  • Negotiating a book deal is not all about the advance! Literary agents Jessica Faust and James McGowan talk about all of the things that literary agents and authors consider when negotiating a book deal with a publisher.
BookEnds is dedicated to making publishing a book traditionally a more transparent process, and it starts with these videos!
    ****
Jessica Faust’s love for books is what first brought her to open BookEnds Literary Agency. It is her desire to be an advocate for all authors that pushed her to create her blog, the BookEnds TH-cam channel and to maintain a vibrant presence on Twitter.
Jessica is proud to have grown BookEnds to an agency that represents authors of all genres for children and adults, allowing her to reach more readers and help more authors and illustrators achieve their dreams.

James McGowan is a Literary Agent at BookEnds and writer for children. He began working with the agency as an intern in the summer of 2015, and basically never left. He represents a talented group of authors and illustrators working in everything from board books to middle grade graphic novels. He also works in adult nonfiction, and adult mystery and suspense projects. James is the author of GOOD NIGHT OPPY, which is available now.

Great video! Was waiting for a segment for debut authors in this one. What deal scenarios are unique to debut authors? Request a video on debut authors. Cheers!

I agree, a few tips for debut authors please, especially the advances to be expected. Also, we have heard/ read, of very successful debut authors who have signed six number deals, but please tell us which authors or books these refer to. I like Colleen Hoover's style of writing and she's successful in any genre she writes because she has a loyal fan base who buy anything she writes. To me, that's real success, and I have different story ideas which will also fall into different genres.

    Hello Jessica & James
What is the typical length of synopsis for picture books? Is it 500 words? How is that possible that the synopsis is longer than pb?

Speaking of Playlists...would you be interested in setting up a 'Best of the Best' collection for authors like myself to use as study? The best Query video, best Negotiations Details video, etc. Maybe put them in a chronological order to kind of show how the development of publishing takes all the way to book on the shelf in stores aspects. I have saved up so many videos from your collection that I've lost track, but I've saved the best ones. Shoot, maybe I should make said Playlist of the Best BookEnds collection and pass it to you for everyone else to study from.

The mention of different english publishing rights has me wondering about submitting to agents if you use a different form of english? I’m Canadian and our publishing industry is small, so submitting to American agents is normal, but would I need to convert the submission to American english? Or simply say that it’s in Canadian english?

    • @BookEndsLiterary
      @BookEndsLiterary  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You don't have to convert to American English-the agent likely won't care (or will help edit if they do care). Once it sells to a publisher, the publisher's copyeditors might convert it to fit their style guides, but that would likely be their job and not yours!

@@BookEndsLiterary Thanks so much for replying! I’m relieved, as I don’t know all the differences and converting to a similar, yet distinct, English seemed very daunting. 🙂

I’ve been offered contracts by hybrid publishers. I submitted because their website would say they offer traditional publishing too.
I’ve never taken any hybrid contracts.
What’s your advance with these types of publishers? Should an author stay away from them? I’ve also noticed that self-publishing is cheaper than working with a hybrid publisher. Thank you

We don't typically work with hybrid publishers, so I'm not sure we can provide helpful feedback here! You might want to try to find author communities online who have experience with this!

Doesn’t an editor have to convince a roomful of gatekeepers to publish a book? Does an author receive the advance from an editor or pub house? Before or after an editor convinces the house to publish your book? (I hope my question is clear. Something you said made me wonder) Thanks.

The editor often does have to get the book past their acquisitions team, which can include other editors and members of the sales/marketing teams. Once it's approved, though, they work with their team to put together the initial offer. So, editors often don't have full say in the advance they're allowed to offer, but they will be the ones to present the offer to the agent. And when the agent comes back with a counteroffer, the editor will have to bring it back to their team to see what's feasible. Once negotiations are complete and advance and other terms are agreed upon, a contract is typically sent along by the editor and/or the contracts department (depending on the size of the publisher) and then the details are negotiated between the agent and the contracts person. Hope this clarifies the process a little!

I started putting my name and contact information on publisher's websites, etc. about a month ago. Now I'm getting endless "send us money and we'll publish your book" calls.
