You talked over my favorite part. You also talked over the entire Renfri origin story, only to then say: "I feel like that was an anti-climatic way to introduce that character..." Guys, if you miss 20% of the lines, no wonder why you´re confused. Shame on you :S:S

The short story Renfri comes from is essentially a dark and tragic twist on the snow white story. Her step mother had this magic mirror that told her Renfri would kill her and many others. The step mother went to the council of mages to have her investigated (Stregobor was sent) he watched her and determined she had been mutated by the black sun and wanted to have her isolated in a tower. The man that was sent to capture the girl raped her instead. She killed him and ran off learning to live as a thief to survive. The Stepmother sent assassins after her over and over filling Renfri with nothing but hate. When the Stepmother eventually died Stregobor was convinced it was Renfri. When Stregobor encountered Renfri he cursed her by turning her into a rock which was broken when a prince found her and had the curse removed. Renfri spent the rest of her life hunting Stregobor down until she eventually cornered him in blaviken and you saw the ending to the story on this episode. Renfri's story has to be one of my favorites from the short stories sapkowski wrote.
A witcher Has two swords one is made from Steel and that is used for humans/beasts like(wolfs, bears, etc) the other is a silver sword for monsters so when she said: "Magic doesn't work on me but silver does" she was saying by her doing this act she has chosen to be a "monster" right after she says that Geralt says ( silver is for monsters) showing he still doesn't believe she is a "monster" that's why the whole fight he is holding back trying to give her a way out.
Never read the books or played the games, but this is an amazing series. Also, I know now that these books came out before GOT.

Yep, first witcher short story was published in 1986 while the first book of A Song of Ice and Fire was published in 1996
Also GRRM and the author of Witcher stories are good friends. Calling Jon Snow the White Wolf was likely a nod to a author friend.

For the confusion, I will just point out two things from this episode:
1. Queen Calanthe told Ciri that she won her first battle when she was Ciri's age. When Renfri talked to Geralt, she mentioned that Calanthe had just won her first battle.
2. When Mousesack was trying to get Ciri to calm down, he mentioned that a long time ago, sorcerers used to lock little girls in towers and kill them. Kinda like what Stregobor had just been doing the last couple years with all the girls born under the Black Sun.
Make of that what you will. ;)

Spoilers galore, this becomes clear for most people in episode 4.
These are actually very nice and subtle hints, and also something that most people miss easily. If you miss them you will be confused during a few more episodes until the obvious realization of their implication for the story. It should be pretty obvious about now what those 2 hints meant, but anyway: mages and mutants do not age at the same rate as humans, or horses :)
Geralt is absolutely a mutant.
When he was a child he was subjected to brutal mutations brought on by powerful magic potions called "The Trial of Grasses"
Only 1/3 of the boys subjected survive, the others dying torturous painful deaths.
This mutation changes their eyes to be more catlike, enhances their strength and agility, as well as their senses. Geralt can see incredibly well in any light, smell like a dog, and hear a pin drop a quarter of a mile away.
So yes, he is actually a mutant.
he also should be using potions to enhance certain abilities.
His heartbeat is also much slower than a normal human's

Renfri already gave her name at the bar though, so you were supposed to realize who she was in the wizard’s tower. And also when Geralt said her name again near the stream. That would have been more climactic.

Also like you heard, this show is a little confusing early on (intentionally) if you aren’t paying attention, but that shouldn’t be a problem since you guys are reacting to this show and pretty much staring at the screen the whole time.

Withers are mutants created by intense alchemical processes and consumption of mutagenic compounds. They have cat-like eyes to see in darkness or blinding light (that's what i miss in this show), increased strength, speed, reflexes, endurance and resistance to diseases.Also they can perform simple combat magic in the form of signs (Geralt used Aard sign in this episode).
...and allow them to drink enhancing potions that would kill normal humans, it also slows a Witchers aging significantly (Geralt being around 90)
These mutations can have extreme side effects though, like death, insanity, blindeness, or Geralts white hair/ albinism, a result of additional experiments on him, or indeed emotionlessness, which is how the rumour was born that Witchers don't feel. Geralt does though, though not entirely humanly...

Geralt also tried to use the Axii sign on Renfri in this episode, but Renfri said it didn't have any effect on her.
Also gives the Witcher heightened Gwent abilities.
Exactly Witcher's signs are basic magic, not on the level or power of mages, but they can be performed instantly without have to establish a conduit first, so they're useful in fast paced combat.
After Renfri saw Geralt as an obstacle to her revenge, she was set to force his hand. Renfri was not only consumed by her troubled past and her thirst for revenge, she was probably cursed/possessed/mutated for one reason: before her battle with Geralt, he attempts to dissuade or disable her using one of the 5 magic "signs" (spells) that he can cast, that spell/sign is called Axii and it works in a few different ways, but in general it can temporarily alter someone's state of mind, somewhat similar to a Jedi mind-trick but with a broader range of applications...
Anyway, the spell does not work on her, and she says so herself; even before that she probably predicts her own death, or at least she predicted Geralt's stoning which happens after he kills her, and her last words are about his prophesied destiny. Although she doesn't seem to be evil, it is plain that she is ready to burn the world to the ground to exact her revenge on Stregobor.
And this is why her death was bitter-sweet; until the very end there was no reason to doubt neither Renfri nor Stregobor, in fact both argued to Geralt to be the lesser evil in the conflict, and both proved Geralt's point: _Evil is evil. Lesser, greater, middling… It's all the same._
also, her sheer fighting ability simply isn't natural. Normal humans generally can't stand up to Geralt... though there is a certain bounty hunter who will appear in future seasons but I'm not so sure he's a normal human either even though it doesn't sound like he was deliberately created.

fun fact: Geralt ate the deer
Geralt's eyes change from yellow to black when he takes potions (which heighten his already super-human senses and strength).
Geralt takes potions when he has to fight strong monsters to give him an edge, but they are highly poisonous so you see the effects on his face (changing of the eye color, veins popping, paler skin than usual)

21:06 I think the Curse of Black Sun is just a superstition invented by mages. They used the curse as excuse to kill young princesses and make magical experiments on their bodies without retaliation from their kingdoms.

The black sun "curse" becomes like a self fulfilling prophesy. The antagonizing of the girls means that they end up doing bad things. Just like in the "blood and wine" DLC from The Witcher 3 game.
I don't think I agree with the death by blade explanation, I think its because Nilfgard are known to take no prisoners n torture people while killing them so takin poison was considered an easy death..

Eliminating a surplus of princesses does a lot to stabilize and control a lose confederacy of kingdoms. As we see the mages acting as advisors to the crowns are really in control and would not want to avoid succession claims that they did not control.
His horse Roach is named after a type of fish called a roach, not the insect called a cockroach.
The novels were written originally in Polish and the horse's name is Plołka (I might have the spelling wrong), which only means the fish. But when it's translated to English it's called Roach which is more confusing because that word most commonly refers to the insect, not the fish.
Geralt always rides a mare instead of a stallion, which works well in Polish since Plołka is a feminine noun. He's had many horses over the years but always gives them the same name.
I've actually been learning Polish partly so that I can read the novels in their original language. They're great stories.
Geralt is a Witcher, underwent an extreme mutation as a child so yes he is a Mutant.
His eyes were black because Witcher are able to take extreme potions/elixers that help him battle different type of monsters
Renfri isn't a she wolf, however she is also technically a mutant. Stregabor was telling Y'all the story behind her in the beginning
Renfri was a beast in swordplay, but no she wasn't holding her own..... Geralt was holding back so much because he didn't wanna kill her.
Cirilla didn't know she had powers, they just came out because her emotions were at an an extreme.

@@DosCavazos and also about Geralts magic power - he uses a type of magic called Signs. They are pretty basic and weak in comparison to full blown mage spells, yet using them does not requre massive magical potential, training or complicated spells. Just a simple gesture and concentration. Witchers uses them as a kind of sidearm during combat.
I think that guy that stabbed himself was committing their equivalent of Seppuku or the act of falling on ones own sword. An honorable death for someone as apposed to death by poison.

I feel like the father took the knife to the throat during the mass suicide because he wanted to feel like he was dying like a man rather than potentially feel like dying like a coward via whatever toxic vial they were given. Just kinda how i understood that logic
For those that read the books, would know the author has said this was his favorite short story, it’s a play on Snow White and the 7 dwarfs, Renfri is Snow White, she has 7 men with her. Stregabore with the apple are examples of the two stories!!!!
What’s most important about this series is the time jumps, just remember anytime the story jumps to different characters like Geralt and Renfri, to the Queen Clanthe that these are happening at different times, you will notice by the end of the season when they tie it all together for you!!

As for Renfri she was just a human. However she was born under the black sun along 60 or so other girls.
Essentially it was a prophecy that a child, female specifically, born under the black sun will bring waste to the earth. She was just a badass because of what she had to deal with being prosecuted.
That makes the scene so much more complex. Because now Geralt killing her is now seen as a grey area. You have a Mage killing girls/women purely off a prophecy. A women actively seeking to kill the mage in revenge (ignoring that she was hunted down 1st). And finally whatever of those 2 evils you chose from there is a potential prophecy that Renfri can bring forward.
Geralt tried for no one to die but we saw how that worked out. Also that's why he didn't cut his head off, he is NOT an evil person even when he has every right to be.
but, she is also resistant to magic and a supernaturally good fighter, and may also have some kind of ability to influence others. So she probably is mutated, but being a mutant doesn't make her a monster. IMO Geralt doesn't want the autopsy done because he doesn't believe that what happened to her should be justified by her mutations, even if she is mutated.

Did anyone catch that renfri's stepmother was the one who told the wizard the evil things renfri had supposedly done. Seams like a very convinient way to get rid of a princess thats the first in line to a the throne and make way for your children to inherit the throne if you ask me.

Also not very knowledgeable in The Witcher world, but I loooooooove these medieval shows...the armors and combat and outfits and all. I'm thinking I'm in on this...always enjoyed Cavill, and seeing him in this era feels good. This series is very much Game of Thrones-esque in the way of numerous characters to get to know and no one is sure who is loyal to who/who can be trusted. Keep up the great work!

If it sucks just as much as this season did I won't be happy. Knowing Netflix they'll make all the witchers black to go for "equality" even if it fucks up the entire worldbuilding.
I absolutely love when couples react. We get really good banter and back and forth perspectives. This will be an awesome journey. I wish season 2 would come quicker, but they gave us a gem with this series. It is #1 in the world right now. I gave the show a shot a week back, and i absolutely loved it! I can definitely see this one becoming a huge budget series like GoT as long as they keep writing good episodes. If you wanted suggestions on other shows to react to, i would suggest Chernobyl on HBO. Best show of all time in my opinion. I subscribed! Thanks for sharing the video you two! :)

In the case of Geralt's mare, "Roach" is actually the name of a species of European sweet water fish, it doesn't come from "cockroach" as many Americans think. xD
"I wonder if he kills humans, I know he kills monsters" o dear sweet Kacee lol. Actually theres a scene in the games that I really enjoy where he essentially says that the worst monsters hes ever killed have been if the human variety
It's just like GoT. All the names will be familiar, I remember always calling people off their physical traits lol. As far as reviews the people who like the Witcher whether its the games or books gave it very high reviews. Ik you two arent familiar but think of this like GoT season 3, slow but sets the pace for season 4-5. Next season will be more of what you expect from this genre.
All in all you don't need to know about this at all, it will make it a lot slower since you don't know what the show is building towards like the people who have played/read the material but like you said if you like the genre it will have a big payoff if you keep watching. Glad you guys enjoyed this episode! Hope you guys fall in love with the characters as much as I did from reading and playing the games!

From a book reader, the first season is based on the first two books, you have to remember that there are three timelines until the end of the first season. It's because of their long lives.
The introduction of the Butcher of Blavikan
To be fair to Refri her main target is Stregabore who has persecuted and hunted her for her whole life for Nothing more than the circumstances of her birth. Gerault saying "Silver is for monsters" is a reference to the fact that witchers have two swords, one of steel for everyday used and one for Silver which is super effective against the super natural. By saying that Gerault is telling Renfri that he still believes that she can do better, that she is not the monster that Stregabor paints her to be, the last thing Gerault wants to do is kill her but he will if she gives him no choice. Hence his anger towards Stregabor after.

If you guys keep talking during a conversation between the characters, you're gonna miss important details which will makes things confusing. Example of that is not knowing who the sorcerer told geralt to kill until she showed up. Her name was revealed earlier but you missed it.
I've watched the series already, loved it. Going to enjoy watching you guys react to this, and season 4 The Last Kingdom coming soon. Renfri I believe is good, bummed she got killed. Of course no spoilers from me.

Geralt definitely has emotions. The fact people think they dont is a myth that the Witchers dont correct because it helps their purposes if people think they are killing machines. It makes people afraid to cross them even though the people hate witchers.
However, Geralt very much has human emotions. Hes just great at hiding them

I just finished watching this show, so glad you reacted to it! It'll be interesting to see where you pick up on certain things along the way. I hadn't rewatched it since finishing and had totally forgotten the mage we met here was Stregobor.
Kings/queens that went into battle were always protected by a Royal Guard in real history. They are protecting her while she mourns Eist.

Renfri is supposed to be a dark Snow White. Evil Stepmother with a magic mirror tries to kill her. A hunter takes her into the wood. Her followers are supposed to be gnomes, but there are human in the show. But there is 7 of them still. The sorcerer in the Town, even has the bright red apple in his hand (and though the show does not show it, she was poisoned by an apple in the books).
And as for his Eyes, when a Witcher fights a monster, they drink one or more type of potions. These potions have a side effect of giving him black eyes,

Witchers are people who were forced to mutate to fight monsters. Geralt is just the best of the best.
They have minor magic powers called Signs: Axii, Igni, Aard, Yrden, and Quen. He used Aard in the fight which is like a telekinetic blast

Everything will come together.
All monsters created by magic are vulnerable to silver. Werewolves are just the most famous in universal lore. It's why Geralt has a regular sword and a silver one. Fair warning (though without spoilers) that there are actually 3 different timelines happening in the show that will eventually converge. Ciri is the present. Geralt starts in the past and moves forward. And another character you will meet in episode 2 starts even further back. Just keep an ear out for context clues.
The reason why the noble takes 2 poisons from the guard and not 3 is because he leaves one for the guard, allowing the guard a way out should he wish to take it. The guard would be expected to fight to his death on the battlefield, the noble realizing the savagery Nilfgaard possess, gifts the guard a way of taking his own life painlessly for his service. @Dos Cavazos
Just a bit of advise as people seem to have issues with this series in terms of timeline. The scenes of Geralt and Yennefer are set in the past up until the final 2 then the scenes with Ciri are what's in the "present" of the shows timeline.

This show is being based off of a polish fantasy book series and has already been adapted into a very successful video game series. Personally I’ve played the 2nd and 3rd game of the trilogy and let me tell you that the third game is an absolute masterpiece, the second is pretty great as well. However the game series is quite different to the books it adapted from, therefore the show will be a lot different to a lot of people already familiar to this world and it’s characters. If you haven’t played the games however I highly recommend it. At least the 3rd game.

In the game…npc’s often tell you to get new clothes, hence why they gave a little nod to that in the show. Also Henry Cavill is a fan of the games if you weren’t aware.

Dont worry about how you react. Just watch it and honestly react like you did.Tips, just watch the character introduction trailer for a hint about the main characters in the story. I havent played the game or read the novel, but after watching it 2 episode back2 back. Kinda make sense in a way.
By the way characters like renfri and stregabor are side characters and this show is based off the first two witcher books which are short stories so they aren't going to do much character building with characters like renfri to make you care its all about geralt yen and ciri the next season which is based on the blood of elves is going to have a more direct linear story so its easy to follow so this first season is like a little demo for next season where the shit really starts happening its an introduction basically
