    Worked for years in US Navy repair facility for the Sperry Mk19 and Mk27 gyrocompasses. Spot on explanations. Some folks think you just 'point it north and it stays pointed that way'. But you do an excellent job explaining how they really work and use the earth's rotation along with local 'level' to find geographic north.

      In your work with navigational gyroscopes did you run long duration testing of those you were repairing? Did you ever observe drift or tilt caused by rotation of the earth?

    • @mikefochtman7164
      @mikefochtman7164 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nathanyamaha465 Gyrocompasses such as what I worked on are designed to process constantly in a manner counter to the earth's rotation. Any 'drift' from pointing north is detected and corrected. As they operate, an internal integrator (several actually) monitor the drift rate and increase the procession to counteract the drift.
      Gyrocompasses are much more than just a simple gyroscope that was started while pointing north.
      Interesting fact about gyrocompasses, if the earth did NOT rotate, they wouldn't work and would never find north.

    I enjoyed watching all the 3 videos on explaining of how a gyroscope functions. It would have been more helpful if some animation of the spinning wheel would been included to visualise the tilt and the drift affect to keep it absolutely horizontal. Perhaps we can look forward to a 4th video with all the elements put together. Fascinating subject. Thank you.

    Sir, You have mentioned that it takes 4 hours to attain the required rpm for the gyroscope of a gyro compass. But I think that the said 4 hours time has to be given to it to seek and to settle to the celestial north -south axis ( not magnetic axis) which it attains by precession caused by earths rotation. Because assuming it, for simplicity to be on equator, if it is aligned with earths axis then there will not be any tilt due to earths rotation in 4 hours. But if it is not aligned with earths axis then as the earth rotates and it moves with it, it will acquire a tilt and as the balancing weight will remove the tilt a precession will set in and that will force the gyro axis to align it with earths axis.

    5:27 Globe claims we have 15 degrees drift (stuff moving apart) as earth turns underneath stuff not attached! That DOES NOT HAPPEN! Nothing is drifting away at 1000mph on the equator. Earth isn’t spinning! Flights would be shorter traveling west.

    Again. Some things are true but not all of them. basically The earth does not rotate and is not a sphere. please don't disagree. try to understand the gyroscope and you will understand. it is very difficult if you have been taught "the way it works" and now I show up and tell you otherwise (or that's not the way) . and I don't want to fight about right or wrong. but to understand the gyroscope. because the very few good videos have been removed.
