All the characters are expies of the Mane 6 because this game had its origin as an MLP fangame called Fighting is Magic. Hasbro eventually sent them a c&d when the game started getting serious attention, but then Lauren Faust herself offered to design them a whole new original roster and setting. And if I recall, the Skullgirls team loaned them the game engine.
I don't think I've ever laughed at a video so much. Was so much fun to watch you play this. Hopefully we can see more in the future :) keep up the good work

It's pretty tough and the typical button mashing method for most fighting games didn't really work (for me at least). If nothing else the game has taught me to combo better and appreciate how much work was put into the game.

No. The character’s moveset’s are inspired by the Fighting is Magic roster, but it’s a completely different product with no ties to MLP whatsoever. It’s an extremely well made game that stands on it’s own. I recommend getting it, even if you aren’t good at fighting games.

Well, for one, after the cobra is a bear. And it's super tough compared to the rest, since it can grapple and charge. Next, to access Pom's moveset, all you had to do was pause the game and scroll down. You can even customize buttons. Rarity is the deer awhile Rainbow is the dragon horse.
There's tons of personality in them. Just look at their animations and hear their voice clips (without Vanna here commentating over them, obviously). They also have backstories written out on the official website.

At 5:16, you were asking what was the animal in the background during Pom's fight with her inverted self. That is an Okapi, a creature with legs of a zebra and the neck (in length) of a giraffe. They may looking a bit weird at first, but I assure you they are quite adorable.

It has changed a bit in a year. The character fighting logos during the fight, finished animations. Like when one of the characters win they have an animation for their lines.
It’s an upgrade from FiM, they’ve shed the restrants they had from both the limited engine and the owned characters. They sre now able to create a smooth, beautiful fighter with the ability to fully market it without the worry of a C+D.

well the developers paid amout of Money for Lab Zero giving the permission to use their Engine, thats why the animations and the backgroud are smooth.
Actually Lab Zero gave them the engine for free thanks to a crowdfund stretch goal. But yes, it's the same engine as Skullgirls.
Since that game had Beowulf in it, I'm hoping that this one will add someone like Sleipnir.
