The early races were held at Sky Ranch then moved to Stead later. I have 110 acres on top of the highest mountain seen in the video and can still see were the runway and taxiways are. It was a great place to grow up. Every September I would be overcome with some 'illness' and spend all day watching the airplanes. :)
Must be 1965 as september 12th was a Sunday that year. 65 was my first trip to the Air Races. I've only missed twice since then. Thanks for sharing some great coverage. Now that's racing.
I had just went into the USAF in 1964 at the age of 19 and went to Edwards AFB in California and was a mechanic 43151E jet engine 4 and over on the TB58 Hustler, those where the days when being in the Air Force where the height of my career. The real Air Force.
This is epic!! Great job. My Grandfather was Tom Cassutt, he designed a lot of the Formula 1 pylon racers. Do you by chance have any more footage or pictures of those?
I remember them a decade later in Trade-a-plane (lots of them & parts!) averaging 100k... I said let's get one- but Dad said ya gotta be a Millionaire to keep 'em flying (he stuck with the self-supporting workhorses)!
Hey Isamu, we're doing a show for the Reno Air Races and would like to use your old footage for a historical feature in the show. Can we have permission to use it? Thanks; cool stuff.

Where was the Sky Ranch?

Great Bob Hoover footage. Love the Walt Ohlrich and John Church Bearcats too.

Gotta love the start of the Unlimiteds at 18:45mins! Excellent filming of the individual planes during the race. #8 is my Dad. Thank you for sharing!
That is some classic Bob Hoover footage!

I owned a home right there in Spanish Springs from 2002 - 2015. The scenery is so familiar, even with all of the neighborhoods missing.
Still have my race program from 1966, my first air race....only missed 3 since
Some crazy stripper & black tie party music to air races. But thanks for posting.
Well since Miss Smirnoff's cowling reads champion '64 I would guess this is from '65.
Today's air race not even a shadow of what it used to be...Very sad.
great races!
The good old days, the were so close to the stands. RA Hoover was amazing.
I saw Mr. Hoover perform in his yellow Mustang at Oshkosh in 1983...I agree, he's amazing.
This was during a time when the Reno Air Races were more interesting.
I didn't see any WWII paint jobs. When did the efforts to restore warbirds back to the original configuration become popular? Thanks for posting.
Serious restorations started in the '80's. Now only the Reno racers get the gaudy paint schemes.
I wonder what you could buy a P-51 for back in 65?

Sure, no problem.
The red and white P-51 belong to Dr Sherman Cooper
