    The yacht redesign and build is amazing, but the best part of these videos is the BBC nature series on Mole Rats and Leafcutter Ants. Such a well rounded TH-cam channel!

    I am old enough to remember the Mike Plant tragedy. He was a real contender. I presently own a Bruce Farr designed Beneteau First 47.7. We made numerous upgrades from new such as washer dryer, air-conditioning, generator, removable solid dodger and bimini etc etc. Last weekend I sailed from Nassau Harbour to Green Cay off Rose Island. The wind was out of the east south east at 20 kts. Our course was more or less East. We had a double reefed main and roller furling blade. We saw 8.5kts and averaged well over 7.5 kts upwind. If a tactician had been aboard we may have gone slower to point higher. My point is that it is a joy to sail a boat that sails well. I like the plan for the stern! A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

    Hi Matt
    My infusion experience was primarily when I was a PM up at Platinum Marine in Vancouver. We did a pilot run of five inboard megayacht tenders for Zodiac/Hurricane. The deck had a high bathtub style coaming around the entire seating area, and the hull had multiple strakes. When I first saw the design my first thought was "you want me to infuse THAT?", but everything went smoothly from the get go. We did have the BC rep from the resin manufacturer alongside for the first hull and deck. He showed us some great techniques like a method for filling in a dry spot on the fly.
    My take away was that the cost (apart from the actual vacuum pump itself) was less than vacuum bagging a wet layup. There is virtually no resin waste, and the layup is perhaps 20% denser than a well squeegeed hand layup. No odor or potential resin sensitivity build up. No need for fancy bagging film and the bag sealing can be fully tested before introducing the resin. If balsa is the core every block is fully encased in resin, resulting in a waterproof core that is stronger and stiffer than foam. (but heavier) We also did foam core panels on a flat table. Total failure on the first tests until we started hand drilling the foam on 1" centers instead of relying on the factory perforations.
    Definitely a process where you do your learning curve before diving in!
    Later on I did the engine beds for a 144' motor yacht-- 2 inches thick in one shot. Saved tons of time .
    I'm not convinced of the benefits of epoxy for a part that is above the water like the cabin or stern deck. In order to have better mechanicals than vinlyester the low temp epoxy should be post cured--another level of complication.

    I have sailed off shore with Crazy Horse. The crew said it was very uncomfortable and minimalistic below deck. It was fast but had a minimal beam.

    Transom redos offer such a wide range of possibilities and potential for upgrades. Watching you use battens to explore new transom shapes sure brings back memories. One of the common problems with cruising former race boats is that the flat, relatively wide stern underbodies can be VERY NOISY when anchored due to wave slapping. When big wakes from pongas, powerboats and large dinghies pass from astern, the pounding can cause the whole boat to shudder. For an ex race boat I had previously extensively cruised, then subsequently extensively rebuilt a number of years ago, I considered this to be one of the biggest problems with the boat. Unlike Duracell, the boat also had an IOR influenced hollow and bustle under the stern, which probably made the gurgling, slapping, and sometimes wake slamming even worse. But even without that, flat stern underbodies tend to be annoyingly noisy when anchored. During my rebuild I filled in the original IOR measurement point hollow and gave the stern underbody a modest V shape very similar to the V shapped stern underbody on Bill Lee's MERLIN. I'm happy to report that it was successful beyond my most optimistic hope in completely quieting down the gurgling, slapping, slamming problem. It also provided a little more hull floatation aft to help with offsetting the additional weight than tends to accumulate aft since there is just more room aft for cruising gear and amenities. So that's something to consider for your project that can potentially make the boat much more liveaboard cruising friendly. As you modify and refair the stern, this would be the time to consider it.       I have experienced this on other boats, and it is extremely annoying. I would say that Duracell is not the wide and flat underbody at the stern that the more modern yachts have, it's a little more round. This may be something that we'll have to live with if it is an issue, I don't see a way around fairing that away without it becoming an even more massive project than it already is.     I don't think I would want to be in a cockpit so far aft offshore. There would be a lot of movement back there. Those boats you were comparing were designed to have much wider sterns, essentially the design of Duracell but with over 2 m of the stern cut-off.

    As a cruiser to be able to load from the step to the cockpit heavy gear its good to have a opening from the step to the cockpit as well as easy to manhandle a Life raft from cockpit to water ( Just incase?) & think about fish filleting (Messy & easy to wash down ) But the most important thing is self steering gear , Maintenance , Connections to tiller or wheel , This goes for the wind vane type or under cockpit model = Very important as both will be WELL USED . Fair winds & following seas . Bigger IS better .

    My first introduction to infusion was while building a transom extension on a 60' "expedition" motor yacht. The crew became quite adept at it over the course of several projects. They taught me that you can pull resin over amazingly complex shapes including overhead laminations. Just a thought.

      I would love to do some infusions. I'm starting to work with some guys locally who may help me do a couple infusion projects but it is an added expense because I would need to use a more expensive epoxy, plus the tools and materials. You are right that the transom extension would be a good candidate for it. My guess is that I'll probably do more vac bagging on it instead of infusion, but who knows?

    How on earth this boat was not picked up by a museum to restore and put out on show.
    Given the F1 of sailing today is called the America s Cup. Larry Ellison may have found a mill for the job, and do less upkeeping on his fighterjet.
    Quite a shame, and total disgraceful to what Mike has done achieved and risked to be a pioneer to solo round the world racing in the US
    Very well done your project embarquing to save this legendary boat, and nurture Mike's legacy

    The new stern with a more vertical transom should give you an opportunity to add a wind vane steering system with less difficulty.

    Hi guys, came across your channel via another channel called sailing magic carpet. Have liked and subscribed and looking forward to seeing the project develope. I also follow another channel which you may or may not know about. It is called Sailing NV. It is about a Open 60 that was stretched to 66 feet and they are converting it from a race boat to a cruising boat like you guys are. Well worth checking out.     I am loving your videos and spent the last three days watching all of your videos from the first to to this one. I am totally enjoying your videos and the way your wife helps and is supportive of the project and remodeling of Duracell and think that you are doing a fantastic job. I look forward to the end product after you finish and start cruising again. I found your website through Sailing Magic Carpet’s Alladino and Maya. Personally, I think the two of you have one of the best Vlogs on TH-cam dealing with sailboat rebuilds and DIY along with Sail Life.
    As to the retrofit of the stern, I personally think if you give the stern a slightly negative slant it will provide more room for lazerets (Sp?) for storage and guest. I know this adds a little bit of length, but that only is a problem when mooring in a marina and I don’t see the two of you spending a lot of time in marinas.
    I am an 81 year old retiree who dreamed of building a boat and sailing the world when I was a young junior high school student. I was also a member of a Sea Explorer Scout Troop in New Jersey. We went on a Navy cruise on a destroyer out of the Philadelphia Navy Base and I was greener than my uniform by the time we got back to Philadelphia that evening. I found out that because I had had both eardrums ruptured that it threw my equilibrium off and that is why I got seasickness. Later in life, I found out that there were medications I could take to prevent the seasickness issue and took several cruises with my wife and a number of fishing and cruising trips on my brother’s 32 foot Boston Whaler. I tried to talk my wife into buying a sailboat and cruising the world like the two of you, but she was not having any of that. She thought of boats as the bottomless money pit. I look forward to your next video and am living vicariously through the two of you and how you are living your dream.

I actually like the vibe of your boat a bit more than MC but don't tell them.:) The potential speed of your boat and the revisions you are doing to make it your own are much more my style. Keep the faith.
    I will ask you if you have ever used flap discs on a angle grinder for gelcoat removal and fiberglass prep? Once you go there you will never use an orbital again. Much faster and if you are careful just as nice a result.

      Hey thank you! You are right that a flap disk on a grinder would be faster. My orbital is connected to the vacuum and that's why I use it. If I build a tent or something around the area that I'm stripping then I'll use the grinder.

      @@TheDuracellProject Totally understand. I use the Festool with the vac for everything else but when in demo mode my preference is the grinder gets it over with ASAP. Cleanup and move on. Good luck moving forward and have a great weekend.

    For what it's worth, I think a vertical or perhaps slightly beyond vertical stern would look great and provide a lot of room for lazerette storage.

    Matt check out the best cruising sailboat ever Fetching Light. The guy is a civil engineer everything he did is excellent. Many great tips. The boat was for sale that is why they made the video, he did everything professionally.

    Watching you sand the transom I was wondering why you would not use a planner. I remember that when Sail Life did its bottom and removed the Gelcoat they used a specialized planner that work very well, removed consistent thickness, and reduce dust dramatically (it may be a good idea to contact Mads...). Just a thought! BTW your knowledge as a ship right is another level.

      If I had one I'd use it, they're not cheap. When it comes time to do the bottom, I may try to find one to rent or something. For now my festool big guns sander can blast through paint and fairing pretty quick and it's connected to the vacuum to keep the dust down. Thanks for the kind words!

      Hi Brian, I got started at a boatyard in Seattle back in 2010 and worked there for a few years. Then I started my own independent ship write business (just me). I still work as an independent shipwrite on client's boats. I get all sorts of projects and learn a lot through this. Also, just owning and living aboard a boat for 7 years, I learned a lot about maintenance and fixing things.

    I guess you are going to try to avoid adding to much excess weight as you do this. Your modification will certainly look better and be more functional than the extreme reverse transom that is there now.

    Thanks to Magic Carpet for the referral and to you for rescuing and recycling a classic. Boats like a Santa Cruz 50 or Adams 13 seem interesting cruisers. Have to love a long waterline and plenty of sail, is there anywhere to find the boat specifications?

      SC50s are awesome, Hull #1 was recently for sale here on the Puget Sound, I think that would be a really fun cruiser conversion. I'd never heard of an Adams 13, just looked it up. It's right up my alley being long and narrow, small volume and lightweight.

    Hey guys! What’s the centreboard case looking thing in the centre of the cockpit - was it for a stabilising centre board of some sort? I presume the twin rudders were further aft?

      emergency/tracking rudder. Yes twin rudders are aft.

    New subscriber here. Am wondering how you are going to steer her? Will you have a Monitor on the stern, like she had originally, or go with autopilots? Or will you perhaps go with a full NKE system?

      I'm a big fan of electronic wind vanes, we had a raymarine system on our last boat and used it endlessly. I'm sure that's what will go in Duracell.

      Half the rig is on the bottom of the Pacific. Duracell was dismasted in a collision in the mid 90's. No one was hurt. We're looking for a mast. Know of one? ;)

    i was wondering why not do a reverse slope to whats already there ? this giving more room and makes more slender.just a thought.but love the mole rat hahahahahaha and love your work .

      It actually has to do with the backstay chainplate placement, and ease of build. I'll be getting into this in later vids, stay tuned.
