $550 or $500 though, it'd also be a very different story.
If this card was priced at $500, and you could directly compare it to the 3070, I think a lot of folks would be singing its praises.

actually not surprising at all that the 4070 stacks up bad against the 3080: the good showing of the 3070 against the 2080 comes from the fact that they were based on the same class of chip TU104 vs GA104, both with a 256bit memory-bus. the 4070 vs the 3080 is comparing a 320bit GA102 vs a 192bit AD104. A fair comparison would be a 3080 vs a maybe cut down version of the AD103. But of course NV pricing makes that moot.

I think you've nailed Nvidia's strategy. They are going to look at the GPU as a 'good enough' platform to run 'crutch' (sorry, 'value added') software. Frame generation and supposed AI derived image map compression are just the start. AMD are going to be forced to either spend a lot more on software development or they are going to have to deliver significantly higher value in silicon. As a side suggestion take a look at the RX6800XTwith it's 16GB of VRAM . I think it's between the same performance of a 3080TI and the 3080 and currently they are going for fire sale prices starting at $510.

The 6950XT can also be regularly found for $599 with a free game up to around $640 for fancier models. This net you noticably greater raster performance, competitive enough RT performance, but consumes way power power.

I am building a new pc for the first time in a while. I already have a geforce 750ti, but I can get current for $600. The geforce 4k offers many benefits beyond gaming performance that is difficult or impossible to achieve via other methods. The 750ti really does perform well enough for my gaming needs, though I am sure that the 4070 will perform better. The other large advantage is that the 4070 has 1/2 to 1/3 the idle power draw of the 750ti.
I have also been playing with stable diffusion, and some of the interesting things in that game require 11.3GB of ram minimum. So the 12GB of ram on the 4070 qualifies to let me experiment with those systems. Also at the top end, the 4090 is twice as fast as the 3090 for stable diffusion, hopefully that speed rolls over to the 4070.
In reality, most of the time I am concerned about the power draw at idle, and periodically if it meets the minimum requirements for stable diffusion. If it were twice as fast or not is not a significant concern.

For me checking total memory bandwidth was a nice way to tell if a GPU was fast, people always have ignore this and companies always took the advantage and hide it on their bus/clock speeds as most wouldn't even understand how to translate to memory performance...Now finally people ask themselves why only has 512GB/s been a 70-Class GPU and the cache dies explain the cut in performance but at the end of all things they aren't even cutting prices with the money they save using lower speed memory. Worst is they call it theatrical speed now so we went from hiding the information to giving misleading numbers of current VRAM performance.

It seems that all of NVidia's engineering effort has gone into product segmentation rather than product features. My guess is that the extra cache allows the card to compensate for the reduced memory bandwidth. That would make this an amazing 60-class card. This is because people doing professional work on these cards likely have a different pattern of memory access and thus would be hobbled by the performance. Which is what NVidia wants so as to push people into a professional (read: higher-cost) card.

I got a 4070FE (upgrading from a 970) on launch day in the UK, and don't regret it. It has a warranty, unlike used cards. The price is on line with its performance, compared with other cards available new with warranties, both with Nvidia GPUs *and* AMD GPUs above and below it. Yes, faster cards are available, but there's always something better if you're prepared to open your wallet wider: I wasn't. I also like the sub-200W power consumption which has real economic benefits in terms of running costs, compared with 330W monsters.
I've even been pleasantly surprised by its performance at 4K: even paired with my 8 year old 5820K at stock speeds, it's able to run everything I've thrown at it with high/ultra settings and 50-70+ FPS. I think Control is the only game that needed DLSS to hit that frame rate.
If I was a competitive multiplayer gamer, sure, this card would be inadequate at 4K. But for those of us single players - especially playing older titles - it's *fine*. Whilst some focus on AAA titles ported from consoles assuming 12-16GB of VRAM, I think the Steam Deck has a real chance of becoming another target platform. Doom Eternal shows how well good-looking games can run, with a bit of care from their developers. Boycott sloppy ports, at least until they're fixed to run reasonably well on hardware people actually own!
