    I think this tune is a perfect example of how Shorter's compositions often seem to break all the normal rules of harmony and yet also seem to just work perfectly to the ear. I'm often baffled by looking at a Shorter chart and trying to make logical sense of the chord progression, but if I just let go of all that and just listen, the tunes make so much sense and are just so cool. He was an absolutely genius.

      He has a unique sound and concept. He was prolific added a lot of original music to the jazz repertoire, not only for Miles Davis , but for the world of jazz musicians.

    This tune was my favorite in college. The blues section allowed for my improv mistakes in the A section to just wash away and it always gave me a little confident boost for the second time around

    Another great piano lesson from the master! One general point I've learned from all these videos:- Every note matters. every note does something or not if you leave it out, (whether in the right or left hand). Seems kind of obvious I know but I've found choosing which notes to play (or not play) much more carefully really helps.

      @@KentHewittpiano88 Working a song with some of the changes I learned from you.. I like that pattern 1-4-3-6-2-5-1....I am more of songwriter than a performer www.malleymusic.net Tonight I am going to try to write a bridge to that pattern thought of going down a step and repeating .. I study you a lot I just retired from teaching.

    Kent you have to do a breakdown of Goodbye Porkpie Hat which is very similar in that it’s an altered blues. Great video as always my friend.

    I love Wayne. Used to listen to Speak No Evil over and over. Kind of out style but still melodic. Think he tapped Trains sweet side

    • @KentHewittpiano88

      Trans sweet side...nice. Trane played more inside ....interesting that way.

    I've always thought Mason & Hamlin's dug Wayne Shorter because they're darker than a Steinway yet very rich and that suits Shorter's Harmonies.

    Thanks for the video, enjoyed it and it has helped me learn this tune. One question, or clarification: I noticed you said the chord is Ab-7 the last half of measure 2, but then you play Abma7 in the progression when it comes around again in measure 6. Is this correct? The Abmi7 sounds cool, but when I listen to Shorters original recording I hear Herbie playing voicings of Abma7 in measure 2. Do my ears deceive me?

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably are right and it's an Abmaj7. I haven't listened to the recording in years so I credit you. Shame on me...I used a score. I'm sure you are right that it should be maj7...kudos to you, bro. Back in the day we all learned from the original recordings, which is the best way. Watch my new vid coming out soon about not trusting fakebooks!

    Great help to me! This tune is giving me some trouble. Trying to rationalize it in Bb has opened doors on the "A" section.
