    Interesting archaeology...
Incidentally I heard you use the phrase 'bog standard' - it has a fascinating origin myth that many might not be aware of. Apparently in 1920s Britain introductory Meccano kits (Erector brand equivalent in US) came in two forms - 'Box Standard' and 'Box Deluxe'. In the playground school boys transmogrified these to 'Bog Standard' and 'Dogs Bollocks' - meaning supremely desirable. It's a good story anyway.

"BIOS for the Buchla 700 and NASA 3D Helmet Display"
Hold on, what? What is this helmet display and how can these devices possibly share a BIOS? This is utterly fascinating.

bad magic is going to be a reference to the "magic" string identifying the type of file. This is long time Unix usage, for the "file" command (e.g. file /bin/ls which will return that it's a binary of whatever architecture). Basically I'd say this looks like the code is trying to verify that at least at the start this is a valid image.

The 700 is a remarkable instrument in its compactness, especially when you consider that it was introduced in 1987. It wasn't the first commercially available DSP-based synthesizer- the Digital Music Systems DMX-1000 was back in 1980- but I believe this may have been the first to not require a separate front-end computer or keyboard.

Alessandro Cortini from NIN has a Buchla 700 in working condition.. among many other Buchla instruments. It is showcased in this video:
    th-cam.com/video/8mpaiiHPJaY/w-d-xo.html at 12:45 or so.
To my knowlege it is the only one on youtube.

You can also see it with an HxC Floppy Emulator in the Twin Peak TV series episode 8 by David Lynch when Nine Inch Nails played "She's Gone Away"

Hah! It's true that the ending sounds kind of truncated. But really I had nothing more to say and it was getting late so I just stopped there. ;)

Recently i got such Gotek floppy emulator for my Akai CD3000XL sampler, but I'm still figuring out how it works.
I got it to show 10 virtual floppy discs in the sampler, witch toke a few days because the read me is not very clear.. witch you need to copy from a zip file.
The Akai S3000XL sampler is one beast of a machine if it wasn't for floppy or SCSI discs.

You use the test tone to make a sine wave, which you then use for jungle basslines. No floppy required :) Treat the sampler as a synth, get creative.

@@drtitus I got the device more than 29 years ago, even the foil on the lcd screen was still on a few days ago, it sat all this time in the box.
How do i adjust the test tone to sine wave?
