When we first started riding the Shed and Gambrill, the land managers didn’t know what to think (late 80s). Then they wanted to ban MTBs. We started MORE and started to do trail maintenance and going to endless meetings with the managers. Gambrill park was closed to all users during a state park under funding because there weren’t many users. The managers realized mountainbikers were users, and their numbers (and funding) increased. With lots of effort by MORE it went from almost being banned to “here’s the key to the maintenance shed, if you need saws go ahead and use what we have”. Advocacy is so important. I saw my first Rock Shox on that very trail in I think 1990.
@@bkxc thanks, Brian! I’ve lived in Moab since 99. Glad you got to experience the east coast gnar, the shed, reddish knob, GW national forest etc. You should do a video about how important advocacy and clubs are. Most of the trails in the DC area are open due to the efforts of MORE, and I’m proud to be one of the founders back in 92. It’s an extremely active group. Go to more-mtb and check them out. They had eleven rides last week.
Thankfully we didn't break 3 saws. We just got 3 stuck in one particular tree. 4th saw got them out. Boundary Line, the next one over from Three Saws, has the berms you mention, and more. It'll blow your mind, as will the new Cotavid.
HUGE props to the team of MORE volunteers who designed, got those trails built and work tirelessly to maintain them. Hopefully you get to sample some of their other work, including the MoCo trails, and the Patapsco's Army work. Head a little further south to Northern Virginia so you can get a taste of what the group has done in this region. Glad you found them phenomenal :-)
Machine built trails don't all have to be bermed out jump lines! Deep Creek Lake State Park in MD and Jakes Rocks in PA both have incredible machine built trails with a lot of rocks and big features built into them.
You work with what you have and this particular hillside was unique in that there were hardly any rocks. We fully expected to uncover more when the machine work started, but they just weren't there. Sure, we got some rocks on the flow trail, but nothing like the rest of our trail systems. We've got miles and miles of rocks, come on down and you won't be disappointed. Jakes is amazing, but really not that many rocks over all - and that's not a criticism, I love the mix of flow and rock they have.
Frederick Trails I think you misunderstood my comment. Brian was complementary of the trail in the video and wondered why people are so quick to dismiss machine built trails. I was simply adding to that.
Now I'm definitely curious to see where he rides in PA. After watching this video, I hope he went to Rattling Creek. Although after seeing the map and since it looks like he rode Brandywine in DE, part of me thinks he might have done the Wissahickon in Philly. Which in some ways would be a good taste. It's a rather iconic trail system, although many (including myself) would say it's not as good as it was in the early 90's.
Yea I can’t wait to see what he rides in PA. I haven’t ridden the Wiss in a really really long time. I would love to see him ride out here in Rothrock and see what real central PA chunk looks like.
In the early days, the Wissahickon was nationally known as one of the best places in the country to ride. Technical single track within city limits. It'd be worth including in this trip if only to provide variety. But yeah, Rothrock or Rattling Creek are more in line with technical PA riding.
@@jacobzimmerman3492 Glen Park would be fun. Especially since he's mentioned how he likes "enduro" type trail systems and it doesn't get much more "enduro" than Glen Park.
I’m from Florida and have happily lost a lost of blood and ski.n at the water shed and gambrale state park. Amazing riding ! Shout out to Brian at the Frederick bike doctor for all his work keeping me on the trails!
I did the 2019 BCBR and met you there. I’m actually from the DC area and thought your comments on the BCBR similarities were spot on. I told people during the race that same thing....they looked at me like I was crazy!
Hey Brian, so glad you made it to the Frederick watershed! Or as we call it: "the Shed" which just happened to be the name of our BC bike race dual team in 2012. It's been my go to place for 35yrs and served as the perfect training ground for that epic BC ride in 2012.
You would LOVE Southside Park, in Atlanta. Yes, Atlanta. It's 15min from the Airport. It's a quick ride too so it'll be perfect if you want to fit it in while in town.
Put Allegrippis trails on your list if PA will be next. You will love that trail system and tons of camping and parking spots. Thanks for the at nice video.
When you get to Connecticut you have several good options Norbrook Farms and Brewery, Cowles, Mooween, Rockland, Case Mountain...Plenty of chunk and jank to choose from!
Try the Inclined Plane Trails in Johnstown, Pa for a one of a kind experience. Essentially lift access trails by public transportation, the inclined plane. The only unfortunate things are the hours during the pandemic, not sure if the inclined plane is open during the week.

I was in the area two years ago visiting a friend in Westminster, now I know this is close by I’m definitely bringing my bike from the UK next time I visit!
As I was watching this video, it occurred to me that I hadn't been catching your Patreon posts. So I checked it out, and low and behold, my payment information on my Patreon account was outdated! That might be a problem. updated it, and now the world is good again. I really like the time-lapse you do at the end of your videos to show your travels. That's a nice touch.
Nice video Brian! After watching this, I definitely need to visit the 'Shed! That looks like a lot of stuff that we have in Pennsylvania, but great to see new places.
I second the “if you can ride here statement “!! Ive ridden all over the country and there’s not much harder than the Shed that I’ve tried. PS people who hate flow trails hate fun and I dont have room for that kind of negativity in my life.
So happy you picked the watershed for Maryland!! My local trail system, so I may be biased but it is the best hands down! Also I thought the 50 state shred was an awesome idea when you started, and now seeing the trails I ride every time on your channel, it makes it so much more awesome!!! 🤘 Hope you make it back again soon! Safe travels!
Trail looks like something here in Scotland where i live, and also the thick humid air is the same. Nice footage, you inspired me to get a go pro and start making videos, FrogWaterMTB ;)
Welcome to the Shed! 3 saws is def a very fun flow trail but most people use it to pedal up. There are a couple other trails that run parallel to that which have some massive berms, tables and gaps. But 3 saws as you said is pretty bermless!
So many great classic janky east coast trails in PA, can’t wait to see where you end up there, kinda hope you make it to Rothrock, but Allegrippis is awesome too.
Woah man, I’m a Maryland native but currently mountain bike the poconos region. The dog days of summer are hard, but the rocks are harder in Maryland. The mid Atlantic region is very cruel in how night time gives little relief. 10 miles in Appalachia feels like 30 miles in the Rockies. At least that’s how my hands feel after every ride.
When you hit Jersey, here are some places to check out. Ramapo Mountain State Forest, Ringwood State Park (the white trail is sweet), and Allaire State Park. Ramapo and Ringwood are some of the jankiest places I’ve ever ridden, the whole place is rock. Allaire is further south but it has some sweet jump lines, flowy trails, and awesome gullies with jumps, roll ins, and rollers.
There's a jump trail (Boundary Line) that runs next to Three Saws and has huge berms. Nice to have some flat turns in the mix too, imho. We typically use Three Saws as the climb trail but it's fun the other direction too. Come back some time, there's a LOT more to ride at the Shed.
We are from Colorado and visiting family in Gettysburg and I just to the Shed based on a recommendation from a friend that grew up near these trails. Pretty rad stuff.

These types of trails are all over Maryland. Northwest Branch Trail has a dope chute system called Copperhead, shit is super fast with berms and creek crossings. Shits dope.
Can't wait to get there this Spring. The leaves are just too bad in Maryland now. Ive almost broken myself twice in two weeks from not seeing to roots and rocks under leaves.
