I've never been into BMWs but I always liked the older 745s. I remember a late 90's model that came strolling past me on I-95 south of Jacksonville, back around 2010. Gorgeous car, black, elegant, subtle muscle. Not ostentatious, just an immaculate ride you look at and go "oh yeah, that's a nice car." Almost made me want to give up my Subaru Outback and get one. Almost. I paced it into Daytona doing 90 mph, just quietly purring on down the road.
You must DREAD seeing someone coming in with their "bargain" early 2000's German car they got for a few grand and you have to be the one to break the news what repairs/parts will cost, I would love to own a late model BMW/Porsche but when I shopped I would go around to the repair/shop portion of the dealer and ask what an oil change, tune up would cost and quickly learned what I could afford to buy I couldn't afford to own. On my 6th Vette after a number of JDM products. Thanks for showing me how right I was by your thorough and entertaining videos. Very classy sir.....
If you're willing/able to do your own wrenching it's not so bad. Parts cost can be a little high, but the labor is what gets you. I'm familiar with the Corvette tax as well, but most of the regular maintenance items are pretty reasonable.
@@channell11 Never owned a BMW, but i've experienced german engineering firsthand. Helped my dad to replace the radiator in an old 2003 VW Jetta, had to take damn near the entire front end off just to get it in/out, we swore that we would never buy a german car again after that xD

This kind of cars (m cars ecc) are for people who can afford it and have the money to maintain them. The problem with people is that they buy an bmw or any other expensive brand and when they have to 💵💵💵 they don't and then start complaining how unrelayable the car is + some abuse the car non stop like is a race car. Doesn't work that way. Those cars are not made for everybody but some people just don't get it.
I see people mentioning seat covers. I'm not sure about high end dealerships like porsche, bmw, and merecedes, but I think it is very rare for shops to use seat covers here in the US. Not fair to knock him for that when no one here does it.

Hall Effect sensors detects ferris metal. It actually has a small magnet in it. The sensor measures the change in magnetic field. The tone ring in the wheel sensor is just a toothed metal ring.
I always hear people confuse the relationship between engineers and designers. Designers come up with a design, while the engineer does the math to make it work. The designer said something like, "Could we make this work so we can lower the profile this much so we can have longer control arms/lower hood/ longer passenger compartment/whatever?" The engineer rolled his/her eyes and said, "Yeah, we could make it work that way... but... heat, working life, maintenance..." Marketing and administrative knows the data that the average ownership on a BMW is three years, so they said, "Great! Let's go with it!"
My most hated car might be 5 years and older Minis. Their design and compressing everything in a small space compounding with turbo engine makes the car a ticking bomb.
The pcv valve is what caused the other upper leaks because it is not allowing proper pressure. Also the alternator issue is a sucky one but qgain often due to people following BMW long service times. That is a no no because those gaskets start failing.
The Car Ninja has the calmness at work of a brain surgeon, which makes him credible and trustworthy as a mechanic and contrasts with the nervous energy of a Hoovie. I like the laid-back vibe of this video and will subscribe.
You guys have issues… ‘Happier’? This shop is cleaner and more professional-looking, but that’s what a ‘certain type’ of Euro-car snob…er…owner demands from a mechanic. He probably commands higher rates as well. If anything, the environment at Omega is way more relaxed and easy-going. ‘Look like shit’? I’ve never seen Omega look dirty or unkempt. It’s a much larger, more open space, and he stores parts in the same area as the cars… It’s a mechanics shop. What do you expect? A hospital? ‘Wizard is a clown’? Who cares about his personality if he’s a competent mechanic? ‘Wizard is sleazy’? When? I know my way around cars, and he pretty much tells it like it is… You also realize these guys are fairly friendly with each other outside of their shops, don’t you? 🤦♂️

Worked on many an N62 here in the UK and I can completely attest too what your saying, known for their many oil leaks, the time needed to do the seals on that alternator bracket, PCV valves perishing and most bmw petrol engines don't like Aftermarket spark plugs, also seen plenty of poorly fitted valve cover gaskets leading to misfire issues when warm, the best one is when I find people have got the vanos solenoid connectors the wrong way. Great video though, no dramatised segments, just straight up talk, reminds me of myself a little lol
I can't laugh hard enough at the roof basket on a mini street car oh I'm sure, that car goes on so many overlanding journeys, you couldn't even joke about the necessity for extra storage space. 🙄
It's a good thing I didn't know you back when I had my 2002 745li. I abandoned the car when a $1500 coolant pipe broke. I had already poured too much money in to that thing to make it worth fixing again. LOL
I think the M54 Inline-Six is one of the most durable engines that BMW made. I have it in my 05 E46 330i and never an issue besides the usual hoses for coolant and power steering. The disa went once and a valve cover gasket. Good silky smooth engine. 👌
I have owned three German cars. When I lived in Germany I owned a BMW320, then when I got back to the states I owned a BMW 633CSI, and Finally a Mercedes SLK320, ALL three had constant electrical problems. Fix one and another would pop up. The SLK had intermittant starting problems (Not battery or starter related). Sometimes when it wouldn't start and when I turned the key my garage door would open and close with the turn of the key.
Had a 745Li. An amazing car to drive ,great looks and stance on the road ,but too many gremlins. I got sick of hearing that irritating chime on start up that something is wrong.
The PCB valve get that expensive in Germany, too. Bad thing is that there is no good aftermarket part available. Sometimes you will find Bosch, which is the same as factory. But they are hardly to find here in good old Germany
The gasket under alternator's mounting is to have the same engine block for both versions: with and without oil cooler. The only difference is the adaptor and the gasket but the block remains the same. Long story short: $$$$
God damn! I have to say you were the last and newest of the Hoovie group I subscribed to - but man ... I love the way this video is made - so clean, quiet and focused on the technical core of the matter. I don't want to be a racist or anything, but this video lacks the American style of being big, praised, cool, dumb, etc. It's just so relaxing, but on the other hand full of technical content. Rather, it looks like it was filmed in Switzerland or something. GOOD WORK. I am looking forward to the next one.
I only repair rust, even my heart sinks when I see someone else "had a go" before me - it guarantees the job will be twice the PITA it would have been if they'd just left it alone. Bit like scraping off endless silicone the last person used..
I would go as far as mid 90s, after that all the new stuff went downhill hard in less than 10 years. Many people would praise the E46 but they forget most of the internals are based on the M50, which was their last truly reliable engine. Even with the improvements the cars started to have really nasty issues on especially on their sporty variants and everything around the block (especially cooling) would fall apart left and right.
@@MiGujack3 exactly. I think that M52 was still very good and reliable engine, even m52tu but little harder and little more expensive to maintain. For me last good bmw was e36. E39 and e38 are way more modern, safer, comfortable and still good cars, but way more electronics and everything. E46s are little bit shitty but i still like how it looks and probably will keep mine some time :)
The engineer who designed this car didn’t get fired…in fact he got promoted for designing a car with built in failure which in turn brings BMW great money through parts and labor!

Johnny reminds me so much of myself.
Millionaire? Really ? Damm how much they paying you guys ? I’m interested in becoming a mechanic.
@@ThatSkaterKTS I was making bmw dealership a ton of my based on my skills and education from UTI and finally went out on my own.
So worth it. Find what your good at being a tech and run with it. Apparently even if your somewhat reliable as a mechanic. You will make a ton of money
@@ajsrolls-roycegarage4714 did u start your own independent shop ? How much did your schooling cost ?
Your are a amazing mechanic! I have improved over time with a lot of mistakes, It is extremely gratifying to fix older vehicles, keeping them on the road.
The German automotive engineers credo "WHY MAKE IT SIMPLE WHEN WE CAN MAKE IT DIFFICULT"!
I see you never worked on French cars then :P They are the absolute worst.
@@julianh9347 Especially Citroens I reckon.

Love the videos and thank you, car ninjas and shop, for allowing us to see their skills!
I love seeing how a scanner is not the end all be all. Many times you’ll get a generic code and you gotta use your noggin and experience to figure out what is going on! Unfortunately, many shops don’t have that skill and will just throw new parts at a problem...
You're such an awesome me and person. A man of truth, honestly and integrity. Thanks for always reminding me to be a good person.
You know a car is bad when the Car Ninja or Car Wizard hates it.
Great channel, no unnecessary music or transitions just pure work, remind me a lot of m359 restorations another great channel.
Seeing Mr. Car Ninja working brings genuine quality to youtube. He presents honesty, and craftmanship, and skill all in one.
Love watching a master at work!
Excellent video.
But, I am so pleased to see how Ben is doing in his first year with you guys.
You guys are doing it right.
I like.
Kind regards,
South Africa.
Great Videos from a very well organized shop, showing a great mechanic and his motivated team. I really love this content!
A German car enthusiast...
Thank you for NOT cheesing with fake dramatic moments.
i feel like my dad must have gotten literally the only one built well, a 2005 745li put 314,000 miles on it with zero issues, except trans started slipping so he finally traded it in lol
Seeing someone who knows what hes doing is a pleasure. Almost makes me want to own a BMW. Almost.
Buy a new one and get rid of it before the warranty expires. Only way to own one and keep your peace of mind
@@edjackson4389 The key to owning any older car is a mechanic you can trust (maybe yourself, maybe someone like Car Ninja or Car Wizard). For some cars this is easier to find than others. I'd rather own a 20 year old BMW with Johnny working on it than a 10 year old Toyota serviced by a lazy crook.
Steady on!
@@PsRohrbaugh Lazy crook = Scotty Kilmer
@@PsRohrbaugh I hear ya buddy, and I would agree with you on most brands, but BMW is NOT one of them. After owning 3 of them (2 used 1 new) I know that cost of regular repairs quickly outweighs the value
Nice video, Car Ninja & crew! Amazing to have thousands of views and not a single dislike! This may even be the first time I've seen that (hope I didn't just jinx it).
Superb video, great to see the dedication to fixing problems not just throwing parts at the situation.
Glad you showed up in my feed Car Ninja. Enjoy your work.
*I love watching car repair videos. I should have listened to my Dad in the late 90s and taken his advice and help to be an auto mechanic. I love fixing things and troubleshooting...I fixed computers for like 15+ years and know I would have loved auto repair. Oh well, I'm an old man now and manager an insurance office. YEEPEE!*
Absolutely GREAT JOB, Johnny!!!
Proud owner of a 2012 BMW 750Li and absolutely love it, they are high maintenance cars but drive like no other, if you do all the work on them yourself like I do then it’s worth it for sure
Those cars are not made for everybody but some people just don't get it.
great job, did a few BMW valve stem seals without removing the head.. Took me 3 weeks %^^%$^%$
Great content! Most professional shop I’ve ever seen!
Here from Hoovie! Stayed for being a BMW Nerd and lover! Keep up the awesome work and content! One love! ✌
Ninja is a true great mechanic who also happens to have a TH-cam channel!!
I see people mentioning seat covers. I'm not sure about high end dealerships like porsche, bmw, and merecedes, but I think it is very rare for shops to use seat covers here in the US. Not fair to knock him for that when no one here does it.
Outstanding work, God bless.
It’s so so crazy I just did the water pipes and hoses under the intake manifold for a customer at the dealership I work at on a 2002 745Li, had 146,000 miles, junk cars
Do all videos like this, no music, steady shots. Very relaxing
Wish I could take my M2 to you for service. Love your attention to detail and skill.
Hoovies Garage + Car Wizard + Car Ninja = TOP BLOKES
Hall Effect sensors detects ferris metal. It actually has a small magnet in it. The sensor measures the change in magnetic field. The tone ring in the wheel sensor is just a toothed metal ring.
Save Ferris!
That has to be it. I read somewhere that almost 80% of BMWs are leased. They literally design them to run great for the first lessee and no one else.
My most hated car might be 5 years and older Minis. Their design and compressing everything in a small space compounding with turbo engine makes the car a ticking bomb.
A happy chappy at work, honesty is the best policy, great video again.
You weren't showing the cars running after you fixed them. It's a small change but makes the videos much more satisfying to watch
He did show them running, but not driving. What would the difference be? 🤔
I wish I could bring my 04 645Ci to you Ninja!! You guys do such great work!!
I love guys like car ninja and car wizard. Seeing honest mechanics restores my faith in the business
The pcv valve is what caused the other upper leaks because it is not allowing proper pressure. Also the alternator issue is a sucky one but qgain often due to people following BMW long service times. That is a no no because those gaskets start failing.
Wow, another real nice video. You guys are getting more and more professional at making films. At least two thumbs up for this one. Keep that up.😃👍
Nice chap. He deserves to do well. Good luck to him from Thailand.

The Car Ninja has the calmness at work of a brain surgeon, which makes him credible and trustworthy as a mechanic and contrasts with the nervous energy of a Hoovie. I like the laid-back vibe of this video and will subscribe.
Sucb a different, happier work environment than the "wizard." The owner's vibe sets the tone.
for starters, johnny and mike's shop doesn't look like shit
Wizard is a clown.
When? I know my way around cars, and he pretty much tells it like it is…
You also realize these guys are fairly friendly with each other outside of their shops, don’t you? 🤦♂️
Johnny and his whole crew are 1st class, my favorite people to work/hang with 💯
@@vw5056 Have never thought his rates to be high for a shop willing to do the work that he does. And he was probably right about that rodent nest. Not his job to do, really, if he didn’t do it off-camera. Remember, these videos get much better results with some drama thrown in. More about entertainment than information.
“I call those lawn mower spark plugs” I say the same damn thing. I work at Honda they don’t like them either !
I can't laugh hard enough at the roof basket on a mini street car oh I'm sure, that car goes on so many overlanding journeys, you couldn't even joke about the necessity for extra storage space. 🙄
Clean shop and happy employees. 👍
the best part.. doesn't talk in 3rd person about himself
Car Ninja: The only decent man whom profits from the poor decisions of others.😇
Well done Jonny and team ! Great job fellas !
It's a good thing I didn't know you back when I had my 2002 745li. I abandoned the car when a $1500 coolant pipe broke. I had already poured too much money in to that thing to make it worth fixing again. LOL
Car Ninja is a true professional 👍.
After watching this excellent video, it just proves the point of, when you find a good BMW mechanic, you keep them
Everyone should be so lucky to have the “Car Ninja” in their area. Would definitely make *my* cars’ lives better.
I think the M54 Inline-Six is one of the most durable engines that BMW made. I have it in my 05 E46 330i and never an issue besides the usual hoses for coolant and power steering. The disa went once and a valve cover gasket. Good silky smooth engine. 👌
Its always a good feeling when a plan works out. Great job
As a BMW mechanic you cannot hate any BMWs, there are just favorite and least favorite ones.
I've watched a few of these now and i can say that the works of art here are not the cars
it's the technicians.
I'd happily work for johhny the way he talks to his worker is really good is a proper leader and a brilliant mechanic 👌
Hoovie be paying his bills AND advertising shops. What a man.
Like the part about "lawn mower " spark plugs. Good to know...thanks
Definitely look forward to the videos, need to get a series going with maybe a personal build or something.
In the 70’s BMW made such a great handling car with fantastic quality. All down hill since then. I have no idea why people still buy them.
E46s are little bit shitty but i still like how it looks and probably will keep mine some time :)
nice that there are options other than star diagnosis.. back in the day that was the only option
The engineer who designed this car didn’t get fired…in fact he got promoted for designing a car with built in failure which in turn brings BMW great money through parts and labor!
