New Chrome OS Start Menu for the Chromebook

- Find out how to enable the new Chrome OS app launcher menu on your Chromebook. Until recently you would need to be in the developer channel. The good news is you can now start using this in the stable channel.
You need to enable a flag to use the new start menu on your Chromebook. Chrome OS flags are easy to enable and there isn't anything you need to be too concerned about when using these.
This flag is pretty well developed, so you should not experience any issues. You can easily disable the flag if you wish if any problems occur.
I much prefer the new Chrome OS app launcher menu. Unlike the current menu, which takes up the whole display. The new menu is similar to what the Chromebook offered many years ago. It's also similar to the Microsoft Windows start menu.
Another good thing about the new menu is not having to reorganise your apps. At the moment apps can be located all over the menu, and it can be a pain putting these in order. The new menu ensures no gaps between apps, and it gives you a much cleaner easier to use layout.

Thanks, I can't really say how safe it is. All flags can cause issues. However, I doubt a flag to add a calendar is going to cause too many issues.

The old start menu always felt too plain or in a constant state of beta (coughs windows 10). I love the new one! Is there any way to order the applications in alphabetical order in the new menu? I’m kinda OCD about that kinda stuff.
Just right click on the menu and it will give you the option to sort by name.

Right click on the menu and choose sort by name.

Try using the same flag mentioned in the video to disable rather than enable.

P L E A S E H E L P ! ! ! I know how to change the Wallpaper, move the Shelf, etc. However, HOW DO I CHANGE THE COLOR of my Chromebook's Shelf itself (no problem with pinning and unpinning, etc.)? Again, my problem is changing the Shelf color/background itself - how do I change it, please? Thanks in advance.
Dark or light theme changes the colour of the shelf.
@@ChromeComputingTV If you're using a Chromebook now, sir, please see if you can in fact change your Shelf. My "complaint" is in reference to a recent phenomenon, whereby in the past the Shelf was customizable...then suddenly it changed spontaneously! Thanks for your kind response; however, Dark Theme is NOT my choice at all AND it only turns the Shelf into a pure MOST UNDESIRABLE BLACK. The other two options - Light Theme and Auto - NEVER resolve the issue at all and the Shelf remains a nasty-looking gray, or grey!!! Perhaps Google (for tech reasons?) does NOT want the Shelf changed except by individual users while the Wallpaper, etc., may be customized.... Your response will be greatly appreciated, and thanks for the initial reply.

Thanks. Yes I mentioned in the video it appears some work needs to be done because you can't see the notifications too well. I prefer the lighter menu, but because of the issue of not being able to see the notifications I user the darker menu at the moment. Hopefully this will be fixed in the future. All flags are experimental, so they should hopefully change for the better going forward.

Great video thanks for showing this. Is there anything for the file menu as I find it so dulll in it's present form, maybe a windows look with various folder icons for docs. Video etc.
Thanks, you could have a look at installing a Linux file menu. There are plenty to choose from. I've got videos showing you how you can do this.

I think it has gone now. It was available with a flag but no longer.
New chrome 98 search has a drop down menu when selecting images, shopping, videos, etc. Is there a way to get the old banner layout where all those search choices are spread out horizontally across the search banner? Thanks for your help.

It sounds like your Chromebook AUE possibly expired before the flags became available.

Sorry ignore me. I thought it was a different video. Forget AUE has nothing to do with that. However, the reason you can't see the flag is because all Chromebooks now use this menu talked about in the video.

I'm the complete opposite. I'm trying to get my old layout back. I hate the new menu screen which is stuck to the left hand side. How do I change this? I'm currently pulling my hair out with frustration. I'm terrible at working technology 🤬😂 I tried following instructions (chrome://flags), i dont have productivity available. Not sure where to go next?
You can't change it anymore. The new menu is the only option. I'm sure you'll get used to it.
