  • Welcome back to the “Forester Freshen Up”, where i detail the steps i take to freshen up and breathe new life back into this 2001 Subaru Forester STI (SF5).
    This Japanese legend is absolutely filthy and needs a few small jobs doing, but overall is as straight as a die and almost completely factory original.
    In this second part, i tackle the dirty, dusty & slightly stinky interior as well as doing a small modification to the outside of the car that will improve it's stance greatly!

    Won't the wheel spacers knacker the bearings? I thought you had to fit a wider wheel with an offset calculated to keep a centred load on each hub if you're going to space them.

    • @JohnnyGetsCash
      @JohnnyGetsCash  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose that any addition outside of manufacturers spec has the potential to cause headaches, however small spacers like these certainly don't worry me enough to avoid using them. Those BBS wheels are beautiful but they simply don't fill the arches enough for my taste!

    I think you are doing a great job, keep the video's as they are. Did you clean the plastics in the rear and roof liner? Another excellent piece of kit is a steam cleaner for nooks and crannies, especially round the front center console, air vents, ashtrays etc especially if grimey

    • @JohnnyGetsCash
      @JohnnyGetsCash  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Adrian, thanks for your comment and for the recommendation of a steamer - thats something i don't currently use but would love to add to my kit soon! Re plastics & liner - good spot! The plastics did all get a quick APC wipe down and the headliner had a quick going over too, but neither made the cut into the video (i always feel that i run the risk of overloading the video when i try to include the small details too!)

    • @JohnnyGetsCash

      Hi Robert, I’m afraid I don’t know for sure but it’s worth asking the question on the Forester owners club as I’m sure someone there will know 👍

  • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
    @ProfessionalPainterDecorator 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    does the drill brush damage the napp of the fabric on the seats?

    • @JohnnyGetsCash
      @JohnnyGetsCash  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Phil, Thanks for your comment. Good question... The would be yes - if you weren't sympathetic with it (i.e if you applied undue pressure or held the brush in one spot for a prolonged period). If you're sensible (and assuming the drill brush you're using isn't extremely firm) then its perfectly safe to do this and the results are great! In fact, as was the case here with the alcantara which had become flattened and shiny over the years, the motion of the drill brush actually helps to revive the fabric as well as thoroughly clean it.
      In my experience the fabric you need to be super careful with when using the drill brush is velour (80's/90's cars mainly)...That can be tricky!

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnnyGetsCash I've some JDM cross sports seats to do this week, that have bad stains on them. Thought about a hand brush with 1001 solution, then use a VAX carpet cleaner hand tool on it that will wet and vac it up. Sound ok with you?

    • @JohnnyGetsCash
      @JohnnyGetsCash  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeh that does sound like a fairly gentle approach. Do you have access to a compressor / air line?

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnnyGetsCash no, only a stage 5 HVLP spray gun set up that could be used to blow air.. its warm air too

    • @JohnnyGetsCash
      @JohnnyGetsCash  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator was just going to suggest that you could try the air extraction technique if all else fails. Check out episode 4 of my Chop To the top series and you'll see how I use the technique to remove deeply engrained oil from floor mats. In fact I ought to do a standalone video on the technique. I'll get that sorted soon!

    Yo dude .. be honest does the ‘Brooo’ handle ok now you’ve widened the track ?? I’m asking because I’ve just bought a 89 Subaru Legacy RS and purchased some Speedlines as per the Prodrive rally cars used , mine are the correct 17” et48 that Prodrive used on conversions but I’d like it to sit right but handle ok too , keep up,the good work CheeRS

    • @JohnnyGetsCash
      @JohnnyGetsCash  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks for getting in touch! The Foz handles brilliantly to be honest (both before and after fitting spacers)! The only slight downside that i can mention so far is that there is a slight speed wobble after about 90mph, which is a little disconcerting, but in reality...how often do most of us bomb around at that speed?! For me personally, it's a price i'm willing to pay for the improved overall look. If you're thinking of doing the same, these Direnza spacers seem to be legit - Great quality, well made units by the look / feel of them. I hope that helps, and best of luck with your Legacy (what a car!), Cheers!

    I noticed you use two spray bottles on the carpet and interior. I assume one is G101, is the other AS Brisk?

    • @JohnnyGetsCash
      @JohnnyGetsCash  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well spotted! Generally I use two bottles. The first is simply a soap & water mix to help loosen and lift dirt, the second is G101 (in varying dilutions depending on the job). Sometimes you will see a third bottle as well. This is a basic diluatable carpet cleaner just to help with the freshness / fragrance. Hope that helps!

    you need a real extractor that rinses the soap out

    • @JohnnyGetsCash
      @JohnnyGetsCash  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks for your comment! True, an injection extractor would potentially speed up the process, but the extractor i use is certainly powerful enough to clear all detergent / dirt etc from the pile. If there is ever a really stubborn area to deal with, i use an air blown / vacuum extraction technique which is by far more effective than liquid injection / extraction (see Chop To The Top episode 4). Cheers!
