I'm a teenage girl who watched the original She-Ra all throughout my childhood, because my mother wanted to share the joy it brought to her with me. The She-Ra theme song was the soundtrack to my early childhood, and even when I was too young to really think about how the show affected me, I enjoyed it.
The reboot is one of the best shows I've ever watched. The diversity is true and beautiful, not shoved in for woke points. The art is breathtaking, the sound design enchanting, and the characters wonderfully fleshed out.
The overarching theme of toxic/healthy relationships is amazing, it explores betrayal and confliction deeper than most "serious" pieces of media do. The characters are conflicted, bad people doing good things, good people doing bad things, and people turning from good to bad and bad to good in the way that real people are fluid and don't fit into "evil" and "good."
It's truly a piece of art, and the ways that it differs from the original make it so much better. I first went into the show expecting to be disappointed, but instead I fell in love with a whole new universe.
The redesigns of these characters are like breathing life into a statue. The original was (while an entertaining show for kids) sometimes bland. The way that each character now has their own mannerisms, style, and presence makes them even more lovable.
So, in conclusion, fuck the people who are mad that this show isn't all skinny white teenage girls in skimpy clothes who weren't given the luxury of a personality. The way this show expands on these beloved characters is wonderful, and it doesn't need their approval.

Why were people so surprised ? It’s just a remake.
What would be the point of a remake that looks exactly like the old one ? That has the exact same arcs ? The same analysis and development of the characters ?
Remakes are interesting because you get to see a new interpretation of the story, a different perspective on the characters and their actions.
I understand preferring the original, but it would be a waste to just redo the same show with barely any changes since you already have the original.
People were overreacting , honestly, because I don’t remember anyone complaining about the fact that the characters in Voltron looked different than the 80s show ( along with having quite different personalities and relationships)

Because it called genre and themeing the shows become popular because their limitations and focus and how their aimed at different people with different tastes , but now you have modern shows run by people with limited tastes running shows they hated they only care about owning the famous brand and ip or forcing their own genre onto others and hiding behind the term modernisation
Saw this back in the day when people calling themselves anime fans only truly liked shonen shows tried to force their limited likes onto everyone else calling every other show trash
Fans aren't interested in telling the same story their intested in stories that respect the genre,
The showrunners could have made their own show or made it a spin off but now the fandom will have a split fan base who will only watch their version of the show

    • @ChloHB
      @ChloHB 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

Carl Jackson Some fans maybe, but I personally like it when creators explore new themes and ideas WITHIN a same genre. Genres evolve all the time, and that’s a good thing, at least in my opinion. If they never do they become static and repeat over and over the same things in the same ways. You can change forms of a genre without changing its core.

I was happy with the art style and designs, I like how, for lack of a better word, some of the characters looked more big boned, it was refreshing to me, and seeing how each county looked different due to there environment and such, was another plus to me, the characters is what really hooked me though, Specially Adora, like her reaction to the first time seeing a horse, I melted with glee and luv'd her and the show and continued there. This show has something for everyone and overall I think the depth, general writing, and character development for all of the characters is leaps and bounds ahead of the original series of both He-Man and She-Ra. The original never made me FEEL something. Meanwhile Princess of Power managed to pull some tears out of me. 10/10 show. Although animals think ‘Sun Bears’ have dark fur (I think black) ‘Polar Bears’ have white fur.

To add to that east and south Asian skin tones are fair because they believe fair skin to be a sign of status as side from that their skin is often deeper in tone, Thai , Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia- people from these countries often have deeper complexions as unlike upper Europeans, they are outside more.

I absolutely love the old one, because it’s art style is breathtaking and little m egret up with it, and I do LOVE the reboot and watch like 17 episodes a day over and over again, but I think it’s kind of gross how some people *cough* Hajinae Hinata *cough* watches SOME of the clips or hasn’t even seen the show and decides which version is better. Only people that have actually watched the original can understand that. Although, in the re-boot Hordak is SO much better, especially how the creators even include him having a friendship, or perhaps a ramintical relationship with princess Entrapta. Also the diversity of the characters is just great!
BUT you can NOT properly judge something or compare to another without actually WATCHING it. The new She-Ra was actually BUILT off the old one, and so you need to understand that without the original, there would be no one now.

  • @syystomu
    @syystomu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +736

Definitely an improvement. Having all the characters look the same just makes things bland and makes it hard to tell them apart. I just get frustrated with cartoons that do that, it feels lazy and it expects me to do all the work learning the small differences between characters. And then you get all those hilarious situations where the characters go "hey, that picture looks just like you!" or something and the picture looks the same as everybody else. This hapoens so much, it's hilarious. And annoying.
Plus anybody who complains about diversity and representation can go to hell. Especially people who complain about it in kids shows. The She-Ra reboot handled it well and it was good and made the show more inclusive. It didn't do the awkward tokenism thing either, all the characters are written as people rather than representatives. There's literally nothing to complain about here.
Also re: fat characters: THEY LITERALLY HAVE MAGIC POWERS. Also people have this weird misconception about body fat automatically meaning people are weak and out of condition when it's not the case. Sure it's not the best fit for many sports (such as anything requiring a lot of jumping) but for strength competitions and for many martial arts, body fat is not a problem. You can be fat and have muscles. In fact a lot of actual strength competition athletes (as opposed to bodybuilders) are pretty stocky. Different body types are good for different kinds of action. Besides none of the characters are even close to being fat enough for it to be all that significant.

My best example is a female Olympic weightlifter (I forgot her name, but with some simple digging you’ll definitely find her) She, especially compared to other female Olympic athletes of different sports, is much heavier and “fatter” than the rest of them. But hell, she worked nearly nonstop for YEARS and is just as healthy as male bodybuilders. As for being thin and unhealthy, just look at most college students around schools and such, most look like they have healthy builds and body types, but not all of them participate in sports or outside activity, and probably are living off of snack foods and ramen. Not exactly the healthiest of meals.

Critique for the new She-Ra cartoon. Being someone from the 90's I grew up with a lot of cartoons from the 80's. But I've never had much passion / interest in She-Ra, so I have no nostalgic attachment to the original, so I can be as extensive as possible in my review.
But I give credit where it is due, and this will not make the mark any favor other than serve as a warning to the next creator who dares to reflect his own version of the program and for all creators on the dangers of trying to appeal to the superficial concepts of people like the so-called warriors of social justice who want to alienate the majority of humanity that lives today instead of worrying about the quality of their design and whether or not it is interesting is stimulating.
This show is more about satisfying the personal desires of its creator using the classic character as a platform (hi Noelle Stevenson), and this is very shameful and myopic for several reasons. The main heroine with a design and a personality like Adora is not bad, but the drawings of her alter ego leave nothing to the imagination, and honestly it is quite dull and masculine even (She-Ra). The original was a young woman who turned into a beautiful Amazonian heroine, while this new She-Ra transforms from a teenage into a bigger teenager, who looks like a giant dwarf with a lion wig.
The fact is that Adora is apparently more pleasant (well-designed) than the part of her that supposedly makes her a heroine (She-Ra). In addition, it seems to fix much more the underlying lesbian attraction of the creator of this cartoon (Noelle Stevenson) that is created between Adora and Felina (Catra) making it appear that it is practically everything that the creator wanted was to approach a lesbian adolescent romance. Is it about saving the world or keeping us in suspense how long will it take until these two resolve to come out of the closet and get it over with? With this and other LGBTQ nuances, it is difficult to define who the target audience is, and in each episode the protagonists really are children. But who is the target of the drawing? Are they even the little kids ?, Are the most liberal old fans ?.
It is strange that while they say that history has its foot on the ground and a certain magical realism, and everyone is at war, but the teenage villains do not seem so evil, and the heroes act as if they are having a date or going for a walk things got serious.
The character Entrapta was originally a villain in the old program, but here she started now as a princess and spontaneous friend who changing sides with a poor lie and scientific interests (this is strange and lazy).
Do not mention designs that are too disproportionate in almost all characters that are not Adora and Feline (Catra). Shimmering left the heroine with personality to be equal to She-Ra in reliability to suddenly be a short, fat brat who prides herself on disappearing. The Archer looks like the guy who's only there to be the comic relief, whatever. The shape of the faces of the other girls is very similar to dolls, but many do not match physically with the parts of their bodies. Another thing, think is if Ventania (She-Ra's horse) had little screen time when he was with She-Ra (Adora) every step of the way in the old drawing as He-Man and the Warrior Cat. Perhaps this could have distracted the public from its new and terrible design if she mounted her flying horse longer than she remained like a giant dwarf with a blonde wig. This new She-Ra design has the Korra Legend style mixed with Steven Universe. The former relied on terrifying stories and character development, but it does away with the popularity of its predecessor (Legend of Anng).
In conclusion, this new cartoon from the new She-Ra is another themed experiment to test if society is already liberal enough to have a LGBTQ heroine as the protagonist of a good show. The animation has more flaws than the script, the shading and the colors were not very good, they need to improve this, and the design did not please me anything, it draws life if in 1980 they had the ability to produce an animation with that quality was of if it was expected that this new one was at least the height, unfortunately this did not happen, the trait and very irregular in some scenes, it seems that it was done lazily, I kind of felt that at times it was copying SU.
Maybe you have a small chance of getting a second and third season, but that's all. Otherwise, with all that is established, there is no chance that this new She-Ra can go as far as or be as significant as the new "Voltron." This program (She-Ra) could give lessons on how not to adapt a classic franchise that cross generations. This design is more of a joke in bad taste than a franchise restart.

But the point was that the She-Ra characters were no more intended to be kids than the characters in GI Joe. Maybe that made then less relatable, but it was also supposed to make them inspiring. GUYS! GUYS! GUYS! Calm the heck down! This is a reboot, therefore it’s not supposed to be a carbon copy of the original. It’s supposed to look different, feel different, express itself differently. Both shows have so much to offer!! The reboot has lovable characters with a growing plot. Yes, the characters are teenagers! Kids! They’re kids!! That gives the show so much spunk and liveliness!! For all of those nostalgia people, I get it. The creators of the reboot altered many of the things you grew up with, but change is good! Change is refreshing and exciting! We have all been presented with a new show and we must give it a try. I, for one, enjoy it very much. Whether you like it or not is out of my control. Just please don’t not like it because it’s not like the original. It’s not. It’s different. It’s unique. I went into it with no bias, because I didn't watch She-Ra or He-Man when I was little (I was all about the Transformers, Ninja Turtles, and DuckTales)... And the only design I wasn't thrilled about was She-Ra herself, specifically her costume. Lukewarm at best, even after finishing the first season. She did get a more compete costume design in the last episode or so which I liked alot more, but it still feels kind of bland to me. How I'd fix it:
+ The shorts are kinda' awkward. I would have gone the Carol Danvers Captain Marvel route and made them just straight-up white pants, maybe ditch the skirt-ish bits.
+ Make the gold parts of her costume look shiny, metallic. Those parts of her costume always feel so bland and really bring it down for me.
+ Get more ornate with the gold piece design on her chest and with her headband/tiara, they both feel super lackluster, flimsy, and incomplete. Again, the design in the last episode helped, mostly for the tiara. I feel the torso, they kind of just got lazy with it.
+ The boots. Why are they like marshmallows? I say reshape them to be sleeker.

Speaking as someone who’s been super into designing his own characters, and as someone who went into the series blind even while being aware of the original, I love the designs.
Like you said with the original, they were pretty much designed to sell toys and such, and....well, considering the strict design philosophy they were made to follow, you can only tell who the character is by seeing them in action. Nothing is really evoked from the designs pretty much being the same in every aspect with only small changes that aren’t enough for them to stand-out from the crowd. I could probably go and watch the original 80s She-ra, and while I’d enjoy it for the cheesy one-liners and homey acting, I would not be able to recall who is who if I didn’t watch the reboot before it.
Memorabilityis the keyword here. And just having characters that look the same might be helped by memorable personality, but you would not get me being able to detail anyone besides She-Ra because, really, they’re all designed the same save for the male characters who, while I could likely tell by design, the philosophy is the same.
With the reboot, I wouldn’t have that problem, and didn’t as a first time viewer. Every character’s design is diverse, stand-out, and gives hints of what this character is like. I could pretty much infer that Bow was pretty much the heart of the trio from his design alone, and Mermista’s whole model screams apathetic but laidback. If your audience can actively identify a character by how they are in-character through their design alone, then you’ve made a memorable design
Because of that, coupled with how well each one serves the narrative and animation, I’m definitely gonna remember this more as, and I might be overselling it and I don’t care, the best reboot we’ve ever gotten, and I’m going to keep preaching for anyone looking to reboot to TAKE NOTES.

Really like how you brought up the topic of toy and character designs, and how the toys effected the characters back in the original show.
Honestly, the show runners and development team behind She-Ra, have really inherited an even greater challenge and task. And the unsatisfied fans are really making it all the more difficult.
See the 2002 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series was a massive game changer for the entire M.O.T.U. franchise as a whole. It set the bar/standards at an all-time high and sought to return to the roots of the storyline and provide broader explorations never reached in the original 1980s series. Including in origin stories for each character namely the familiar toyline faces.
The episodes (while mostly self contained stories) were well designed for character development. The world-building, was also just so breath taking, it's like every time you see Eternia and the characters, you get to see something new to enjoy/appreciate.
It should also be noted that the 2002 series also brought back several writers from the original 1980s series. All this made for an excellent reimagining of the classic series.

    • @shawnwarrynn8609
      @shawnwarrynn8609 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The 2018 She-Ra series is also trying to do the same thing. But with a completely new and different crew and production team. The showrunners, crew and development team aren't replacing or removing characters, setting and lore, like what was done in the 1990s series. They're just redesigning, altering and changing them to better fit the times, with new ideas and views on how the show should be done and what direction it should take.
The problem here is fans (both old and new) seem to be very against its concept/format, because of preconceived views of how a show and for that matter how a reboot/remake/reimagining of an old show should be done and what direction it should take.
Now this does not mean that all the ideas and views for the 2018 She-Ra series and directions it's taking are the best, in fact there still the possibility it could end up a as a failed series. But what we must understand is that we can't jump to conclusions just yet. Who knows maybe it'll be a excellent reboot/reimagining/remake.

Not to mention their new character designs fit their personality and are creative! different body types makes sense since glimmer only uses her powers and loses energy but doesn't work out. I prefer the original because those designs had more detail and felt less flat. I find it more realistic since it didn't have child soldiers. While yes it was cheaper to have characters with the same body types for toys, alot of soldiers have similar body types so it works.
If the new had more details, like adding more texture to hair or more shading to give them more of a 3 dimestional feel. Also, I think the shoes for most of the characters are too detailed for the outfits. The shoes should complement the outfit, not be a distraction. Also, a little bit of make up on the prom episode would've been great. Most of the girls worn make to dances when I was in school, even if they didn't regularly because it was a special occasion.
I actually think Bow's update look is a better homage to the original. The only thing I would really change is give him a mustache, even if it a fake one and let it be a running gag.

@Neil Brown actually the one only gay people shown in the show are bows dads in the second season in one episode the rest of episodes explore relationships, new princesses and more mysteries to discover. And what's from with being gay?

I remember when the designs were first released I was on the side that was offended because it looked drastically different from the original and too "boyish". I ended up entirely avoiding the show because of it, and only decided to start watching it after the show ended. I regret hard as shit because FUCK I loved the show. Scorpia and Entrapta are best girls. 🥺 And I'm so fucking happy I can get trans representation without it being played off as a joke for once!

i actually avoided the show for a bit bc i thought it was gonna be not my thing. I kinda just thought it was gonna be a rewash of an outdated show. I got instantly hooked on the first episode when i decided to give it a chance. I really love the diversity in the show. It became one of my favorite series really quickly and holds a special place in my heart.
should mention: i never knew anything about the original she-ra

I love new glimmer so much, I think is my favorite design.
    New She-Ra is also amazing.
    More than that, the personalities

I watched the old ones because of an uncle and I always thought they were adults living with their parents xD

A few years ago I stayed up late one night and He-Man came on. The next night I stayed up even later and found out that She-Ra was a thing. I haven't stayed up late for He-Man and She-Ra in forever since the channel I watched it on stopped showing them. When I heard about this show I didn't think I'd like it because of my attachment with the original show, but I just finished it today, and damn. I cried. I cried damn hard.
